were filled with new beginnings for many CORE students. We celebrated students who began a journey with Jesus by accepting Him into their hearts for the first time, students starting a new life as part of the Christian community through baptism, and students entering adulthood through high school graduation.

April 23, the student leaders grilled hotdogs in the parking lot before the evening’s “main event.”

Three CORE students were baptized by immersion in the midst of their CORE Student Ministries fellowship. It was a wet and wonderful event that included Pastor Kent and Rev. Todd Guinn. As each student was dunked, the group gathered around to lay hands on and pray for the new member of our Christian family. A truly memorable evening!

April 30 was “Servant Leader Takeover” night, as Matt Brown, the Youth Pastor was away at a conference. Disability Awareness Sunday

Eight women from First Church were part of the 180 United Methodist Women from the new Great Plains Conference that traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, April 25-27 to attend the National UMW Assembly. At this quadrennial event, women from around the world gathered to learn more about the scope of the work of UMW in the general church, local communities and on global initiatives that benefit women, children and youth. Attendees had the opportunity to engage in meaningful worship, listen to nationally recognized speakers, attend workshops and participate in local mission and justice activities. The event theme was “Make It Happen” with a scriptural focus on the feeding of the five thousand that challenged attendees to think beyond limited resources and do more in terms of mission, justice and practicing hospitality in the community. Attending from First Church were Betty Hodson, Wendy Ramsey, Saundra Rogers, Sandy Walling, Nancy McKellar, Bonnie Laycock, Judith Oswald and Carolyn Vosburg. The group found the workshops very informational, the speakers were inspiring and the worship uplifting. The group came away with a renewed admiration for the work of the UMW around the world.

• Use People First Language. For example, say “person with a disability” instead of “disabled person.” Avoid words like “retarded” or “cripple”.• Be patient; give ample time for the person to process information and respond to a question (15-20 second). Do not complete the person’s sentence for him or her. • Keep sentences short and uncomplicated; avoid complex words or jargon. • Ask open-ended questions; avoid questions that require a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response.• Ask the person to repeat information back to you to check for understanding. • Avoid questions about time, complex sequences, or reasons for behavior.• Be age appropriate; treat adults as adults by speaking in a regular tone of voice. • Tell the person if you do not understand what he or she is saying; don’t pretend to understand. • Be prepared to repeat what you say; learning takes place through repetition.

Congratulations to Park Elementary Retirees

Park Ministry Team is proud to recognize three outstanding Park staff who retired at the end of this school year. Members of the Task Force were pleased to be included in the retirement celebration for these dedicated individuals who have faithfully educated and cared for our neighborhood children at Park.

Those retiring are Dan Graber, inter-related instructor, Susan Ludwick, school nurse, and Charlotte Buckmaster, ESOL instructor. We wish them God’s blessings for fun and relaxing adventures in the days ahead.

As part of the Stephen Ministry Team for the past four years it has been an honor, a pleasure and a blessing to be a part of supporting and training of a Christian caring ministry. In recent months another ministry has developed that while it has a similar volunteer base and goals there are differences that set Guardian Angels apart from Stephen Ministers.

Guardian Angels is a grassroots effort to develop relationships within the congregation between those who are elderly and homebound. It is a ministry for those who have a desire to develop long term relationships, or wish to enhance relationships that have existed for years. Volunteers agree to contact their ‘angels’ every week in person or by phone. This program is a great way for our homebound to stay connected with the church family through personal visits, phone calls, and cards. The commitment is substantial and rewarding for all those involved.

I can personally attest to how these visits can be life changing. Wisdom and laughter is shared. Sometimes prayers for soldiers, grandchildren and the growth of the church and its staff are voiced. Hands held, fears expressed, and a lifeline to the congregation and thus God’s love is established, and nurtured. So the question arises, how is Guardians Angels different from Stephen Ministry. Both foster Christian relationships, involve weekly contact with someone in support of the church caring for others.

The differences arise first in those who are cared for. While Guardian Angels is exclusively for those who are homebound by their ability to drive or care for themselves, Stephen Ministry serves any adult who is going through a hard time in life. We have served those grieving the loss of a spouse through death or divorce, those facing a new diagnosis, retirement, those caring for a spouse with a terminal diagnosis. In reality a person could have both a Stephen Minister and a Guardian Angel relationship.

Stephen Ministry volunteers make an additional commitment beyond weekly visits. They complete 50 hours of training, which covers topics such as confidentially, listening skills, referring to psychological professionals and setting boundaries. Bimonthly peer supervision group meetings add to the structure. Volunteers set process oriented goals to guide their ministry, and the group evaluates the goals, makes suggestions and affirms the ministry.

No matter how the relationship is formed, or supervised, or ends, these ministries are ways that our congregation strengthens itself: Following the words of Christ in John 13:34 to “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

To participate in either of these ministries either as a caregiver or care-receiver, contact the church’s Congregational Care Office.

