Third Sunday of Advent – December 11, 2016
Mission Statement We, the Christ-centered community of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, commit ourselves to be a warm and welcoming Catholic community of faith; proclaiming the message of Jesus through a
strong and vital sacramental life, active ministry, and loving outreach.
Dear Friends,
“The blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised.” Jesus has quite a résumé. When asked whether or not he is the long awaited Messiah, Jesus replies with this list of his credentials as proof of his position. These signs and wonders speak volumes, to be sure. But perhaps the most interesting line on the list is his concluding one, “the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.” Why does he count this among his litany of miracles? What is so remarkable about sharing good news?
Perhaps Jesus included this element of his work--the preaching of good news--to remind his followers that the physical healings were not the ultimate goal of his mission. Rather, the spiritual healing that comes from hearing the good news of salvation is what Jesus was really about. The “poor”--which in a sense means all of us sinners, trapped by the poverty of the sins that enslave us--are freed by Jesus’ message of a loving God who wants to bring us into his kingdom. Our poverty is erased by his richness. His mercy “undoes” our sin and we are invited to become the children of God who share in the glories of his heavenly abode.
Sometimes it’s tempting to just want the visible miracles. But the invisible ones--the conversions that take place in the silence of the human heart--are truly the more important works of God. Such interior transformation is what leads us to eternal life; even a physical cure won’t last for eternity--death still comes at some point. But the really good news is that this miracle of conversion is available to all of us. And this season of Advent is the perfect time to let God work his miracles in
our hearts. Let's make Christmas this year The Best Weekend Ever! Don't forget to sign up for liturgical ministry as well as taking note of our Mass Schedule for Christmas and New Years. If you are a registered parishioner you will be receiving a letter from me with the schedule to post on your refrigerator. THIS MONDAY evening is the Advent Area Pastorate Reconciliation Service here at Seton at 7:00pm! Please join together with members of Our Lady of the Fields and St. Joseph's in receiving the gift of God's forgiveness during this season of Advent!

Respect Life Message: “A child is loved because he is one’s child: not because he is beautiful or because he is like this or like that… Not because he thinks as I do, or embodies my dreams. A child is a child: a life generated by us but intended for him, for his good, for the good of the family, of society, of mankind as a whole.” — Pope Francis, General Audience, February 11, 2015. © 2015 Libreria Editrice Vaticana. THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT; GAUDETE SUNDAY Joyful anticipation Gaudete is Latin for “Rejoice!” The church tells us to rejoice, but not in a be-happy-on-demand kind of way. Advent gives you a reason to be joyful, as you are when you know that someone who deeply loves you is on her or his way. It is anticipation; it is hope that comes from trusting that the promises of God will be fulfilled. Is there a promise you need to fulfill, someone who is waiting for your visit, a phone call, a letter? Don’t wait until Christmas to bring someone joy—not with a material gift, but with a simple reminder that God is good. TODAY’S READINGS: Isaiah 35:1-6a, 10; James 5:7-10; Matthew 11:2-11 (7). “They will meet with joy and gladness, sorrow and mourning will flee.”
MONDAY, DECEMBER 12 FEAST OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE
Am I not here? When Mary appeared to Juan Diego on Tepeyak Hill on the outskirts of present-day Mexico City, she said to him, “Don’t be afraid. Am I, who am your Mother, not here?” She also said, “Know for certain that I am the perfect and perpetual Virgin Mary, Mother of the True God,” and she called him, “my little one.” Juan Diego was not a little boy—he was a grown man. Still he was Mary’s “little one.” Mary is our Mother. And if she is our Mother, why are we afraid? Seems so simple, yet for many it is a profound realization. And no matter how old we are, we are still Mary’s “little ones.” Spend some time with your Mother Mary and thank her for being with us. TODAY’S READINGS: Zechariah 2:14-17 or Revelation 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab; Luke 1:26-38 or Luke 1:39-47 (690A). “Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 13
MEMORIAL OF LUCY, VIRGIN, MARTYR Let your light shine In the darkness of these Advent days, Saint Lucy stands as a shining example of the gift of faith in this world. Martyred in fourth-century Italy after being outed as a Christian by a disappointed suitor, Lucy is one of only seven women included in the original Eucharistic Prayer. Said to have worn a crown of candles into the dark catacombs of Rome to serve the poor, Lucy reminds us that bringing light into the darkness of the world is a costly venture. Faith, though, calls us to shine bright, no matter the cost. TODAY’S READINGS: Zephaniah 3:1-2, 9-13; Matthew 21:28-32 (188). “I will leave as a remnant in your midst a people humble and lowly, who shall take refuge in the name of the Lord.”
