This is the mark scheme and teacher guidance for the PUMA Extension Autumn test
This free teacher guidance provides what you need in order to administer and mark the Autumn test. It contains the:
■ mark scheme and marking guidance for the test
■ facility values for test questions
■ raw score to standardised score conversion table.
The Spring test, and accompanying mark scheme and guidance will be available in Autumn 2017.
More extensive teacher guidance will be provided in the full PUMA 6 Extension Manual, which will be published in Spring 2018, together with the PUMA test for Summer. The PUMA 6 Extension Manual will also include the following information, to assist you when using PUMA across the whole key stage:
■ strand level performance information
■ age-standardised scores, mathematics ages and Hodder Scale scores for predicting progress
■ further information about interpreting and analysing results
■ technical information about the standardisation
■ answers and mark schemes for the PUMA Summer test.
In Autumn 2017, the mark sheet and question level analysis for the Autumn test will be available as part of the online analysis and reports service.
In Spring 2018, the mark sheets and question level analysis for the Spring test will be available as part of the online analysis and reports service.

pumaWays to use PUMA 6 Extension Tests
Progress in Understanding Mathematics Assessment (PUMA) provides a standardised assessment of a pupil’s mathematics attainment, and a profi le of mathematics skills, which helps you to identify those pupils who may need further support and those who may be exceeding expectations. The new PUMA 6 Extension papers (Autumn, Spring and Summer) have been created to monitor and support those pupils who are exceeding expectations. Schools may fi nd different ways to utilise these tests, such as:
1 If a pupil is following an accelerated pathway and has used Year 6 PUMA tests in Year 5, they may take the PUMA 6 Extension papers throughout Year 6.
2 At the end of Year 5, a pupil with a raw score of over 45 marks (Hodder Scale score 5.4) may take the Autumn PUMA 6 Extension paper to see how far ahead they might be, and to explore if they are likely to be over a scaled score of 110 in the Key Stage 2 national test.
3 If a Year 6 pupil has a raw score of over 42 marks (Hodder Scale score 5.6) on an Autumn or Spring Year 6 test, they may take a PUMA 6 Extension paper to see the extent to which they are working at depth.

When to testThe PUMA tests should ideally be used just before the end of term, as they have been designed to assess the National Curriculum objectives presented in the PUMA curriculum map for that term.
TimingA maximum time of 45 minutes is advised for each of the PUMA 6 Extension tests.
PreparationEach pupil will need the appropriate test booklet plus a pen, a pencil, an eraser and a ruler. No calculators or other equipment should be used.
Administering the testGive each pupil a test booklet. Ask them to write their names on the front cover. The other information can be supplied by the teacher or teaching assistant.

pumaOnce the pupils have completed the test, their answers may be marked using the answers and mark scheme found in this chapter.
Marking the answers ■ Mark boxes in the right-hand margins of each test booklet indicate where a
mark can be gained.
■ Some questions have more than one part, or attract more than 1 mark, so you should follow the mark scheme carefully, using your professional judgement if necessary. For example, accept minor reversals of single digits but not reversals of 2-digit numbers. Equally, any clear indication of the answer is acceptable irrespective of what was asked for, e.g. a tick or a circle.
■ For scores to be valid, you should not award half marks.
Marksheets for scoring the test and providing question level and gap analysis will be available in the Autumn term when the tests are designed to be taken.
