CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

M: Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

C: Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin.

For faithless worrying and selfish pride,For sins of habit and sins of choice,For the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do,

You should cast me away from your presence forever. O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.

M: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great

mercy, God made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ through his called servant: I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

PRAYER AND PRAISE LORD, HAVE MERCY Mark 10:47

Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression “Lord, have mercy” is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian church.

M: In peace, let us pray to the Lord.

For the well-being of all people everywhere, that they may receive from you all they need to sustain body and life, hear our prayer, O Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy. M: For the spread of your life-giving gospel throughout the world, that

all who are lost in sin may be brought to faith in you, hear our prayer, O Christ.

C:  Christ, have mercy.

M: For patience and perseverance in this life, that we may not lose the hope of heaven as we await your return, hear our prayer, O Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

M: Lord of life, live in us that we may live for you.C: Amen.

FIRST READING Jeremiah 15:15-21

15LORD, you understand. Remember me and care for me. Take vengeance for me on those who persecute me. You are slow to anger. Do not take me away. Be mindful that I bear reproach for your sake. 16I devoured your words when they were found. Your words became a joy for me, and a delight for my heart, because I bear your name, LORD God of Armies. 17I did not sit in the company of partiers, nor did I celebrate. I sat alone because your hand was upon me. You filled me with indignation. 18Why is my pain unending and my wound incurable, refusing to heal? Will you be like a deceptive brook to me, like a spring that dries up? 19Therefore this is what the LORD says: “If you repent, I will take you back, so that you may stand before me. If you say what is valuable, and not what is worthless, you will be my spokesman. Let them turn to you, but you must not turn to them. 20I will make you a bronze wall to this people. They will fight against you, but they will not overcome you, because I am with you to save you and to rescue you, declares the LORD. 21I will rescue you from the hand of the wicked, and I will deliver you from the grasp of the violent.”

SECOND LESSON Romans 12:1-8

Therefore I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice—holy and pleasing to God—which is your appropriate worship. 2Also, do not continue to conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, so that you test and approve what is the will of God—what is good, pleasing, and perfect. 3So by the grace given to me, I tell everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought, but think in a way that results in sound judgment, as God distributed a measure of faith to each of you. 4For we have many members in one body, and not all the members have the same function. 5In the same way, though we are many, we are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. 6We have different gifts, according to the grace God has given us. If the gift is prophecy, do it in complete agreement with the faith. 7If it is serving, then serve. If it is teaching, then teach. 8If it is encouraging, then encourage. If it is contributing, be

generous. If it is leadership, be diligent. If it is showing mercy, do it cheerfully.

21From that time, Jesus began to show his disciples that he had to go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and experts in the law, and be killed, and on the third day be raised again. 22Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “May you receive mercy, Lord! This will never happen to you.” 23But Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a snare to me because you are not thinking the things of God, but the things of men.” 24Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to follow me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. 25In fact whoever wants to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26After all, what will it benefit a person if he gains the whole world, but forfeits his soul? Or what can a person give in exchange for his soul?”

NICENE CREED

C: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

THE LORD’S PRAYER

C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

THE SACRAMENT

PREFACEThe words of the Preface mark the beginning of the Sacrament section of the service and lift the

worshipers’ hearts in praise. The opening sentences are among the oldest in the Christian liturgy. M: The Lord be with you.C: And also with you. M: Lift up your hearts.C: We lift them up to the Lord.

M: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.C:  It is good and right so to do. M:  It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places

Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:

DISTRIBUTION

(The Lord’s Supper is a wonderful gift in which we receive Jesus’ own body and blood to forgive our sins and to strengthen us in our faith (Matthew 26:26-28). It is, however, a gift that is given us with certain responsibilities. The sacrament is intended for those who have been instructed and who understand what they are doing (1 Corinthians 11:27-29). It is also a way for us to express our unity of faith (1 Corinthians 10:16-17). Therefore, we ask that only confirmed members of Shining Mountains or other churches of the Wisconsin or Evangelical Lutheran Synod(s) (WELS/ELS) come forward to receive Communion. If you would like to become a communicant member of Shining Mountains, or have any questions about this practice, please speak with the pastor after the service.)

To keep social distancing, we ask that families approach one at a time. Grab your cup with the wafer in it from the table by the baptismal font and then walk to the station on the side you are sitting to grab your individual cup. Pastor will speak the words from 6+ feet away. Eat and drink the elements and then proceed back to your seat by going out into the entryway and coming back up the center aisle. After everyone has received the elements Pastor will pronounce a blessing for everyone.

M: Hear the prayer of your people, O Lord, that the lips which have praised you here may glorify you in the world, that the eyes which have seen the coming of your Son may long for his coming again, and that all who have received in his true body and blood the pledge of your forgiveness may be restored to live a new and holy life, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

BLESSING

M: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace.

C: Amen.

Adult Bible ClassWe are starting a series entitled Answering Objections to Christianity. Have you ever wondered how a loving God could allow such suffering or send someone to hell? Has someone ever asked you why they should follow Jesus since Christians are so hypocritical? And hasn’t science disproved religion? We will be looking at all these questions and more over the next few months. Weather permitting we will be meeting outside under the tent for the next few weeks. We’d love to have you join us, each Sunday from 9:40 – 10:15 AM.

Pumpkin Fest – October 10thThe Evangelism committee has been looking ahead to our fall outreach opportunities. Last year we had a great turnout at our 1st Pumpkin Fest (even though the weather was less than ideal.) This year we are planning on having it all outside. One new thing we are going to try is a mini trunk-or-treat. Individuals /families would decorate the back of a vehicle with a theme (possibly have a game or activity to go along with it) and sit in the parking lot giving the kids a chance to come around and get a prize / candy. So we are in need of people who would be willing to do that.

There will also be other activities, both outside and weather permitting under the tent. If you could mark October 10th on your calendar as a day to help here at church, we would greatly appreciate it. Check the sign-up sheet in the entryway or speak with James McGough or Pastor.
