Counselor-Parent Chat Positive Discipline
Tuesday, February 24, 2014 8:45-9:45am
MPR (in the new building) All parents welcome!
All parents get frustrated and tired. We will give you some strategies to raise responsible and respectful children while having fun. In this session we will discuss various parenting styles, the difference be-tween discipline and punishment, how to carry out positive discipline methods, and how to avoid power struggles with your children. We hope to see you there!

Dear Parents,
I hope everyone had a pleasant Carnival holiday. I know many people traveled during this time, while others stuck around Caracas
and took advantage of the time to get some rest and relaxation. Either way, the holiday provides a nice break.
During the holiday, I returned from the States, where Mr. Sicard and I were recruiting teachers. I’m happy to say, at this time all
teaching positions for next year have been filled. Of the three years I’ve been at ECA, this was the best year for recruiting teach-
ers. I think this might reflect the fact that Venezuela has not been in the U.S. news this year as much as it was last year and the
year before. Negative press about a place can scare teachers away from even considering a place. However, without the negative
press, we were finding more people willing to talk with us and consider the possibility of Venezuela. While we shared with them
the challenges of living here, we also talked about the school. In most cases, once we had the opportunity to talk with people, they
became open to interviewing. The end result was that in most cases we ended up being able to hire our first choice of candidates.
I believe we’ve ended up with a good slate of new teachers and should have a fantastic year next year.
Regards,
Dr. Gregory Hedger
Superintendent

Middle School News
From The Middle School Principal
Dear Parents,
We have a busy few weeks ahead of us with the Brazil trip, report cards, parent-teacher conferences, the VANAS tournament, Ca-
reer day, the Beach Bash and many more activities. ECA Middle School is always a busy place of learning and fun for your child.
Please take the time in the next few weeks to thank our teaching staff for all their efforts in providing a great educational experi-
ence for our children.
Week without Walls Each May, the Middle School spends a week engaging in experiential learning programs. The goal of this experiential learning is
to provide authentic, outside-the-classroom learning opportunities that are not possible in the daily classroom. Due to increased
prices, limited availability, and frequent flight scheduling changes, this year our international trips will be replaced with in-school
and/or in-country programs for Grade 6 and 7 students. Students and parents will be offered experiential learning programs that
have been designed by Middle School staff. The programs available to parents and students during this week will be formatted in
one of three ways: in- school only, in- school with day field trips, or overnight programs. This new format allows for greater
choice based on personal interest and budget. We look forward to sharing more information with you in the weeks ahead.
Spirit Week: March 2-6 There are a number of events scheduled for the first week of March to allow our students to show their national and school spirit.
Tuesday, March 3rd will see our students compete in our annual Venezuela Quiz Bowl. This is followed by our school wide Vene-
zuelan National Day on Wednesday, March 4 on which students may dress in national colors (a combination of yellow, blue, red)
or they can wear a Vinotinto T-Shirt (The National Soccer team). During this day, the cafeteria will be offering a Venezuelan
menu. Finally, on Thursday, March 5 ECA will begin hosting the Middle School VANAS tournament. Come cheer on the girl’s
football team and the boys’ basketball team. Students are welcome to show their school spirit by dressing in school colors.
Parent Chat - March 3rd On Tuesday, March 3rd, (2:30-3:30) we will host our next Parent Chat. Parent Chats are designed to provide you with more infor-
mation about programs or learning opportunities within the Middle School. The focus of our March chat will be for parents of 8th
grade students to learn more about High School expectations and course selection. The parent chat will take place in the New
Building MPR.
Middle School Career Day: Friday, March 13, 2015 Students will learn about eight careers and start thinking about their future goals. There will be speakers from many different ca-
reer fields here to speak to the students about the importance of education, goal setting, and their experiences within their ca-
reer. It's important that children start exploring careers at a young age and to understand what it takes to meet their goals.
Beach Bash The Middle School PTA Boosters will be hosting the Middle School Beach Bash on March 13th following Career Day. Please
contact Holly Bence or a PTA member if you are able to help with decorations or food preparations on this day.
Grade 8 Washington Trip Please remember that if your child is participating in the Grade 8 Washington trip, you need to submit a copy of your child’s pass-
port information page, and USA travel visa (if needed) to the MS office as soon as possible.
Please note that minors traveling on school trips, who are not accompanied by their parents or legal guardians, are required by law
to have an authorized travel permit. This document must be drafted by a lawyer and notarized or processed by the municipality
where you live (Baruta, El Hatillo, Chacao, etc.) Many companies will process this permit with their own lawyers.
If need assistance or have any questions about this process, please feel free to contact the MS office.
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
Cameron Janzen
Middle School Principal

“Two strong arms, weathered hands, witness of
many cruelties and pains. They are coarse, stained.
These strong hands are called HOPE. Despite all of
the things that happen to us we are able to keep
holding on. We raise this hope above our heads; it’s
what allows us to keep on living. Not oblivious to
pain, but rather in passive reflection. This Hope, it
is not a fathomable “thing” that can be actually held
at arms’ length, but it is more than that, and to-
night’s show, the Hope Gala, is testimony to that.”

Looking for help!
Please e-mail Stacia Taves ([email protected]), Counselor
Grades 5-8, if you are willing to do a short presentation about a
Career at the Middle School Career Day! Students will learn
about numerous careers and start thinking about their future
goals. If you are interested in helping out for Career Day in any
way, please mark your calendar as we’ll need many speakers from
9:00am-1:30pm. Each presentation is only about 20 minutes. We
need the community’s help to make this day successful!

There are just two weeks of school left before Carnival Holidays and
a little bit more than two months before the International Fair that is
PTA major and only fund raising event. So far we have the following
countries signed up: Colombia – Argentina – Indonesia - Peru – Russia – India – Spain -
Lebanon
The event will be on the second week of April, after the Spring Break
and it will probably take place during the week, with country boots
divided in in 2/3 days depending on the number of partici-
pants. Please come forward and help us organizing this wonderful
event by coordinating your country boots. You can sign up by send-
ing an email to the PTA at [email protected] or by contacting one of
our members.
Thank you in advanced and we are looking forward to work with you.
Every year we request voluntary donations from families and com-
panies with children at ECA for the traditional final raffle. All dona-
tions, large or small are welcome.
If there is a specific person or department in your company that deals
with this type of request, please redirect it and send us an e-mail with
the appropriate name/department for follow up. In the past some
companies have used the following suggestions as possible options,
one of which may be most suitable for your company:
1. Gift baskets of products if appropriate for a raffle
2. Electronic gifts
3. Art pieces
4. Airline tickets
5. Complimentary hotel packages or restaurant vouchers
6. Monetary contributions. The PTA will use the funds to buy suitable
raffle prizes
Please let us know if you would like to contribute with this year’s
event and send donations to Escuela Campo Alegre, Main Office c/o
International Fair Committee. Monetary contributions should be in
the name of: AC Escuela Campo Alegre; preferably, before March
20, 2015.
Your support is vital to this event and is greatly appreciated. Please
feel free to call or e-mail for additional information or questions con-
cerning the Fair.
Thank you!
