Fans know "This Little Light of Mine" as a beloved children's tune, recognized around the world. But it's also a spiritual, which was transformed by the nation's civil rights movement into an anthem of singular power. And the song has the same impact in today's times, where demonstrators still leverage its message to push back against injustice. Last year, Reverend Osagyefo Sekou used "This Little Light of Mine" to curb passions during a counter- protest, before a crowd of white supremacists and alt-right supporters gathered for the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Va. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v= HsK7gC4noJU "We had originally said we were going to stand silently," says Rev. Sekou, a recording artist, author, theologian and activist who helped train volunteers at the counter-protest. "But the Nazis were marching past us in these various battalions, cursing and yelling — mostly homophobic slurs — at us. And you could feel the energy of the people who weren't with us, who we had not trained. [They] were getting amped up." Sekou says he knew, in that moment, he had to change the atmosphere. "I know song can do that. So I just broke into 'This Little Light of Mine.' " In a moment captured on video, the clergy and volunteers who sang — a group that included famed academic and activist Cornel West — are shown standing in a line, their voices rising over the chants of "You will not replace us" from the rally crowd. "The tensions went down ... and it shook the Nazis," Sekou says. "They didn't know what to do with all that joy. We weren't going to let the darkness have the last word." It makes sense that a song with this much power would also be one of the most versatile anthems around, inspiring all kinds of musical artists. Rev. Sekou brought a different version of the song to NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series in July. Before that, Bruce Springsteen used it to take his audiences to church, playing a gospelized version during his tour with The Seeger Sessions Band. The Disney Channel built a 2012 movie around the song, called Let It Shine, that added rap. The tune even brought a little soul music to the last royal wedding, courtesy of British gospel artists Karen Gibson and the Kingdom Choir. Sometimes, experts say, such folk songs become spirituals over the years, sung everywhere from churches to prison work camps. That might explain a version of the song sung by Doris McMurray, an inmate at a Texas prison, recorded by folklorists John and Ruby Lomax in 1939. McMurray's tone is both plaintive and mournful as she sings without accompaniment, insisting that "In my neighbor's home, I'm gonna let it shine / Let it shine let it shine, let it shine." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v= Kmg34_dv9sw So who created "This Little Light of Mine"? Some books credit Harry Dixon Loes, a teacher and composer born in 1892 who edited at least a dozen hymnals and songbooks and wrote more than 3,000 songs, according to his 1965 obituary. That would be an interesting cross- pollination: a white composer creating a song popular in black churches. But researchers at Moody Bible Institute, where Loes taught for 21 years, say they found no evidence he wrote the song or claimed to write it. They note that he did create a popular arrangement of it in the 1940s: Singers like George Beverly Shea and Helen McAlerney Barth recorded versions of it. But once the song was popular, it belonged to everyone. As the civil rights movement grew in the 1950s and '60s, singers changed the lyrics to reference their struggles. These new versions were known as "freedom songs." "They are simple melodies that can be sung by a small group or a large group," says Robert Darden, a gospel music historian and professor at Baylor University in Texas. "And the lyrics are composed in a way that the names of who they are protesting against can easily be inserted. They can be personalized and set to a place." Did You Know . . . That September is Hunger Awareness Month? Over 247,000 households in Wisconsin experience hunger or are at risk of hunger. Our nation's most powerful tool for fighting hunger is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a program that in Wisconsin is called FoodShare. This program helps 700,000 Wisconsinites meet their nutritional needs. Congress is now debating changes to the Farm Bill, which provides funding and sets the rules for SNAP. Many of these changes would hurt children, seniors, veterans, working families, and others who struggle to get enough to eat.

Walking the Bible: Book of FaithThursdays, September 20 & 27; October 4, 11,18 & 251:00 pm and 7:00 pm Each DayThe next Book of Faith Bible study will take us on a jour-ney by land through the five books of Moses with a video that takes us from the birthplace of civilation (Mesopo-tamia) to Mt. Ararat to Harran to Egypt and then back to the Promised Land. It took the Israelites 40 years but we will do it in four sessions, led by Pastor Stephen. When you read the Bible, have you ever wondered what the landscape looked like? How high are the mountains? What was the Dead Sea like when Lot's wife looked back? Where is the Reed Sea that Moses crossed? Here is your opportunity to see what the land looks like from the comfort of our own adult learning room.

