.THE GREATEST AMONG US Whom do you admire? Is it the President of the United States or a mov-

ie star or a billionaire? These are people whom the world exalts as great.

Like the Pharisees in today’s Gospel, they have places of honor wherever

they go. Would you like to follow in their footsteps?

The scriptures for today offer different examples for us to follow. Jesus

tells us that the greatest among us are the servants. These are the people we

are to honor and imitate. We are called to be like Paul, who worked hard to

serve the needs of his communities, and Jesus, who gave his life in service

to the world. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

Matthew 23:1-12

“The scribes and the Pharisees have taken the chair of Moses. Therefore,

do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example.”

Lord Acton wisely observed that “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupt absolutely.” Sadly, Lord Acton is

right. During the life of Jesus the Romans, through Pilate, the governor, exercised absolute power over the life and destiny of

everyone in Palestine. And he was absolutely corrupt. The chief priest, who was appointed or approved by the Roman

Emperor, along with the scribes and Pharisees, exercised absolute power over the People of Israel. They used that power to

take advantage of the people through oppressive dietary and sanitation laws, and taxes. When Jesus said to do what they said,

but not what they do, he was condemning the abuse of power by the Jewish leaders and challenging them to stop making

the people afraid of God and to teach the Israelites about a loving, caring, compassionate, and forgiving God. The Jewish

leaders were so concerned that the people would believe Jesus and that would cause them to lose control of the people, so the

plotted to kill him. And they succeeded. Is that not absolute corruption?

National Vocation Awareness Week (Nov 5-11)

Did you know that in our country, compared to 50 years ago, there are 20,000 fewer priests and 130,000 fewer religious sisters?

At the same time, the Catholic population has continued to grow steadily. Many factors have contributed to the decline: growing

secularism, a lengthened period of adolescence, attitudes about celibacy, etc.

During the week we encourage all Catholics to:

Take time to pray for vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. Reflect on our own vocation and strengthen our personal

relationship with Christ. Participate in the CALLED BY NAME process. Invite and encourage young people to consider a vocation

to priesthood or religious life and to consider participating in our discernment opportunities. Educate our young people about the

importance of silent prayer and taking the time to truly listen to God's voice in our hearts

2nd Collection-

I would like to invite the parishes of our diocese to plan on a special collection on the weekend of November 4th and

assistance and Catholic Charities USA for assistance to US. dioceses . Confident of the always generous response of
