Dear Parishioners Today we celebrate Pentecost, the birthday of the church. This event changed the frightened apostles into courageous missionaries ready to go out and spread the Gospel of love. You and I have received this same Spirit at our Baptism and that wonderful gift of the Holy Spirit was confirmed at our Confirmation. On June 24 th and 25 th , 120 children from our parishes will be confirmed in the gift of the Holy Spirit which they first received at their Baptism. Down through the years the Sacrament of Confirmation has been explained in a number of ways. The Church today endeavours to focus on Confirmation as confirming what happened at Baptism. To highlight this connection children are encouraged to keep their Baptism name for Confirmation and even where possible to have the Godparents as the Sponsors at Confirmation. The Oil of Chrism is used at Baptism and also at Confirmation. One cannot talk about Confirmation without talking about Baptism. In our liturgy today let us pray for our children who will soon be confirmed in the Holy Spirit and become full members of our Parish Community. In The Joy of the Gospel Pope Francis writes that every Christian is a missionary disciple and our role is to evangelize. What do I see as my mission? Bishop Thomas Gumbleton preached recently: “We need to pray deeply, asking God to send forth the Holy Spirit ... because all of us need to recommit ourselves to go back out into our world to give witness to Jesus - to the love of Jesus that is a love without limit, without hesitation, a love that’s filled with courage. And if we witness to this, gradually our world will be transformed until the reign of God is present, and we bring peace and joy and goodness wherever we go as followers of Jesus.” The 36 hour Pentecost vigil hosted by the Latin American Chaplaincy continues until 7 am on Sunday 8th June at Our Lady of Fatima Church. Pentecost Sunday Year A 8th June 2014

Next Sunday: Trinity Sunday: Exodus 34:4-6.8-9; 2 Corinthians 13:11-13; John 3: 16-18

Reflections on the Readings for Pentecost Sunday Year A

Introduction

Today the promise of the risen Christ to be with his disciples until the end of time is fulfilled with the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles. The Holy Spirit comes in a most powerful way and changes the disciples and early church community in a profound way.

First Reading: Acts 2:1-11

The Holy Spirit comes upon the Apostles as a powerful wind and tongues of fire. The Holy Spirit fills them individually and communally. The Spirit impels to preach the Gospel to all peoples.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:3-7, 12-13

The gift of the Holy Spirit is not just something personal. The gifts of the Spirit are for a good purpose and are given to build up the Christian community.

Gospel: John 20:19-23

This Gospel of John presents to us the experience of the early church that the gift of the risen Jesus is peace. A peace we know that the world cannot always give.

The Annual Global Rosary for Priests

The Rosary will be prayed in 60 shrines in 60 countries

in 24 hours.

Each of the participating shrines prays a particular mystery of the rosary at a set time, in thanksgiving to God for our priests and to implore the protection and loving care of Our Lady. By midnight that day, the entire world will have been encircled in prayer.

The Australian Shrine is here at Our Lady of Lourdes

At 9:30 am on June 27 the Sorrowful Mysteries

will be recited in Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

We will pray for all priests:

** that they will be blessed, through our prayers, with God’s grace for their priesthood;

** that in this worldwide prayer for them, they may experience our gratitude and support;

** and finally, that they will persevere in unity with Christ and his Church, and shepherd the Lord’s flock to the safe pastures of His Kingdom.
