“All the Goss” Most of you would know John Obolevics and his gorgeous "OZYUTE", most would also know him and his partner Trish Creedon have been organisers of the Australia day Ute Run. At the October committee meeting John, Trish and Sue Davies from Variety put a proposal to the club on taking over the organisation of the event, the committee agreed to the proposal. Then at the AGM the subject was put forward and endorsed by the membership. The format will remain and Variety will always be the beneficiary but the clubs profile will be raised in our involvement. Steve Moller had put up his hand to help, John will still be involved in next years event and assist in the handover. In past events we have either run a BBQ or assisted in the competitions but further assistance will be required for future function and I urge all of you to get on board.

“Bathurst”

It’s the time of year where petrol heads of all persuasions are locked to the TV (or the lucky few who actually get to be there) to watch the great battle on the mountain, this year was the 50th anniversary of the event and the last of Holden vs Ford. In fact several of our members went to this historic event. Paul Whittaker took leave to make it a double header with a holiday of a life time, the AFL Grand final and then Bathurst. Doing it in style and making the most of it he made camp at Forrest Elbow and spent four glorious days on the mountain. Here’s a bit of what he had to say….. It was awesome, believe me when I tell you its much much better actually camping on the mountain and being right there in the thick of the action than stayin at home and watchin it on the TV. (We did have our own TV set up on the big day at Forrest Elbow so we didn't miss a single moment of ALL the Action) We arrived early in the week to set up camp and check out the good viewing points around the track for the lead up to the Big Race. First night it got down to a chilly 1 Degree, then it warmed up only down to 6 Degree another day, On Sat /Sunday there was a freezing cold wind blowing across the mountain around day break then again at dusk. This did not deter the fans or the 8000 or so campers scattered around the mountain side. The Gods were on our side as there was no rain, hail or snow as some predicted. We had a party all week long, it was a magnificent week end of motor sport. Plenty of side alley stalls, on and off the track entertainment, demo’s, not to mention a dozen or so different promotional track / grid girl groups, handing out free stuff and only too obliging to jump in front of the camera with you. Did you know it takes approx 1 1/2 Hrs to walk the complete race track and at least an esky full of refreshments. They say it is a rise of 180 Metres to the top from the start grid, and it ain’t easy trying to walk that mountain track with a loaded esky, except if you ride the esky down the hill as some did.

Katrina Bangay also made the pilgrimage, but the story behind this is just amazing. A family icon was lost with the passing of her father and after years of persistence to return her Dad’s LJ XU1 to the family she had resigned herself to the fact that it was probably lost forever. The whole family used to go rally driving in this car on weekends and the memories of this car go back a lifetime. Unbeknown to her, Katrina’s brother had secured the car six years ago and undertook a complete rotisserie restoration in secrecy. All was unveiled at a huge gathering of family and friends. Although it doesn’t go into the ‘Tattooist’ nor how the restored Sunbeam Alpine gets into the picture, turn to page six of this newsletter for more details.

With the car now in immaculate condition the only thing to do was to share it with the world. She shouted the trip to Bathurst, complete with campervan the works and the car was set up with 140 GTR’s and XU1’s to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Brocky’s first win in a Torana.

“Supercheap Bathurst Show” The flyers were late and the call was put out only a few days before the event but it was a great roll up of over 20 Holdens for the Annual Supercheap Bathurst show. As tradition dictates it Holden vs Ford display but sadly only a four Fords showed up. I have to say that the Fords that did show up were very impressive with a couple of Mustangs, a beautifully original 1948 Mercury and that gorgeous GT40, (they all came home with prizes).

The clubs committee and volunteer members were a well oiled machine and the marquee, BBQ and display was set up in record time. The BBQ did great business with soft drinks and sausage sanga’s on sale and the crowds were steady through out the day.

After many months off the road with transmission issues Rex Hales once again presented his HT Prem in fine style.

With Judging complete it was onto the presentations; CHCC winners were Wilko Van Syl ‘Best Original Holden’, Damon Wagland ‘Peoples Choice’ and Harry Mellios ‘Best Holden’. All participants went home with Meguires ‘goodie bags’ stocked full of posters, stubbie coolers and T shirts etc.

