Special Interest Day, Sunday March 25th

THIS IS ROCKET SCIENCE - An Advanced Maths and Science course by Oxbridge Masterclasses Ltd

9-11.30am: Workshop on Engineering Structures - Bridge Design, given by Guest Speaker Tony Neal of Royal HaskoningDHV This includes the following activities -

• Working in pairs, students design and build their own model bridges • Students test their model bridges to destruction - this is done as a competition • Announcement of Winning Team(s) and prizes awarded • Session Wrap-Up12-2.30pm: VEX Robotics Workshop, delivered by the Bloodhound SSC team This exciting and dynamic hands-on introduction to coding includes the following -

• Programming and testing the VEX robots to complete a challenge • Competition and prizes awarded to Winning Team(s) • Session Wrap-Up3-5.30pm: Pyrotechnics Rocket Car Workshop, delivered by the Bloodhound SSC team The day’s fun culminates in this fantastic activity delivered by the Bloodhound SSC teamThis includes the following activities -

• Designing and building your own Pyrotechnic model rocket car • Race cars in a competition

• Announcement of Winning Team(s) and prizes awarded • Session Wrap-Up

• A Presentation - what to consider when designing and building your own model rocket car

• Data Analysis - data will be used to calculate average velocity, force and acceleration for comparison with today’s racing cars

• A Presentation introducing the Bloodhound SSC Project: building a 1000mph car, challenges overcome and technology involved in this unique engineering adventure.

• A Presentation on Engineering Structures and Bridge Design considerations/ principles

Outline of Activities

At the end of the day’s activities, a concluding presentation will be delivered by Richard Blaine Note that students may also have the opportunity to get involved with a Laptop Strip and Rebuild session as well as Coding with Lego Mindstorms. This is subject to availability on the day. Students will be organised into groups, each group with an allotted time for each activity.

Additionally, those students feeling brave are more than welcome to try some of the challenging brainteasers our students face on a weekly basis. Time permitting, we may be able to host a game-show style quiz. In this way, visiting students get to experience most of the activities enjoyed by our students attending weekly.