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 14 MEMORIAL OF JOHN OF THE CROSS, PRIEST,
DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH Respect reformers John of the Cross is revered with one of the highest honors possible, named a “Doctor of the church” as a saint of particularly high importance. Yet during his life, a group of superiors from his own order who opposed his visionary reforms forcibly imprisoned him and subjected him to cruel treatment and public lashings in front of his community. Perhaps as John sat in his cold, dark jail cell, Jesus’ line about prophets being honored except in their home town came to mind. Be slow to criticize modern-day reformers; perhaps they have a message we need to hear. TODAY’S READINGS: Isaiah 45:6c-8, 18, 21c-25; Luke 7:18b-23 (189). “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?”
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15
ADVENT WEEKDAY Prophet-able thoughts Do you think about prophets like you do about fortune-tellers? Prophets predict the future, right? Well, not in God’s world they don’t. God’s prophets have the job of making people aware that God wants to be first in everyone’s life. God has a call and an invitation for everyone. Today, when the temptation is to focus on the 10 shopping days until Christmas, what do you think John the Baptist would say to call your attention to God’s presence in your daily life? In the eyes of God, what really matters on this Advent day? Ask today for the grace to see God’s presence around you. TODAY’S READINGS: Isaiah 54:1-10; Luke 7:24-30 (190). “I send my messenger ahead of you to prepare your way before you.”
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16 ADVENT WEEKDAY
Let your light shine Jesus told his followers not to hide their “lamp under a bushel.” But why would anyone shield their inner light? Perhaps we fear that we’re not worthy of the greatness of being a child of God, says author Marianne Williamson. “Your playing small doesn’t serve the world,” she writes. “There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.” In her book, A Return to Love, she urges everyone to “make manifest the glory of God that is within us” and “give other people permission to do the same.” TODAY’S READINGS: Isaiah 56:1-3a, 6-8; John 5:33-36 (191). “John was a burning and shining lamp.”
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17
ADVENT WEEKDAY Cue the Magi The Magi begin their long trek across the East, and we’re glad to honor these Wise Men of old. But we need even more the wisdom of men and women of this generation, and every generation, to show us how to build a better world. The genealogy of Jesus contains a surprising list of who might contribute to history’s rescue from the ways of death. As we begin the days of the O Antiphons of the church, we pray: “O Wisdom of our God Most High, teach us the path of knowledge!” TODAY’S READINGS: Genesis 49:2, 8-10; Matthew 1:1-17 (193) “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.”

Inspiring the Archdiocese of Baltimore
BY CHRISTOPHER [email protected]
PHOTOS BY KEVIN J. [email protected]
Pope Francis named two new aux-iliary bishops for the Archdiocese of Baltimore: Monsignor Adam J.
Parker, current vicar general and modera-tor of the curia in Baltimore; and Monsi-gnor Mark E. Brennan, pastor of St. Mar-tin of Tours Parish in Gaithersburg, in the Archdiocese of Washington. The appoint-ments were announced Dec. 5 in Wash-ington by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States.
At the same time, the pope accepted the resignation of Bishop Denis J. Mad-den, auxiliary of Baltimore since 2005. Bishop Madden submitted his resigna-tion on his 75th birthday in March 2015, as is the custom for bishops, but it was not accepted until the appointment of the new auxiliaries.
Baltimore Archbishop William E. Lori expressed his gratitude to the Holy Father for the appointments of the new bishops, which he called “an early Christmas gift” from the pope. “This is truly a joyous day in the life of the Archdiocese of Balti-more,” the archbishop said.
The bishops-designate will be ordained Jan. 19, 2 p.m., at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Homeland.
Bishop-designate Parker was born Jan. 13, 1972, in Cleveland, Ohio, and was raised in Severna Park. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Baltimore in May 2000 and was made a
monsignor in Sep-tember 2011. He will be 45 when he is ordained a bishop.
Bishop-desig-nate Brennan was born Feb. 6, 1947, in Boston. He was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Washington in May 1976. He will turn 70 a few weeks after the ordination.
Archbishop Lori said the arch-diocese has been blessed by the dedicated service of Bishop Madden. “I’m pleased that he will contin-ue serving our local church as our beloved auxiliary bishop emeritus,” the archbish-op said. “I am grateful for his selfless ser-vice and his willingness to continue serv-ing God’s people and I look forward to our continued work together.”
‘Life changes in an instant’Bishop-designate Parker said he
received a call from Archbishop Pierre Nov. 28, telling him that he had been nominated by the Holy Father as an aux-iliary bishop of the archdiocese.
“And then he asked me the question: ‘Do you accept?’ and I told him that I do accept and I pledged my fidelity to the Holy Father and thanked him for the call,” the bishop-designate said.
He said he was initially stunned, but
noted that there had been rumors he might be chosen.
“But at the same time, when that call comes and your life changes in an instant – really just in the blink of an eye – I have to admit it took me a few moments where I just needed to sit down by myself here in the office and consider and pray about what had just happened,” he said.
Bishop-designate Parker said it was a little hard for him to focus on the rest of his regular schedule of meetings that day.
“My real desire is to have a real pas-toral presence in the archdiocese in addi-tion to my role here as vicar general and moderator of the curia,” Bishop-designate Parker said. “By that I mean making visits to parishes, celebrating Sunday Masses in parishes throughout the archdiocese, cel-ebrating confirmations – which I’m really excited about doing – and also engaging
Pope Francis appoints two new auxiliary bishops for BaltimoreMonsignors Adam Parker and Mark Brennan will be ordained Jan. 19

my relationship with my brother priests at a deeper level.”
At a news conference in Baltimore announcing the appointments, Bishop-designate Parker said he is honored to be following in the footsteps of the Apostles, who took to heart Jesus’ exhortation at the Ascension to “Go, make disciples,” which he said will become his motto as bishop.
Archbishop Lori said he has been “blessed to work with Bishop-elect Park-er on a daily basis for much of my time since arriving as Archbishop of Balti-more. … Bishop-elect Parker is widely regarded by his co-workers and fellow priests and is well-prepared to assume the duties of auxiliary bishop, while con-tinuing to manage the day-to-day opera-tions of the Central Services offices of the archdiocese.”
‘Total shock’Bishop-designate Brennan said getting
the call from the nuncio about his nomi-nation as a bishop was “a total shock.” Considering his stage of life and what he called “modest attainments” in the priest-hood, “I was certainly not expecting to be named a bishop by Pope Francis – or any-one else. So, it really took me completely by surprise.”
He said, “You don’t get much time to react. It ran through my mind, ‘Should I say no?’ I thought, I’ve always tried to do what the church asked of me, so if this is being asked of me now, if I don’t have a serious reason to decline, then I think I should accept, so I did.”
St. Martin of Tours Parish is known for welcoming people of various cul-tures, with Masses in English, Spanish
and French. The bishop-designate speaks all three languages.
The parish has a soup kitchen, a food pantry and a tradition of direct service to people in need.
Bishop-desig-nate Brennan said he hopes to bring a love for immi-grants to his min-istry in Baltimore, noting that as a history major in college, he studied
the experience of immigrants – especially Italian, Irish and Polish, at that time – and later as a priest worked directly with people coming to this country.
Bishop-designate Brennan said Arch-bishop Lori has asked him to be available for the Hispanic community “to do what I can to strengthen the ties of the His-panic Catholics to the archdiocese and to the parishes. So, I’m going to have to visit people and talk with people and see what’s going on, get to know the lay of the land.”
Archbishop Lori recognized Bishop-designate Brennan’s four decades of priestly service “in a variety of settings, including most recently as pastor of a large parish with a significant Spanish-speaking population.”
He added, “His pastoral leadership and experience working with Spanish-
speaking Catholics suits him well for the duties of auxiliary bishop, which include helping to oversee our efforts to grow and care for the spiritual needs of Spanish-speaking Catholics throughout the Arch-diocese of Baltimore.”
At the 12:10 p.m. Mass Dec. 5 in the undercroft of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Archbishop Lori welcomed again the new bishops-designate, con-celebrating for the first time wearing the zucchetto – a violet-colored skullcap which is one of the symbols of their new office. The archbishop noted that Advent is a time of expectations.
“I guess you might say the Archdiocese of Baltimore has been going through a very long Advent, as it has waited nearly two years for bishops to be appointed. Let me say – it was worth the wait,” Archbish-op Lori said in his homily.
“Perhaps your greatest service, in the fullness of the priesthood, is to encour-age, to inspire, to lead and to sanctify many priests and deacons and religious and seminarians and above all lay men and women, so that they can be those people, whose faith is so great, and so alive that they are constantly bringing people to Jesus. …
“In a word, you assist me in the prima-ry work of raising up missionary disciples to carry forward the church’s mission of spreading the Gospel.” ●
