MISSIONARY: KAREN ALFORD LOCATION: MABARARA, UGANDA
Karen Alford is a Cooperative Baptist Fellowship field personnel who began serving in Mbarara, Uganda in January of 2017 after serving in Indonesia for the last nine years, providing earthquake and tsunami relief, and treating patients while building a long-term community health program.
Karen will be partnering with Medical Teams International (MTI) in Southwest Uganda to help meet the medical needs of incoming refugees. She will be helping with the medical program in the Nakivale and Oruchinga refugee settlements serving an estimated population of 120,840 refugees mainly from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi and Rwanda with some coming from South Sudan, Eritrea and Somalia.
The most vulnerable populations are pregnant women, newborns and children under five years of age, persons living with HIV/AIDS, persons with disabilities and the elderly who need special consideration in order to access critical health services.
Karen will collaborate with MTI staff to promote and contribute to health staff development through training and technical guidance, and by supporting effective monitoring and evaluation systems for key health projects. She will help build local staff and partner capacity by providing or training staff in project cycle management, monitoring and evaluation and health methodologies, and establish collegial, mutually beneficial relationships, and share knowledge and expertise with MTI, partner and donor staff where appropriate. Most importantly, Karen will support development of MTI mission and vision to demonstrate the love of Christ to people affected by disaster, conflict and poverty around the world.
MISSIONARIES: RAWSON AND CHARLIE BRINLEY LOCATION: SOUTH ASIA
Two of our missionaries serving in South Asia are Rawson and Carlie Brinley. They go out to villages to share the gospel. Sometimes their ministry goes well. Most often ministry is a challenge.
On one visit, three people in a village had said they wanted to become Christians. But when the Brinley’s returned to that village, leaders told them the three had changed their minds. The leaders had beaten the three villagers to convince them to forget Christianity. The Brinley’s were told never to come to the village again. But in another village, believers said they had located 10 homes where someone was interested in
the gospel and were open to studying the Bible.
Today, let us pray that the Brinleys stay confident in the Lord and strong in their faith, so that, even when a door closes in their ministry, others will open. Our church supports Rawson and Carlie through our Cooperative Program giving.
MISSIONARIES: LITA AND RICK SAMPLE LOCATION: SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA
In support of CBF Global Missions’ ministry among the most neglected, Lita and Rick minister among internationals in the San Francisco Bay Area, including immigrants, refugees and international students.
The Bay Area is home to immigrants from more than 150 language groups, as well as many refugees. While refugees and immigrants come from all walks of life, many find it difficult to survive economically in one of the most expensive areas of the United States. Many times, a lack of English skills prevents them from securing good jobs and makes interpreting government and school documents burdensome. Many refugees and immigrants also struggle to fit into a new society.
More than 30,000 international students can be found in the Bay Area’s many universities and colleges. They spend most of the ir time in class or studying, and find themselves lonely, bored and in need of friendship. A majority of these students will never be invited into an American home during their stay in the United States. In addition, many Bay Area immigrants, refugees and international students come from countries with limited to no access to the Gospel.
In response to these needs, Lita and Rick minister among Bay Area immigrants, refugees and international students. They minister to immigrants and refugees by helping them fill out government and official paperwork, connecting them with English classes, and assisting them with finding jobs, food, clothing, housing, furniture and household items. They also care for immigrant and refugee children by throwing baby showers, helping set up school lunches and school bus passes, and providing toys and computer equipment.
The Samples show God’s love to area immigrants and refugees by befriending them, having dinner and drinking tea in their homes, connecting them with area churches, and sharing Jesus with them through word and the “Jesus” video. The couple also seeks to mobilize others in re fugee and immigrant ministries.
Rick and Lita minister to international students by spending time with them; offering English as a Second Language, sewing, cooking and craft classes; and organizing outings and opportunities for them to be in American homes. This ministry is important because if they come to know Christ, they can go back to their homelands and share their Christian faith more easily with their family and friends than missionaries coming from a western country. In addition, international students touched favorably by Christians are more likely return to their homelands and influence their governments, societies and cultures to treat Christians favorably.

“On the Road!” was inspired by children’s love of family adventures and the lifelong memories they build.
