EFFICIENCY + MARKETABILITYYou may already know we have the brains of a national research university and the heart of a small college. But we also offer the savvy of a technical college with the breadth and employment advantages of a broad-based university education.

The Capstone Option at SIU Carbondale puts you in the fast lane to a bachelor’s degree in Capstone-approved majors if you already hold an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree or equivalent certification. How? We’ll abbreviate your University Core Curriculum requirements. Instead of the 41-credit-hour requirement for most students, Capstone students have a 30-credit-hour requirement. That means you can earn a bachelor’s degree in just 60 additional credit hours.

THE CAPSTONE OPTION.

SIU: WHAT YOU NEED.

COMPLETING A BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE THROUGH CAPSTONECapstone students satisfy the following minimum University Core Curriculum (UCC) requirements through appropriate transfer credit or coursework at SIU Carbondale. Here’s how it breaks down:

English Composition ................................................. 3 English 101, 102 or 120H with a grade of C or better

Mathematics .............................................................. 3Math 101 or higher, except 107, 114, 120 and 300I

Social Science........................................................... 6Select two courses from different disciplines

Humanities ................................................................. 3Fine Arts...................................................................... 3Multicultural............................................................... 3

A minimum of 120 semester hours, including work earned at SIU Carbondale and elsewhere, is required for a bachelor of science degree. Students must also meet university requirements for residency, credit hours and minimum grade point average, and must complete all program requirements as specified by the degree-granting unit. A minimum of 42 hours of 300- to 400-level work must be completed at a four-year institution as part of the 120 semester hours needed for the bachelor’s degree.

You can find more information about transfer credit applicable to the UCC requirements at articulation.siu.edu. This information, along with all other policies regarding bachelor’s degree completion, is also available in the SIU Carbondale Undergraduate Catalog.

THE CAPSTONE QUALIFICATION PROCESS:1. Admission to SIU Carbondale. Submit your

Undergraduate Admission Application. On the application, answer “yes” to this question: “Do you have, or will you earn, an AAS degree or certificate?”

2. AAS degree. A technically oriented associate degree, or equivalent certification, with a minimum of 60 semester hours must be earned before more than 12 hours is completed in the Capstone-approved bachelor’s degree major.

3. Transcripts. All transcripts and other documentation (test reports, military credit, work experience or additional documentation needed to determine Capstone eligibility) must be sent to the Registrar’s Office, Articulation and Evaluation, and received no later than the end of your first semester at SIU Carbondale.

4. Verification. A student is eligible for Capstone if the student is admissible in the Capstone participating program.