On behalf of the club I’d like to say a big thank you to Ray Younger and his Supercheap staff for putting on the event and special thanks to members who help set up and pull down the display as well as serving on the BBQ, it takes a load off the committee and we are grateful. Last but not least thanks to the members for entering their cars, there wasn’t much notice on this one but you all answered the call….

“AGM”

About a dozen cars lined the Esplanade ready for the run. The day was perfect and everyone was ready to go. After jump starting Joe Mathews Torana it was a quick cruise through town to the delight of the cafe set along Mitchell st. A few stragglers joined enroute to the Dripstone cliffs and with a brief natter Damon came up with the idea to line up all the Toranas.

I think this has to have been the best attendance of Toranas till date, you could have been mistaken that it was the "Torana Club" that had their AGM. Paul Rubie's HR wagon made it's debut on the run, he had just got it up from 'down south' and it was registered just prior to the event. Taking off to our final destination we suffered another breakdown, Dave Souter's HK Premier refused to start, the old screw driver across the starter motor got him going again. That's the third time in as many runs that he has had this problem and he took a detour to swap it with his HZ ute.

Finally we all made it to the Hidden Valley club rooms to the sound of screeching tyres of the 'State of Origin' Drifting competition between SA & NT. Once we were all seated the meeting went like clockwork. The Executive committee were all re-elected and the only change on the committee was that Larrie Dean was elected as Amanda Reed stood down due to various other commitments which includes a new bub on the way.

After the meeting the BBQ was stoked up and everyone kicked back to watch the action on the track with a good feed and a few refreshing drinks. The sport of drifting is taking off round the world and Darwin is well supported with a bunch of committed people who like nothing better than ripping around Hidden Valley sideways at speed. After seeing a couple of bingles it's safe to say that this could be an expensive sport.

Wrapping up I'd like to thank all those who nominated and all those who have helped out in the past, it’s the committed that makes this club what it is…..

Page 6: This Issue - Classic Holden Car Club NT news November 12.pdf · driving in this car on weekends and the memories of this car go back a lifetime. Unbeknown to her, Katrina’s brother

Long time CHCC member Katrina Bangay is an absolute Holden nut, and has been all her life and she owns a swag of desirable cars and recently got re-united with the ultimate car. Ultimate not only for what it is but what it meant to her entire family. A month or so ago she posted in facebook and I just had to call her up hear the story. I tell you it's amazing to hear in the first instance, here it is in her brothers words.....

The phone went dead, and with tears streaming down my cheeks he was gone! No warning, no time to get used to it, just gone. But the blows hadn't finished, once the will was read out, the car was gone too. A car that had been part of our lives as long as I can remember. You see, Dad was a bit of a jokester and the running joke with his mate was "when you kick the bucket you gotta leave me the car" so he did, "Shit"!! While we were devastated I'm not the one to mess with a mans wishes so the car left the family. We were bummed but what do you do.

Fast forward four years, the phone rings, "I've had a stroke and can't do the car. So the car came home, during it's four year holiday my sister tried to buy it back a numerous times with no success so you'd think I'd ring her up straight away and tell her "Nup"… I had bigger plans, much bigger, Nothing much happened for the next few years then with a year and a half to go before the 10th anniversary of Dad's passing it was go time! The car was stuffed, full of rust and everything on it basically worn out from being a daily driver its whole life I'd bitten off more than I could chew so it was time to chew like crazy.

The fact that it remained a secret from my sister and my mum for six years was a miracle in itself, both of them came within six feet of the car on numerous occasions yet the cover was never blown. On the second of June 2012, nearly ten years to the day it was revealed The car you see here was never a one man job and could not have been made the dead line without the help of some generous and talented people. The list is long and and illustrious and they know who they are and I'm forever in your debt, thank you all. It was never about the car though, it was always about him. Paying respect to an amazing man, his words haunted me the whole time through the build, "I'm gonna restore it" Well Guess what, we beat you to it. Miss ya heaps.