It recreates the cozy delight of family travels: singing rounds in the car, making up songs, harmonizing (or trying to), playing “I Spy.”
Every lesson is packed with activities that reflect the excitement and energy of family travels: Finding shapes in the clouds to pass the time, discovering constellations in the night sky Roasting banana boats and s’mores, singing songs, and telling ghost stories by the campfire Exploring the woods and shoreline • Doing puzzles, card games, and crafts on a rainy day Experiencing skinned knees and close encounters of the natural kind
And throughout it all, allowing each child to create his/her own private, magical world of imagination & play!
Instructor: Mary Withington
By the time you are reading my letter,
VBS will be over. However, as I am
writing this, we are in the middle of
VBS and having a wonderful week! My
prayer always before VBS is that God
will bring us the children that He wants
to hear the message that we are teaching.
This year, the message is the Plan of
Salvation for Children! We are teaching
the children that God knows every star
in the sky and God knows every single
one of us! We had a record breaking
179 children pre-registered! Since VBS
started, our children’s enrollment has
risen to 228 with 199 children attending
each day! We also have 112 adults/
youth enrolled and working in VBS! We
are picking up 41 children from two
daycares each day. The halls are ringing
with music, laughter, and learning! I
wish that every member in our church
could visit VBS to witness this incredible
week!
We have many different activities going
on throughout the week with the
purpose of those activities being to
guide the children into a growing
relationship with Jesus. Our workers
have worked countless hours to
prepare for this week. From their
classroom decorations to their activities,
they all are outdoing themselves. You
have been faithful prayer warriors. I
can promise you that we have felt
each and every prayer!
Our theme this year is “Galactic
Starveyors: Discovering the God of the
Universe”. As Galactic Starveyors, the
children are searching the skies and
God’s word to uncover God’s truth
etched in His handiwork. They are
discovering that the God who created
everything wants a relationship with
them! From the very beginning, God had
a plan to restore the relationship He knew
we would break. God sent His Son,
Jesus, to be our Savior and His Holy
Spirit to be our Helper. From the very
beginning to the furthest reaches of
space (and beyond), NOTHING is outside
of God’s control or beyond His grasp.
God loves us and will never leave us!
During the week, we are learning how:
1) the Relationship began
2) the Relationship was broken
3) the Restoration was Promised
4) the Relationship was restored
5) the Relationship continues
Our VBS motto is “Searching the
Visible, Discovering the Invisible”.
Our Bible scripture is Colossians 1:15
& 16b. “The Son is the image of the
invisible God, the firstborn over all
creation. All things have been created
through Him and for Him.” What a
wonderful verse to remind all of us
how awesome our God is!
Our mission outreach this year is
Family Promise. Each VBS Depart-
ment will visit the mission, learn
about what the mission does, and de-
liver much needed items that have
been brought from home. All of our
offering collected during VBS will be
given to Family Promise. The children
will learn that they can be missionar-
ies right here in Carteret County. Our
VBS IS making a difference in our
community!
CHURCH MISSION OUTREACH
FOR JUNE: Our church body is also
involved in our mission outreach by
donating items needed by Family
Promise. Our Mission Committee will
take these items to Family Promise at
the end of June. YOU also can help
make a difference by bringing a needed
item and putting it in the grocery cart
in the Welcome Center!
It is such a blessing to work alongside
our many talented volunteers for VBS.
Whether you are working in VBS, praying
for our VBS, providing cookies/ cupcakes
for everyone, or giving to the church so
that our VBS can be funded, YOU are
playing a very vital part in the success
of our VBS!!! Thank you for being a
part of such a special week in our
church!
Please continue to keep our VBS in
your prayers! Seeds are being planted
this week that will last for a lifetime.
Those seeds must be watered & fertilized
to grow. Lives are being changed! God
knows what is going on in each child’s
heart! I am so proud to be a part of a
church that supports Vacation Bible
School. Churches around the country are
canceling VBS because they cannot get
enough volunteers to work. Churches in
Morehead City are doing the same. If
we do not invest in our young people,
our church will be in serious trouble.
Thank you, First Baptist, for being such
a dedicated congregation for God!
In Christ,
Diane Poag,
VBS Director
