PE is a very important part of our school curriculum. You will have many opportunities to join a wide range of activities in Year 7. Lessons in Year 7 will cover netball, football, racquet skills, athletics, rounders and cricket together will the exciting skills of orienteering. We expect all students to wear proper school kit during lessons.

Our kit is simple, but smart. If you forget your kit you are expected to borrow a clean PE kit from the department. We offer everyone the chance to join in any of our many sporting teams. Remember, if you are unable to take part in your PE lesson you MUST bring a note from home explaining the medical reason.

Jewellery is dangerous in PE so no one is allowed to wear any

in practical activities.

• When you move around the school walk quietly keeping to the left in buildings;

remember other people will be working, if not in classrooms then in other rooms like offices and meeting rooms.

• Running, shouting and not thinking about other people is not an acceptable way

to behave around our school. • At the beginning of each lesson (except practical areas like Science,

Technology and PE) you are expected to enter quietly, take off your coat, get out your equipment and then to sit quietly, waiting for your teacher to begin the lesson.

• Always move from lesson to lesson without wasting time. You will be in trouble for being late.

• Do not be rude in any way to other students, members of staff or any visitors to the school.

• Litter bins are to be found in every classroom and outside the buildings, please use them to keep school clean.

• Use the toilets at breaks and lunchtime. We do not

disturb lessons unless it is an emergency.

• Chewing gum IS NOT ALLOWED anywhere in school. • It is not appropriate to wear jewellery in school because it can be dangerous in many practical lessons. The school will not accept responsibility for jewellery or any other valuable item that is lost, stolen or damaged in school.

Remember it is important to be kind to others. You will be making new friends and may even be having chats on social media out of school. Please be very careful when using social media. Leaving others out and using social media to say mean things is not how we should use it. This can cause friendship issues and fallouts in school. Mental Wellbeing describes your mental state, how you are feeling and how well you can cope with day-to-day life. Our Mental Wellbeing is dynamic as it can change from moment to moment, day-to-day, month-to-month or year-to-year. Moving up to secondary school can be a daunting prospect for many, you will no doubt be feeling a mixture of excitement and nerves. There is lots of support in school we can provide to help your mental well-being and ensure a positive transition. We also have some great links on our website. Check them out!

If you arrive early to school the Cafeteria in Social Block serves breakfast items and hot drinks. If you arrive late to school you may receive a 30 minute detention the next day. Listed below are the important times of the school day. Don’t worry, you will soon get used to them. On your Induction Days the school day will be a bit different so the bells will ring at slightly different times. The School day is:

If you do miss your bus, report immediately to Student Services, don’t try getting home without letting Student Services contact home first. If you lose or deface your bus pass it will cost £5 to replace it. Bus passes are issued by the Local Authority and students must travel on the bus indicated on their pass.

So why is homework so important?

• Doing homework regularly and well helps you to organise yourself and your time away from school and lessons.

• Doing homework give you the chance to solve problems and think for yourself.

• We want you to show your parents the homework that is set so that they can also share in your learning.

• Being independent with study is critical at GCSE level so getting into good

habits early will give you a head start for when you are expected to prepare and revise for exams.

• Get logged into Show My Homework as soon as possible—keep your log in details safe so that you are always able to access your homework

• If you are not sure what to do, ask your teacher to explain again.

• Make sure you allow enough time for each piece of work.

• Always check through your work thoroughly before giving it in to be marked.

• Always hand homework in on time.

• If you have had difficulty with your homework or you have not been able to do it, don’t panic, just bring a note from home explaining the problem. You can also send a message to your teachers via Show My Homework to ask for help and advice.

• Always work in a place quiet enough for you to concentrate well (we have after-school homework clubs).

• Get your parent/carer or other adults to discuss your work with you or get them to test you on a learning homework. Parents get their own log in for Show My Homework so they can support you with the organisation of your time and work.

• Finally, learn to enjoy doing your homework. Remember, success is built on hard work.

Mr Roberson will provide you with log on details for Show My Homework once you

start with us in September.

Before they move to secondary school some people are often concerned about rumours they hear about bullying. Always remember that the school will treat bullying as serious misbehaviour and you must report it to a teacher, older student or your parents/carers if ever you are bullied. The following are suggested responses to any form of bullying that you come across.

If together you and your parents/carers are unclear of what to do, contact the school and ask to speak to your Year Manager or your Personal Tutor. We also have support booklets for parents/carers and students.

We also have our own website: www.heritage.derbyshire.sch.uk which contains a page that you can use to tell us if you are being bullied.

Suggested responses and strategies for dealing with bullying

Important rule: Always report bullying so that it can be dealt with

Tell a teacher and your parents/carers

This gives the message that you are in control and not scared. It also allows the school to deal with the bully.

Stay with a crowd Bullies tend to pick on people who are on their own. Being in a crowd means that you are less likely to be picked on.

Be assertive – we are here to help and make sure that you are happy.

Everyone in our school community needs to work together to help and support one another.

All students deserve the highest quality education. Our “Ready to Learn” behaviour posters are displayed in every classroom. These provide a clear, fair and consistent framework that is understood by all. RESPECT Code of conduct The Ready to Learn ‘Respect’ code of conduct is

the fundamental expectation that all stakeholders in the school are

expected to adhere to. Students who break the

Respect code of conduct will be challenged and appropriate sanctions will be issued.

The definitions of RESPECT are:

• Responsible – being accountable for one’s behavior and actions.

• Equipped for learning – having the necessary equipment for school.

• Supportive – providing encouragement or emotional help.

• Punctual – attending school every day and on time.

• Engaged in learning – on task and making progress in all lessons.

• Co-operative – always happy to assist and a good team member.

• Trustworthy – honest.

