2012 REPORT TO
THE COMMUNITYFiscal Year 2010-11
The last year has seen its share of challenges—from horrific instances of intimate partner violence and sexual assault in our communities to the continued difficult economy. Nationally, 8 out of 10 domestic violence shelters reported an increase in survivors seeking services while at the same time, 79% of shelters across the country received fewer contributions.* We’re seeing the same here in Kentuckiana. But we know that in the face of tragedies and barriers, it is our respon-sibility at The Center for Women and Families to be good stewards of what we do have. We’re honored and humbled by your dedication to volunteering with us, by the generosity you provide in donations year after year, and by the critical moments you share with our crisis counselors, advocates, therapists and community educators. It is my personal goal to emphasize the need for responsible stewardship throughout the agency and within our Board of Directors, and we are already getting results. The individuals and families who come to us for help see real benefits from this commitment.
Our vision for the way we do our work is bold and is driven by our continued focus on prevention. We are developing innovative pro-grams including the Children Who Witness Violence Collective Impact Initiative, a collaborative effort with individuals and organizations throughout our community, and we’re engaged in a new partnership with Metro Police to drastically reduce the rate of domestic homi-cides. Additionally, we’re instituting a Sexual Assault Expert Response Team to improve our services for survivors, and have launched “Male Voices,” a focused effort to involve more men in our mission.
We invite you to stay engaged with The Center, through your dona-tions of gift cards during the holidays to the hours you spend serv-ing meals to our clients. Our work toward eradicating violence from families and communities while being excellent stewards of your time, funds and trauma continues. We couldn’t do it without help from all of you.
A thousand thanks, Marta MirandaPresident/CEO (Chief Empowerment Officer)

THE CENTER FOR WOMEN AND FAMILIES helps victims of intimate partner abuse or sexual violence to become survivors through supportive services, community education and cooperative partnerships that foster hope, promote self-sufficiency and rebuild lives.
*2011 Mary Kay Truth in Abuse Survey
What We Do With YourThe Center for Women and Families’ volunteers are key to our clients receiving the help, respect and compassion they seek when they come through our doors. Volunteers are intertwined with every aspect of our services—in courtrooms, in our kitchen and in offering childcare for our youngest clients, to name just a few ways—but Hospital Volunteers provide clients a critical presence. Elaine* went to a downtown hospital after an acquaintance she’d known since high school sexually assaulted her. After explaining her situation to the charge nurse, the nurse called us. Jenice, a Hospital Volunteer, arrived quickly and explained to Elaine that she was there to listen, to sit quietly, to help process her experience; whatever Elaine needed during those terrifying hours of having her rape kit performed and recounting the details of her assault to her medi-cal providers and to the police. Elaine later told an advocate at The Center, “I’m not sure how I would have gotten through that night without Jenice’s calm. She made me feel like I’d be able to trust people again.”
Without ongoing dedication from staff, volunteers and supporters, The Center could be just another social service agency. But our engaged constituents—like you—are dedicated to high impact social change. Our vision is to live in a community free of power-based personal violence. We know enough and care enough to get there.

What We Do With YourWe know that survivors of intimate partner abuse face unique challenges, so our advocates meet clients where they are and offer resources to help meet goals clients set for themselves. Often those goals are around housing, school or professional advancements, and individual donations along with generous grants help us fund initiatives that make reaching goals a reality. Our Economic Success Program is just one terrific example of how our clients can escape dependence on their perpetrators and achieve financial self-sufficiency. Abusers often use tactics like dictating how money is spent or prohibiting separate bank accounts to maintain financial power and control in a relationship. At The Center, we try to provide the opposite experience. Tracey* left her abusive boyfriend when she was 7½ months pregnant, desperate to find a different path for her kids. She stayed in shelter, working full-time at a pharmacy and saving money during her daughter’s infancy. She was able to afford her own apartment and joined our IDA (Individual Development Account), a savings program that matched every dollar Tracey saved with two dollars from The Center. Now Tracey and her daughter live in their own house, paid for in part with her IDA, and she works as an interpreter. Allison, The Center’s Housing/Economic Success Program Supervisor, calls Tracey a true success story.

Nearly half of residents in The Center’s emergency shelters are children. Like many of our services, the essential programming facilitated by our Children’s Team relies on donated goods, funds and services.

What We Do With YourWe are stewards of our community’s trauma. It’s one of the most sobering responsibilities our staff car-ries at The Center for Women and Families. Good stewardship means we respond compassionately to the terrified children who arrive in shelter with their exhausted mom. We listen carefully to a client as she tells us how her relationship disintegrated into violence. We pet the family dog who came to The Center with a man fleeing his partner. We care for each other as a staff susceptible to vicarious trauma after seeing one battered client after another. And we offer a tissue to the community partner shaken after a tour of our sexual assault clinic. The work we do is about each individual we touch, each life we save, each child with a restored future, but the work needs to get bigger. We will reach women, men, and children before they are affected by violence. We will create a community that knows how to intervene when signs of intimate partner violence and sexual assault begin, as people learn to transform from inactive to active bystanders. Those will be critical moments.

Our Art Therapy workshops are a fundamental part of treating trauma experienced by survivors of abuse or sexual assault. Art is often a route to healing when words are insufficient, and the act of making can be tranfor-mative for our clients.
Pictured: A client paints a clay tile she created as part of The Center’s Hope/Change/Home installation at our Joan E. Thomas, M.D. Campus. Art Therapist Frances E. Englander, MA, ATR-BC, LPAT worked with art-ist Joyce Ogden to facilitate a series of workshops for our residential and nonresidential clients. The project was funded by a generous grant from Kentucky Foundation for Women.
