Dear Parents,

With concerns growing over the coronavirus (COVID-19), we know many of you are making plans to keep learning going should the State of Delaware close our schools.

We understand this is a huge inconvenience and want to do everything we can to support you. With that in mind, the Indian River School District is delivering optional self-paced instruction using approved Elementary curricular materials to help keep your child engaged in the educational process.

As an IRSD Elementary student, your child has direct access to both the Benchmark Advance ELA and Bridges Mathematics curricular resources, along with other, district-approved supporting resources, through the Clever portal. Your child can access any and all of these resources in the event that schools are not in session.

For those that do not have access to a device or the internet (or those who just want a break from the computer for their child), we have provided other, non-digital activities in which your students can engage. We understand that this is not the optimal way of delivering instruction, but under extreme measures we must do what we can. We appreciate you helping to educate your child to the best of your abilities while helping stop the spread of COVID-19 in the State of Delaware.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: INSTRUCTION AT HOME DURING EMERGENCIES

Keep things simple and set realistic goals each day:

● Dreambox or iReady: 20 minutes of engaged interaction in one sitting.

● Benchmark Advance and The Math Learning Center/Greg Tang math websites - 20 minutes of engaged interaction in one sitting.

● Reading: ○ Read to your child, read with your child, or encourage your

child to read – 20 minutes each day. ○ Engage your student with their Benchmark Unit 6 magazine by

engaging in some of activities on the “Daily Take-Home Activity Calendar” for Unit 6 (Appendix A).

● Writing: ○ Encourage your child to write for 15-20 minutes in one sitting.

Remember:

● The information in this document is a suggestion and not mandatory assignments. You may want to vary the time(s) and/or subjects. For example, you may want to alternate subjects...completing reading in the morning and math in the afternoon.

● You may want to set a timer to begin and end activities. ● We have attached a weekly log for you and your child to keep track of his/her

activities and foster discussion around the content (Appendix B). ● Engage with your child...ask them about the book or activity they completed. ● Many students are most fresh in the morning, so that is the best time for them to

tackle reading and math. For younger children, build in breaks for play time and physical exercise.

CLEVER PORTAL to Access Benchmark, iReady, and Dreambox Computer Directions

How to Sign-in: It is recommended that you use Google Chrome as your browser. 1. Visit www.irsd.net and select the header “Parents & Students”> Then select “Student Portal” >Then Select “Clever”.

2. Next need to log into your Indian River School District Google account. Please enter your IRSD Google username and password to sign-in. More Elementary Resources and Ideas:

● Reading: o Read to your child, read with your child, or encourage your child to read –

20 minutes each day! o Engage your student with their Benchmark Unit 6 magazine by engaging

in some of activities on the “Daily Take-Home Activity Calendar” for Unit 6 (Appendix A).

● Writing: o Encourage your child to write for 15-20 minutes each day. Vary the topic

about which they should write: ▪ Narrative:

● Describe your favorite place in the world. ● Give your child a picture – a photograph, from a magazine, a

picture on your phone; have them write a story about what is happening in the picture.

● Read your child a short story; have them write an alternative ending.

▪ Opinion/Argument: ● Which pet is better: a dog or a cat? Why? ● Year round school: A good idea or not? ● Who is a special person in your life? Why?

▪ Informative: ● How to play their favorite sport. ● Conduct some research around their favorite animal and tell

10 interesting facts. ● Steps to take in a process (getting ready for school in the

morning, making their favorite snack, doing homework, etc.). Math:

● Number of the Day Journal. Choose a number of the day. Ask your child to do some or all of the following…but do not limit yourself to these suggestions:

○ draw a picture ○ decide if it is odd or even ○ write as many equations that produce the number ○ represent the number with money

● Go on a math scavenger hunt. Choose a range of numbers (1 – 10, 10 – 20…you decide) and have your child/children find the number of objects that match the numbers. For example…1 apple, 7 lemons, 4 chairs

around 1 table. See how many combinations they can find! Choose a different room or type of object each day.

● Practicing math facts is always a way to keep up on basic skills. Flash cards and card games can be fun!

● Cooking or baking?! Practice measuring and counting! Read picture books…any picture book and simply ask your child/children, “how many?” or “what do you notice?” or even “what do you wonder?”…and wait…see “how many items they can see or find within the picture. Family fun:

o Play a board game or a game of cards o Spend some time in the kitchen – making dinner, a snack, or a special

dessert together – talk about the steps you are taking o Make a game out of household chores - make up silly songs about

cleaning, have a competition for who can fold the most socks or clean up/straighten up the room most thoroughly, counting games with picking up toys, etc.

o Engage in physical activity together - go for a walk, ride a bike, pay catch!
