Father’s Focus
Every so often, in the worship of the Church, certain things happen differently. For example, sometimes a priest uses incense, or he may sprinkle people with holy water, or
people are blessed with ashes, or their throats are blessed with candles. These actions are
intentionally different than “business as usual” but the Church does nothing without
meaning… especially within her liturgies.
One of these minor traditions, which we are going to experience next Sunday, is the wearing of Rose vestments. Why does a priest wear rose vestments on the fourth week of Lent? First, this weekend marks the halfway point between Ash Wednesday and Easter. The Church uses this Sunday as a hopeful reminder that our Lenten sacrifice is halfway over and Easter is soon approaching. Second, this weekend causes us to be aware of the great joy of Easter that is coming and prepares our heart for the last stretch of Lent. Third, historically, this Sunday is called “Rose Sunday,” not only because a priest wears rose colored vestments, but also because the Pope would send out roses to Catholic heads of state in Europe on this weekend. Fourth, it was also a Sunday when weddings could more freely be celebrated in the midst of Lent and also a day when slaves would be released to go home and see their mothers.
Thus, Rose Sunday, has come to be called “Latare Sunday” or “Rejoice Sunday.” “Latare” is the Latin word for “rejoice” and is the first word in the opening antiphon for Mass on this Sunday: Rejoice, Jerusalem, and all who love her. Be joyful, all who were in mourn-ing; exult and be satisfied at her consoling breast. So this Sunday is a day characterized by Lenten reprieve and the joyful expectation of Easter. For this reason parishes can put more flowers on the altar (which is usually during Lent) and can use more upbeat, celebratory mu-sic.
So, since this Sunday is “Rejoice Sunday” I have chosen to celebrate First
Communion on this weekend during a Sunday Mass. Why? First, this is a weekend
characterized by joy and Easter expectation, which fits the First Communion theme. Second, since it is a day on which we use a special color, the use of Rose will help young people see their First Communion as a special day. It will also associate the use of Rose to their memory of First Communion. Third, just as this day is a “Lenten reprieve” and weddings are more
generously allowed on this day, so too, celebration of First Communion, which is a union with a child to Jesus, is fitting for this weekend. Finally, and most practically, as a Pastor, I desire our first communicants to receive Communion on Easter Sunday of the first year they get to receive Jesus. Many parishes wait until after Easter to do first communion. I prefer to do it before so they can receive Jesus on the day we remember Jesus is risen form the tomb!
So this Latare Sunday please keep your first communicants in your prayers as they truly celebrate something to rejoice about!

living chastity within their marriage, raising chaste teens and will provide parents with resources to face these
challenges. If it all possible, it is highly recommended that both you and your spouse attend the parent retreat.

The mission trip/retreat begins Sunday evening and concludes Friday afternoon. A mission team of seminari-ans and other dynamic young adults facilitate each Prayer & Action week. This team and the parish adult leaders will be with the students at the worksites, working side-by-side with them to paint, clean, do yard work, and other tasks for those in need. In the evenings, the team will lead Collatio, the retreat portion of Prayer & Action. Collatio is perhaps the most im-portant part of the day as the students pray, worship, and grow together in Jesus Christ. If you are interested in attend-ing Prayer and Action this summer space is limited so please email [email protected] or call Emily at