Hello! I wanted to introduce myself as I am a new staff member here at First Church. I grew up in the area and attended Wichita State University for my undergrad work in Psychology. Now I am at Friends University earning a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. I was placed at First Church for my internship which lasts a year. I will offer services to individuals, couples, and families experiencing mental illness, life changes, transitions, and stressors, and other relational issues among couples and families. Marriage and

Family therapists operate from a systems perspective so although it is sometimes appropriate to only see an individual, we try to involve as many people in the therapeutic process as possible and necessary. My services will be offered primarily on Sundays but additional days throughout the week will be added as the year goes on. I feel so pleased and blessed to have such a supportive staff at First Church and Friends University behind me through this journey. I look forward to the next year of helping those in the congregation and community.

Apple Core will begin an exciting new study on June 4 based upon the book, “Why Your Weirdness is Wonderful, Embrace Your Quirks and Live Your Strengths” by Laurie Wallin, a Christian speaker and life coach. The book is written in short dynamic chapters which are humorous and encouraging. Participants will investigate the possibility that they are exactly the way God created them to be, quirks included! They will learn to use their “stumbling blocks” as strengths to share the love of Christ with others. If you are looking for a summer Bible study, Apple Core could be just the answer. This group of women meets on Wednesdays at noon in the church library for about an hour. They support one another in Christian fellowship, prayer, and find joy in learning and sharing life together. If you are interested in joining Apple Core, call or email Libby Eaton at church ([email protected]) so that a book will be ordered for you. All are welcome!

Samantha speaks to the Hand in Hand class about the stove project.

First Church Kids Help with Guatemala Stove Project

The Children’s Lenten Mission Project this spring was the Guatemala Stove Project. All during Lent the children learned about the stove project and about the people of Guatemala. They developed a true passion to raise money to provide stoves for Guatemala. Older elementary students visited several adult Sunday school classes and presented information about why these stoves are so important. They shared what they had learned about

the benefits of the stoves. The families who receive a stove no longer have to cook on an open fire on the floor, but instead have a stove that vents all smoke outside the home, encloses the flame, and gets it up off the floor. These stoves also help preserve the forests since they use significantly less firewood. Families who get a stove have a much healthier living environment as they are not breathing in the diseases causing smoke that would fill

the home previous to the new stove. First Church kids would like to thank

all the people who had compassion on the people of Guatemala and gave to this project. Together they raised $2,003.87. This is enough money to build twenty more stoves in Guatemala. First Church kids will continue to help with this project in the future.

Flowers were planted. Smoke detectors were installed in homes of the elderly. Classroom walls were painted. Lunch was prepared for parents of ill children. All this and more happened May 3 because First Church celebrated Spring Fling 2014. After a delicious breakfast of Chris Cakes pancakes, sausage and juice and a blessing by Pastor Kent and Leslie Coates, approximately 90 persons scattered across Wichita to be of service. First Church helped in free medical clinics, homes and schools for children with special needs, Wichita’s gardens, the Indian Methodist Church, and agencies that reach out to the homeless and low income population.

The Neighborhood Outreach Team wants to say Thank You to all who helped. “Thank you” to each agency that allowed us to come to be a part of their mission. Thanks to old time members and new friends who participated. It was a blessed day.

Homemade Dolls Comfort Sick Children

A big thank you to the Solid Rock Sunday School Class for making 90 more Wesley Dolls! These dolls are used by Wesley Hospital to give to sick children. They are called ‘teaching dolls’ as the doctors and nurses use the dolls to show the children what types of procedures they will be going through and the location of their illness or injury. The children get to keep the dolls. Solid Rock has made a total of 118 dolls for the hospital. What a wonderful contribution! Thank you, Solid Rock! June Mission Lunch to help ESL and Kids’ Club Program

You’ll think you’ve stepped into little Mexico as you enter Meredith Hall on Sunday June 22 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The aroma of enchiladas, rice, beans, chips and HOMEMADE salsa will be tempting your palate as you enter. The meal will be topped off with homemade tres leches cake. After tasting such perfection you will want to purchase take-home enchiladas to cook later. Please plan to come and support the start-up of our First Church ESL and Kids’ Club ministry. All proceeds from the luncheon will go to purchase materials needed for the ESL program such as text books, registration materials, Kids’ Club supplies, and items for the family meal provided each night of ESL.

Thank you to all of our members and friends who provided the Easter lilies that decorated the Sanctuary. They were enjoyed by all as they graced the Sanctuary. The blessing and beauty was not only in the plants themselves, but also in knowing each plant was shared with one of our homebound members, lifting their hearts and spirits with Easter joy.

Senior Saints Ministries, organized our Easter Lily Ministry this year while our Guardian Angels delivered the lilies to our homebound members. On behalf of the church, thank you to those who contributed one or more plants in honor of precious loved ones. Attached is a list of ones who donated lilies and the names of those who are being honored or memorialized:
