Our community is beer and stronger because of inclusion. I am extremely grateful for the work of the team and for everyone who parcipated in one form or another: whether you joined the book study earlier this summer, aended a story circle, came to an open forum, parcipated in a video or spoke during the meeng on Sunday. We heard you and we appreciate your voice! The most poignant comment was from a church member who said "I see myself in here". For me, that meant we did what we set out to do; to show how our differences do not keep us apart but bring us together. Gratefully, Laurie Dahms Board Moderator

THIS WEEK AT FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH For the week of OCTOBER 2, 2019

As fall begins, I share excerpts of a prayer by Joyce

Rupp.

God of the seasons, there is a time for everything;

there is a time for dying and a time for rising. We

need courage to enter into the transformation process.

God of autumn, the trees are saying goodbye to their

green, letting go of what has been. We, too, have our

moments of surrender, with all their insecurity and

risk. Help us to let go when we need to do so.

God of fallen leaves lying in colored patterns on the

ground, our lives have their own patterns. As we see

the patterns of our own growth, may we learn from

them.

God of harvest wagons and fields of ripened grain,

many gifts of growth lie within the season of our

surrender. We must wait for harvest in faith and

hope. Grant us patience when we do not see the

blessings.

God of geese going south for another season, your

wisdom enables us to know what needs to be left

behind and what needs to be carried into the future.

We yearn for insight and vision.

God of life, you believe in us, you enrich us, you

entrust us with the freedom to choose life. For all

this, we are grateful.

I really hope to see you Sunday, Jill

A Note From Your Pastor

Do You Have a Coat to Share?

It is time to get ready for the Winter Clothing Distribution that is sponsored by CRC (Consultation of Religious Communities). This event will take place on Saturday, October 26 at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church with set up happening Thursday, October 24 and Friday, October 25. How can you help?

Bring clean coats, hats, scarves, gloves/mittens to FCC to donate. Note: These are the only items we are collecting this year. The collection box will be near the front doors October 6 thru 20.

Stay after worship on October 20 to help sort and box the items we collect.

Sign up to volunteer at the event on October 24, 25 or 26. See Nancy Richards to sign up.

A Word from Our Moderator

On Sunday, our congregation voted overwhelmingly to approve a Welcome Statement. While we have been living as a "welcoming community" for many years, this statement will be used to share with others about how we worship and live out our faith as an inclusive community. While there are still some differences of opinion as to the selection of a few words, or perhaps you felt it was still "too long", we came together through a collaborative process to write a statement about welcoming all; not only at the table, but also in leadership positions, on committees, and in worship. Our community is better and stronger because of inclusion.

I am extremely grateful for the work of the team and for everyone who participated in one form or another: whether you joined the book study earlier this summer, attended a story circle, came to an open forum, participated in a video or spoke during the meeting on Sunday. We heard you and we appreciate your voice! The most poignant comment was from a church member who said "I see myself in here". For me, that meant we did what we set out to do; to show how our differences do not keep us apart but bring us together.

Gratefully,

Laurie Dahms

Scripture: Isaiah 25: 6-10, 55:1-5 Sermon: The Expansive Table

This Week at First Christian Church October 2, 2019

WHAT: Connecting Iowans to Sudan

WHERE: St. Patrick’s Church of Iowa City (4330 St Patricks Dr, Iowa City, IA 52240)

WHEN: Sunday, October 6 at 6 p.m.

On Sunday, October 6th, the Center for Worker Justice will be holding an event to connect Iowans with their

Sudanese neighbors. Iowa City’s growing Sudanese population has a rich culture to share with the community.

This event will include music, food, and a featured speaker, Dr. Mohamed Naji al-Assam. Dr. Al-Assam is a

physician and a leader of the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA). He played a pivotal role as the

spokesperson for the SPA, which spearheaded the non-violent revolution against the corrupt regime in Sudan. In

the aftermath of this political turmoil, Dr. Al-Assam is visiting Iowa to connect with both the Sudanese population

and all Iowans.

CWJ hopes this event will help integrate Iowa City’s Sudanese population into the rest of the community by

sparking cultural exchange and conversation. It is an excellent opportunity for Iowans to learn more about

recent events in Sudan from an important Sudanese figure.

WHITE PRIVILEGE 101: GETTING IN ON THE CONVERSATION

Film Screening at Congregational UCC

Tonight, October 2 at 7pm, you are invited to join the Congregational UCC, Diane Finnerty (leader in diversity

awareness at the University of Iowa), and others from across the community for a film by Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr.

which examines and explores white privilege/oppression and the imperative that those promoting diversity

must “get in on the conversations.” Following the film, Diane Finnerty will lead a discussion about issues the

films raises.

The Habitat for Humanity Interfaith Build continues. They are looking forward to

scheduling the dedication and moving the families into their homes. But that takes you!

If you can volunteer to work at the site on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday, click here to

sign up.

Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

Romans 15:7

At First Christian Church of Iowa City/Coralville, we aspire to share God’s expansive and unconditional love with all,

with respect and positive regard for our human differences. Whatever your lived experience, skin color, native tongue or dialect, ethnicity or nationality, gender identity, sexual

orientation, relationship or family status, age, size, physical or mental health, economic situation, addiction, ability or disability, education level, profession, faith history, and politics … there is room for you at the table. It is God’s

welcome and is without limitations.

By God’s grace and following Jesus’ example, we invite you to join us in community and communion. We embrace you as a fellow child of God, equally and deeply loved and

with full access to the kin-dom that we strive to inhabit. If you are among us, you are one of us.
