things for us; we are glad indeed. -- Psalm 126:3
Wedding Banns II David Binkley & Ashley Recklet
Men’s Bible Study Our parish has a very active group of men, who for more than 16 years, have met each Saturday at 7:30AM in a "round table" format to discuss the Sunday scripture readings. It is very informal and attended by some scholarly and not-so-scholarly folks. It’s rewarding and even some fun. Bring your coffee and come on over to St. Thomas More parish hall!
Bereavement Support Program The Office of Life and Family will offer the Our Lady of Sorrows Bereavement Support program at
St. Thomas More Church, 53 Rockland St. (parking lot side entrance), Narragansett, on
Wednesday evenings 6:30 pm ~ 8:00pm, November 7th through December 12th (no meetings on Oct.31 and Nov. 21).
This support group provides a peaceful place to share and learn about grief with the spiritual
comfort of our Catholic faith. It is most appropriate for adults at least three months
beyond their loss. There is no cost to attend! For registration/information, contact: Peter Magnotta at 421-7833, ext. 217
Second Collection
The second collection next weekend, November 3rd & 4th is for hurricane relief. As we continue to see images of the devastation left in the wake of Hurricanes Florence and Michael, it is important that we come together to reach out to support those affected by these disasters. The widespread damage, tragic suffering and loss of lives present an overwhelming challenge to relief efforts and agencies such as Catholic Charities and Catholic Relief Services. Please make checks payable to St. Thomas More. Your support is appreciated.
Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Last week Mark "made an example" of James and John, the sons of thunder. In today's Gospel passage he gives us an example of faith in Bartimaeus, whose name means "son of fear" (our English word "timid" is in there). Most of us can identify with James and John during those times when we would like to acquire or think we have obtained places of honor and authority. We can also identify with those times we are timid, fearful, unsure. Perhaps because he was sightless, Bartimaeus was able to tell that there was a certain something special and out of the ordinary coming down the road that day. Like most blind people of his time, he spent his days begging for alms or food, hoping to get enough to sustain him for one more day. So he had nothing to lose in crying out to Jesus for help, and in accepting Jesus' invitation to come and be healed. SHHHHHHHH . . . Scripture scholars have long noted the "Messianic secret" in Mark's Gospel, wherein Jesus attempts to silence people who have discerned his true identity. In today's miracle-the last Jesus will perform in Mark's Gospel before entering Jerusalem to meet his suffering and death-Mark reverses this pattern. When Bartimaeus cries out to Jesus, Son of David, it is the crowd that tries to silence him. This time, however, Jesus himself invites Bartimaeus, who has already displayed his faith in crying out to Jesus for healing, to come forward, to be vocal about his faith and to regain his sight. Giving up everything he has (for a beggar, his cloak), Bartimaeus does come forward to "see" Jesus' identity revealed, and to go forth proclaiming the Good News of his renewed life. Last week we learned that true discipleship exists in living for the service of others; this week we learn that true discipleship is in accepting the invitation to faith in Jesus, and going forth to shout that faith to everyone.
November 4-10, 2018 National Vocation Awareness Week
Each year the Church sets this week aside “to promote vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life through prayer and education, and to renew our prayers and support for those who are considering one of these particular vocations.” Please pray for an increase in vocations to priesthood and religious life in the Diocese of Providence. If you are discerning priesthood and have questions, please contact Fr. Christopher Murphy at the Office of Vocations by phone at (401) 331-1316, by email at FatherCJM@gmail .com, or vis i t CatholicPriest.com.
