Dividing Wall Column Start-up in India
A notable event for GTC occurred recently as the first application of GTC’s GT-DWC (Dividing
Wall Column) in India was started up for Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) at their plant in
Jamnagar.
Previously, an existing column at the plant was a typical side-cut column producing three
products. However, side-cut product specifications were not adequate for a planned new PX4
feed. Reliance was planning to revamp its operations by adding a second column and thereby
converting to a two column system.
GTC proposed to revamp the existing column to GT-DWC which would improve the side-cut
specifications required for the PX feed, as well as drastically reducing the capital expenditures
and energy consumption. The table below illustrates the DWC advantages.
Parameter Units Naphtha Splitter before Revamp
Naphtha Splitter after Revamp with GT-DWC
Side Draw Flow Rate TPH 180.4 140.0
D86 (IBP/FBP) Deg C 106 to 191 110.5 to 175.0
The fast track project was awarded to GTC in November 2014. Tray manufacturing started in
January 2015 and the new DWC was activated in March.

Bird’s Eye View Maria Stovall, AutoCad Drafter – GTC Houston, recently saw things in a different perspective as
she went skydiving for the first time. Maria made a tandem jump with her instructor from
12,000 feet. She said, “I wasn’t scared, but I did have a high level of adrenaline.”
Summer Seasoning
Shogo Iwasaki began his summer internship with GTC’s Licensing Department with very specific goals, especially the opportunity to apply his classroom studies to actual projects. Charlie Chou, Licensing Manager-Asia, served as Shogo’s mentor.
Shogo was given several research projects that were completed successfully, and he presented his work to the team prior to accepting his “Certificate of Achievement” from Joe Gentry, Director-Global Licensing.
Shogo will return to the Colorado School of Mines this fall as a freshman majoring in Chemical Engineering. We wish him many successes in his bright future.
