A . s part of PCPC’s process of electing elders and deacons, we want our church body to help us learn of men who are growing in their character, giftedness, and in their sense of call to serve our body. The congregation is encouraged each year to recommend men whom they believe to be qualified. The session has approved March 17–May 17 as the officer recommendation period for elder and deacon candidates for the Class of 2018. A screening committee led this year by Ruling Elder Randy Wood and composed of elders, deacons, and laity will interview all men who are recommended and consider their qualifications before submitting a list of potential officer candidates to the session for approval. The men approved by the session will undergo a year of training in classes on the Bible, the Westminster Confession of Faith, the Book of Church Order, and officer specific books, and then stand for election by the congregation in June, 2014. As you prayerfully consider your recommendations, please reflect on 1 Timothy 3:1–13, Titus 1:5–9, and 1 Peter 5:1–4 as the biblical basis for qualifications. Men who are chosen must meet the qualifications as summarized in the Book of Church Order: Qualifications of an Elder (BCO 8-2, 3): He that fills this office should possess a competency of human learning and be blameless in life, sound in the faith and apt to teach. He should exhibit a sobriety and holiness of life becoming the Gospel. He should rule his own house well and should have a good report of them that are outside the church. (The elder is) to watch diligently over the flock, that no corruption of doctrine or of morals enter therein. Qualifications of a Deacon (BCO 9-2, 3): It is the duty of deacons to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress. To the office of deacon, which is spiritual in nature, shall be chosen men of spiritual character, honest repute, exemplary lives, brotherly spirit, warm sympathies, and sound judgment. Please consider the following as you make recommendations: You must be a member in good standing of PCPC in order to recommend an individual for an officer position. Do not recommend a man for office unless you have first obtained his permission to do so. Officers who have previously served as deacons and elders are eligible to serve again and may be recommended. At the time of recommendation, an officer candidate must have been a member in good standing of PCPC for the past two years. Please do not recommend a man who is related to you by blood or marriage. Recommendation forms are available online or in the literature racks throughout the church.