LELC’s Racism History Film SeriesSeptember 29; 1:00 pm - First FilmLake Edge Lutheran Church is beginning a film series on the history of civil rights efforts and white supremacy in the US and the world. The showings are free, and childcare will be provided upon request. Please call the church, 222-7339, if you want to bring children, so we can arrange for child care. If no one answers, leave a message. We will call you back. If no one asks for child care, it will not be provided.

Our first film will be “A Son of Africa: the Slave Narrative of Olaudah Equiano.” This powerful BBC documentary recon-structs the first influential slave narrative, the autobiography of Olaudah Equiano, which helped rouse the conscience of Europe and America against the shame of slavery.Equiano’s story begins with his capture in West Africa in 1756 and recounts the horrors of the Middle Passage and everyday slave life on a Virginia plantation. Slavery, he would observe, brutalizes not just the slaves but the masters and all of society. Resold to a British naval officer, Equiano learned to read and write, bought his freedom, married into English society and became a leading ab-olitionist. But it was his book, The Interesting Narration of the Life of Olaudah Equiano or Gustavus Vassa, the Af-rican, which vividly demonstrated the humanity of Afri-cans as much as the inhumanity of slavery.

Adult Education for September, 2018Join Us in the Adult Ed Room Sundays at 9:30 amSeptember 16: How to be a good citizen of Lake Edge Lu-theran. This session will cover information that all LELC members need to know, or to know better: our Consti-tution and Bylaws; “The Wheel,” our obligations as mem-bers; and good meeting protocols. As an LELC member, you not only have a right to, but should, participate and speak up at meetings. This session is meant to give all of us more knowledge and more confidence to participate in the governance of our church. Some old hands with experience and knowledge will explicate our documents and lead discussion. We’ll have one more such session in October, in case all questions aren’t answered in Sep-tember!September 23: “Faces of Incarceration” Have you ever met someone who spent time in pris-on? "Faces of Incarceration: Changing the Narrative” is the theme of the portrait exhibit on display at LELC through September. Six paintings are here from the orig-inal 50 that were shown at the Overture Center in July 2017. Brief stories give a glimpse into the portrait sub-jects’ road back to community. It is an invitation to see the larger picture of their journey. Pat Dillon curated the original exhibit and wrote the stories after interviewing the individuals in the paintings. The paintings were done by numerous Madison artists. Bring your questions and comments to the discussion with former jail chaplain John Mix, one of the artists, will speak, as will one of the featured portrait subjects. September 30: Discussion of the book "Trouble I’ve Seen: Changing the Way the Church Views Racism" by Drew Hart. By the date of this discussion, many of you will have read the book. We’re selling it in the narthex on Sundays for $10.86, which covers the book price and shipping. If this is cost prohibitive, just pay what you can afford. This book is a “Synod-Wide Big Read,” so we study it in conjunction with a number of other churches in our syn-od. The author, Drew Hart, will speak at Advent Lutheran on December 1. We hope some of us can attend that talk.If our discussion on September 30 results in people want-ing to talk more about the book, we’ll schedule another Adult Ed session for it.

MOSES MeetingSunday, September 9; 3:00-5:30 pm1st United Methodist, 203 Wisconsin Ave.Lake Edge Lutheran belongs to MOSES! MOSES worked to close down abusive juvenile facilities and re-place them with small, local facilities that keep youth close to their families. MOSES seeks to cut prison popu-lations to save millions in tax money while rehabilitating prisoners within the community, in contact with their families and work and training opportunities. MOSES also works with released prisoners through the organi-zation EXPO, Ex-Prisoners Organizing.

The first Thursday of every month Lake Edge Lutheran Church provides the menu and dines as guests of Luke House. We serve 165 children, women, and men. We never have too much food. What may appear as left-overs feeds people at Luke House’s lunch program or is taken to men at Port St. Vincent for the lunches they take to work.We humbly ask God to move our community to reveal the Spirit of Christ in our midst. Finance & Property September 2018Wisconsin has an over abundance of rain this summer, the lakes are full, the streets are flooded. The church leaks like a sieve. The roof is leaking, flooding in the choir room, flooding in Good Shepherd Hall, flooding in the men's bathroom that gathers in the hallway and ceiling tile wet in many places. But don't worry. Finance and Property are not asking for funds to fix these problems. We are asking for huge donations to build the ark. Go to Genesis 6:14-17 for the construction designs for Ark II. I am really not sure where to find gopher wood though! Because the church building is getting older and because we tend to have torrential rains, these problems will continue. Much needs to be done to fix the the flooding issues.Fall clean-up will be scheduled for October, watch for the dates in the Bulletin and Dialogue. We will need many, many able volunteers to do this work. If 40 people joined in this effort, the work would go fast and also be fun. Hope to see many of you there.

