40 Days for LifeThe Fall 40 Days for Life campaign will once again be held at Founder’s Women’s Center (1243E Broad Street). This continues to be one of Columbus’ busiest abortion clinics, where patients are frequently seen Monday-Thursday in the mornings and early afternoons. The clinic offers the abortion pill after surrendering its surgical license following a brief

closure and reopening in the Summer/Fall of 2018.

The first day of the campaign was Wed, Sept. 25th, and will run daily from 7am-7pm through Sun, Nov. 3rd.

Our parish vigil day is Sunday, Oct. 20th. Please prayerfully consider praying for one hour outside the clinic anytime between 7am and 7pm. A sign-up sheet is located in the Gathering Space. If you cannot pray on our adopted day, you are welcome to volunteer for another time during the 40 days at www.gcrtl.org/40-days-for-life or by calling 614-445-8508.

Please contact Stacey Belford at 614-554-0161 or [email protected] for more information.

“Why we love the School at OLPH”- Eric Brooks

My wife and I are often asked why we choose to send our twins to a parochial school usually with, “you can get a good education anywhere” inserted somewhere in the conversation. I suppose there is some truth to that statement and a private education is a significant financial investment. However, attending a school is much more than the education itself and there are four significant facets of OLPH school that

I greatly value.

The first is their educational model where the parents are the primary educators of the children and the school is there to help. Every staff member and teacher at OLPH’s school have actively and directly worked with us as parents to further the education and socialization of our children. I know if I email someone at the school, the response will often be instantaneous and no longer than a few hours or the next business day. Specialists, staff, and teachers are not only willing, but very enthusiastic to meet with us. I’ve gotten emailed responses late at night, stupidly early in the morning, and in response to something one of the twins had done, “I'm in the middle of cooking but had

to write back as you have no idea how happy this makes me!!”

Next, I never worry the school will contradict anything we are teaching the twins at home regarding our shared Catholic faith and values. In fact, they are actively reinforcing and expanding on what we are doing at home. The big “C” Catholic church is composed of countless smaller churches. I find it extremely reassuring that our small family church is being supported and elevated by the larger school church and then the still larger parish church. I cannot imagine a scenario where one of the twins would come home, tell me something they learned at school, and then I would need to say, “Okay, they may have said that, but we don’t believe the same thing, here’s what we do believe…”

Speaking of that shared Catholic faith, a third aspect of the school I value is the twins will never be ostracized for that faith. Many philosophers and theologians are speaking of our current period as a “post-Christian.” One where you are allowed to have your faith behind closed doors, but you must keep it out of the public square. Not only does our parochial school allow our children to be Catholic, it embraces their faith and encourages it at every opportunity. There is morning and closing prayer, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, and an entire educational process viewed through a Christian lens. The twins’ faith can grow and nourish both at home and at school, each environment complimenting the other. They can take pride in their Catholicism from the moment they are forcefully prodded out of bed in the morning

until they are herded like a pair of cats into bed at night.

Finally, I have great confidence the twins will be surrounded by faculty, staff, and, most importantly, peers, who share their morals and values. Colin Powell reflects, “A mirror reflects a man’s face, but what he is really like is shown by the kinds of friends he chooses” and more directly comedian David Chappelle muses, “You got to be careful of the company you keep.” I know our children will be surrounded by supportive

friends and quality company at the OLPH school. It also helps that the academics are outstanding.

My name is Eric Brooks, and I greatly appreciate any feedback you may have. All comments and feedback can be sent to [email protected]

REBORNYOU, YOUR CHILD AND THE HEART OF BAPTISM

~Rocky Black

Across the Christian denominations, there are a host of different terms and understandings for baptism, including teachings about infant baptism, adult baptism, immersion, infant baptism, believer baptism. Entire denominations and church branches have sprung up or split

over a specific theology of baptism.

For Catholics, baptism is practiced for infants, and for adults who come to faith through a period of instruction (normally RCIA). So what’s the big deal? Why is the Catholic understanding so important to living the full

Christian life?

In a six (6) part video series on FORMED, REBORN explores the practice and purpose of baptism in the Catholic church. Parents and godparents will find the videos very practical, laying out what’s behind the rite,

as well as the practical steps needed to fulfill your role.

It also includes a study guide for individuals and churches, in a format conducive to home study or to a church presentation. It does so with a cinematic beauty of churches, baptismal rites etc. characteristic of Augustine

Institute productions.

Episodes include:A New Creation: The Mystery of BaptismEntering the Mystery: The Rite Explained

Nurturing the Life of Grace: Called to MissionThe Mission to Love: 7 Keys to Catholic Parenting

The Gift of Godparents: More Than Cards and PresentsEvangelization Through Baptism: A Catechist Training for REBORN

Episode 1, A New Creation, is beautiful to watch with the storytellers reminding us that water, baptism and redemption have been constant themes throughout Scripture. In Genesis we read that the Holy Spirit encased or hovered over the water before human time began. Moses led God’s people out of slavery to new life across the Red Sea. God judged the earth and flooded it with water giving new birth to the race through

Noah. Baptism is the beginning of new life in the Holy Spirit.

In Episode 2 we walk through the Baptismal rite or ritual that we are used to seeing in the Mass. Why do we do what we do; why does the Priest say and pray this; why does he engage parents, godparents and the congregation? Not only is this practice biblical, it ties together the rich history of baptism throughout the Old and New Testaments. You will understand better why we throw off Satan and pagan practices, embrace new

life in Christ, and create a lifelong family of believers to walk side by side with the newly baptized.

Episode 4 is very practical for parents. How do we help our child, and ourselves, live out the vows of our baptism? We learn how to create a biblical role model for loving Jesus Christ, and living that life in the service of Him through our Church. Godparents take heart! Episode 5 will give you every step and rationale for your role. Starting with the role’s description in the catechism, you will learn exactly what is expected of you and

how you can fulfill your lifelong important role.

Today and in the history of His people, God uses the divine sacrament of water to create new life, and save us from our sins. If you want to understand this history better, take a look a the REBORN videos on FORMED.
