F history – In 1855, John Wesley North settled in what would become Northfield for the great hydrologic power potential and abundant natural resources. North built a saw mill then a grist mill and a bridge. Today, MOM Brands (Malt-O-Meal) still operates a mill in the same location established by North, and Northfield is the only place in the world where its hot cereal is produced.

F the town that Stood tall – On September 7, 1876, the James-Younger gang rode into town, intent on robbing the First National Bank of Northfield. When the holdup was discovered by local citizens, they began to arm themselves to face down the gang. A battle ensued and lasted only seven minutes. When it was over, two robbers lay dead in the street and the remaining six outlaws fled the town. It is the extraordinary courage and independent spirit of these townspeople that is honored on the weekend after Labor Day each year during Defeat of Jesse James Days.