August DashboardThrough seven months, our attendance has held at a steady monthly average even during construction! Member giving is slightly behind budget and with our checking account balance about equal to our average monthly expenses, it's important that we have a strong finish to the year. Remember, our goal is to have a 2:1 ratio of our checking balance to our average monthly ex-penses. Special thanks to Nancy Pike and everyone else who has helped generate proceeds from garage sales. This will be a much needed boost to our finances!

With Heartfelt ThanksI would like to say a very special thank you to the entire congregation for all of your love and compassion you have shown me during this time of incredible loss for me as I deal with the loss of my partner, Jack Galloway. Both Jack and I have always felt so at home here. There is no place quite like LELC. Thank you for your love and support and lots of hugs! Blessings to you all--Jay.

Family Camp at Outlaw Ranch 2019Greetings! It's time to think about summer 2019 Family Camp at Outlaw Ranch. All families are welcome: parents & kids; grandparents & kids; parents, kids & grandparents; couples; cousins; aunts & uncles; even a "family" of friends.Lutheran camping has always been special. Camping as a family is very special. You have time together and time apart. You watch your children (grandchildren) grow in friendships, trust and faith. You worship together; eat delicious meals together; attend campfires together; and go on canoe outings together. Bible studies are taught in age groups; some horse trail rides are in age groups; crafts, paddle-boarding, gold panning, hikes, and games are scheduled according to your interests. The camp is nestled in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. Custer is the nearest city. The views at Outlaw are gorgeous. It is a handicapped-accessible camp. The high-er elevation may make it more difficult to breathe, but the secret is to just move more slowly! The cost is $475 for adults; $375 for youth (3-12); under age 3 is free. (Cost includes food, lodging, activities, coun-selor-child care). There are special rates for sharing a cab-in or lodge room. Additional costs include gas, food and lodging during travel; camp shirts/hats etc.; money for the snack canteen, and one camp offering. For pictures, videos, and more information, go to www.LOSD.org Choose: Outlaw Ranch.Lake Edge campers will be happy to tell you about camp; help fund-raise for camp fees; apply for scholarships, if need-ed; and "caravan" to South Dakota together, if desired. Our group will choose which week we will attend. Regis-tration opens the first Monday in November. We hope to have a group of members ready to register that day. Thus, we start now: Sign up now! Indicate if you "need more information". Sign-up on the bulletin board at church. Have questions? See Mary Graper.

Christ the Solid Rock AnniversaryOn October 27, 2018, Christ the Solid Rock Baptist Church will be celebrate our 15th Church Anniversary, kicking off with a banquet at the Sheraton Hotel at 706 John Nolen Drive, from 5:00-7:30 p.m. We invite you to join us and par-ticipate in this milestone in our history. Pastor Torey Franklin, Senior Pastor of Walking in His Image Ministries of Fort Worth, Texas, will be the keynote speaker. Brianna Lawren Ware, composer, pianist, violinist, and 2017 winner of the Madison Overture “Rising Stars” Competition will provide entertainment, and there will be much more!

(Continued from page 1)Fannie Lou Hamer, Zilphia Horton and other legend-ary activists sang "freedom song" versions of "This Little Light of Mine" and passed them on for others to use. One place where a lot of this sharing occurred was the Highlander Folk School (now known as the Highlander Research and Education Center), a cultur-al center in Tennessee where activists including Rosa Parks, Pete Seeger and Martin Luther King Jr. gathered to trade ideas.Candie Carawan — who worked with her late hus-band Guy, Highlander's former music director — says songs like "This Little Light of Mine" could be nonvi-olent weapons. "It's a way to speak to power in way that's not going to get you shot," Carawan says with a chuckle. "It's a way to say, 'This is what we think. This is what we feel.' But, you know, you're singing it.""Some of my favorite spirituals are the ones that have an implied defiance to them," Robert Darden adds.

According to genocide theory, American history has been decisively marked by two genocides: 1) against the indigenous people of this continent and 2) against enslaved African people. Dr. Craig L. Nessan is William D. Streng Professor for the Education and Renewal of the Church, Academic Dean, and Professor of Contextual Theology and Ethics at Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa.
