Fish On!

Gather your friends, family and fi shing poles and head for the

Pocono waterways! The 2013 Pennsylvania Trout Fishing Season

offi cially begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 13!

The Pocono Mountains Region of Pennsylvania is known for

excellent coldwater trout fi shing. Healthy populations of rainbow, brook

and brown trout fl ourish in local waters, and abundant public fi shing

holes are easily accessed by car or scenic hike.

Through Labor Day weekend, anglers can catch and keep up to

fi ve fi sh per creel from Pennsylvania’s inland waters; trout must measure

at least seven inches in length to be kept. In the Commonwealth,

anglers age 16 and older are required to possess a fi shing license and

trout stamp. One, three, and seven-day fi shing licenses are available for

Pennsylvania visitors.

Fishing licenses, bait and equipment can be found at many locally-

owned shops across the Poconos. Woehrle’s Bait Shop in Mount

Pocono offers an outstanding selection of live fi shing bait; Hunter’s

Gallery features rods, reels, creels and lures; Tannery Depot showcases

great bait and tackle, and Blakeslee Sport Shop sells locally-tied fl ies,

fi shing licenses, live bait and topographical maps.

See the SPORTS section on page 21 of this issue for more

information on sports outfi tters in the Poconos, and be sure to buy your

license!

Trout fi shing rules and regulations are available through the

Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission at www.fi sh.state.pa.us.

Behold Boulder

Field!Boulder Field, located in Hickory Run

State Park, is a National Natural Landmark

and a true scenic wonder. The vast “fi eld” of

stone is a fossil and a relict, its contents left

behind after the last ice advance.

Hickory Run’s Boulder Field is a

potpourri of loosely-packed boulders which

range in size from a few inches to 25’ in length. The surprisingly fl at fi eld measures 400’ wide, 1,800’ long and about

10’ deep. The boulders are predominantly red sandstone, and trend from angular shapes in the east side of the fi eld

to more rounded shapes in the west.

About 15,000 years ago, such rocky terrain was common throughout the Northeast, but gradual weathering

and climate change have led to the coverage or elimination of many boulder fi elds. Only in special places, such as

Hickory Run State Park, do these astounding formations remain.

Hickory Run State Park is located in Carbon County at the foothills of the Pocono Mountains. Boulder Field is

easily accessible via Boulder Field Road or the scenic Boulder Field hiking trail.

To learn more about this unique natural wonder, call the Hickory Run State Park Offi ce at (570) 443-0400 or