“Behaviour is good” (Ofsted 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2020)

Good behaviour is an expectation at Heritage High School. Good behaviour

provides the right atmosphere for learning and encourages students to develop into balanced, socially aware citizens.

We recognise that occasionally incidents of poor behaviour may occur that require a sanction. Our “Warnings” poster provides a clear and consistent sanctions system. Other sanctions we use are those common to other schools: detentions for missed work, report cards and in severe cases, withdrawal from groups.

Our Ready to Learn policy ensures that when our high standards of behaviour are not met, it is dealt with quickly, fairly, firmly and consistently.

Respect

When things go wrong

The school operates a cashless system which gives parents/carers greater control over how you spend the money in your account. At Heritage we use Biometrics (fingerprints) to pay for food in the canteen.

We offer a very good school meals service. Meals are served in the Cafeteria in Social Block at both brunch and lunch times. There is a wide range of menus on offer and the dinner staff are always producing new ones for you to try.

You can buy both hot and cold food. A meal deal including a sandwich or hot meal, desert and drink costs £2.40 but you can buy individual items if you prefer. Students who choose to bring a packed lunch also eat in the Cafeteria.

The Cafeteria also serves breakfast and hot drinks from 8.00am to 8.30am each day.

We expect everyone to use table manners and to remove outdoor clothing and hats when having their lunch.

Students are NOT ALLOWED to leave the school site during brunch or lunch times.

Training shoes MAY NOT be worn in the dining areas or classrooms at lunchtime or at any other time.

School Support Assistants (Lunchtime Supervisors) are employed to look after students at lunchtime and brunch time. They are valuable members of staff and as such should be shown the same level of respect and consideration as teachers are. Disrespect towards School Support Assistants will be taken very seriously and may lead to you being asked to have your lunch with a member of staff or being placed on lunchtime report.

Remember, EVERYONE at Heritage is an important person. We must treat everyone as if they are special, because they are. Treat each person you meet politely, always try to be helpful, thoughtful and considerate. We expect everyone to behave this way.

In Year 7 there are many new people to meet and work with but perhaps the most important of these is your PERSONAL TUTOR.

Heritage High School operates a horizontal tutoring system which means each Tutor Group contains the same age group of students. The Year 7 Personal Tutors have been carefully selected to work with Year 7, with several having done transition work with our primary schools throughout the academic year.

Each student will also become a member of a House. Inter-House competitions will be arranged throughout the year.

Your PERSONAL TUTOR will …

• Help you to settle into Heritage School; • Help you to understand how the school works; • Help you to celebrate your successes; • Help you to keep doing your best at all times; • Be the person most likely to be involved with your family; • Help you to check your progress in all subjects; • Help you to set targets for improving your performance; • Set up interviews with home to discuss your progress; • Join in many activities outside the classroom; • Help if things don’t go according to plan.

The teachers you meet in every lesson will also encourage you to do well and help you to find ways of performing at your best.

We work best at Heritage when we work like a family, look after each other and help to include everyone.

When you have a problem REMEMBER there is always someone there to help. Everyday problems are usually fairly easy to solve. The first and most important person you can talk to is your PERSONAL TUTOR. He or she will be able to answer most questions and take away most problems. Your Tutor may refer you to another member of staff, Mr Tweddle, your Year Manager or Mrs Kingham Assistant Headteacher. Here are a few problems with solutions. When you have a problem there is a simple rule to follow. First - DON’T PANIC, ask a member of staff, if they can’t solve the problem themselves they will help you to find someone who can.

If you are in a lesson tell your teacher. If you are not in a lesson go to Student Services. Someone there will help you.

Lost property is handed in to Student Services so if you have marked all your clothes and equipment properly it will soon turn up.

Everyone must explain why they are absent. It is always best to get an adult from home

to phone school (01246 810259) on the first day that you are ill. If we don’t have a call to say you will be off school for any reason your parents/carers will receive an automated message to say you have not registered. When you return to school, always bring a written note, signed by your parent/carer, explaining why you were absent. If you are absent for a few

days we can arrange for work to be sent home so that you don’t get behind.

If you get to school after 8.40am go straight to Student Services and sign in. This is really important, just in case there is an emergency. It isn’t good enough just to go straight to your lessons. Lateness is treated very seriously.

Moving from your primary school to Heritage High School may mean for the first time, you will have to travel alone without a parent/carer on a day-to-day basis. Please don’t worry, together we can overcome any fears that you have. To help you think ahead, please discuss the following questions with your parents/carers.

• Where will the bus leave from?

• What should I do if I miss the bus?

• What should I do if I get lost?

• What should I do if there is trouble on the bus with other students?

• What other problems might there be? If you miss the bus in the morning you should have planned who to contact. If your parents/carers are still at home, then you should go back home. However, if they have already left the house then have the details of a friend, relative or neighbour who can help to sort out getting to school. If you miss the bus after school, then you should go back into school and ask for help from Student Services, your Personal Tutor or Guidance Manager. It is always helpful to have details of the buses that run somewhere near your home and to have some money kept for emergencies. You can use this to ‘phone home or to pay for a bus journey if necessary. Remember to put your home telephone number, school telephone number and a neighbour’s number in this booklet and your Planner.

If you get lost DON’T PANIC. Go into a shop and ask them if they would telephone your parents, a neighbour or the school.

If there is any trouble on the bus report it to your parents/

carers and your teacher at school. It is always a good idea to sit near the bus driver away from those who may cause problems on the bus. If you have not travelled on your own on a bus before, you could do the following things before you start at

Heritage:

• Travel on the service bus to Heritage;

• Make sure that you know where and when the buses leave from and return to.

We will tell you whose Tutor Group you will be in as soon as possible. Write the teacher’s name here:
