Pilgrimage to 2019 March for Life

St. Michael’s and the Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a

3-day bus trip to Washington, DC staying two nights in the Best Western Plus. Trip dates are Thursday, January 17 - Saturday, January 19, 2019 and include: transporta on, hotel, two

Adviento, la espera de la alegría Del santo Evangelio según Lucas 3, 10-18

Oración introductoria A medida que se aproxima la Navidad deseo seguir más profundamente tu ejemplo de humildad haciéndome pequeño ante los demás. Por eso, como los discípulos de Juan, yo te pregunto en esta oración, Señor y Dios mío, ¿qué debo hacer? Petición Señor, dame la gracia para crecer en la virtud que más necesito cultivar. Reflexión Seguramente ya sabes que la palabra "Evangelio" viene directamente del griego (eu-angelíon) y que significa, al pie de la letra, "Buena Nueva". Y es "Buena noticia" porque nos trae la alegría, nos anuncia la salvación; más aún, la llegada de nuestro Redentor en persona, de Jesús, nuestro Salvador. El mismo nombre de Jesús (en hebreo Yeshúa), significa "Yahvé salva". Y es esto lo que nos dice Lucas de Juan Bautista: que anunciaba al pueblo la Buena Nueva de la salvación. Y los exhortaba a prepararse para la venida del Mesías con obras de caridad y de conversión interior. Hemos llegado ya al tercer domingo de Adviento. Y todo él está dominado por el tema de la alegría. Antiguamente se llamaba a este día "Domenica laetare"; o sea, "el domingo de la alegría". Y si escuchamos las lecturas de la Misa con atención, nos daremos cuenta del porqué de este nombre. "Estad siempre alegres en el Señor" -exhorta san Pablo a los filipenses-; os lo repito: estad alegres. El Señor está cerca. "Que nada os preocupe ni os turbe". A pesar de cualquier dificultad o problema que nos pueda sobrevenir, hemos de conservar la alegría en lo más profundo de nuestro corazón. Si estamos esperando con gran anhelo el nacimiento de nuestro Redentor -¡y está ya a las puertas!-, no podemos estar tristes. La primera lectura, tomada del profeta Sofonías, es también muy hermosa y elocuente: "Regocíjate, hija de Sión; grita de júbilo, Israel; alégrate y gózate de todo corazón, Jerusalén. El Señor ha cancelado tu condena, ha expulsado a tus enemigos. El Señor será el rey de Israel, en medio de ti, y ya no temerás... Él se goza y se complace en ti, te ama y se alegra con júbilo como en día de fiesta". ¡Qué palabras tan consoladoras! Nuestra alegría es el Señor, que viene a redimirnos, a liberarnos para siempre de todo aquello que nos esclaviza. La alegría es esencial en toda fiesta, y con Jesús estamos de fiesta. Además, es una característica de todo buen cristiano. Porque Dios nos ama infinitamente y nos protege siempre con su providencia de Padre. Porque ya hemos sido redimidos de nuestros pecados y gozamos de la compañía de nuestro Salvador. Porque albergamos en nuestro corazón las más seguras y ciertas esperanzas de una vida feliz y eternamente bienaventurada que nos aguarda en la otra vida, pero de la que ya gozamos, de alguna manera, aquí abajo. ¡Esperamos a nuestro Redentor! Y con Dios tenemos mil motivos para estar alegres y para ser optimistas. "Si Dios está con nosotros -exclamaba san Pablo-,

¿quién contra nosotros?". Santa Teresa de Jesús -que era una mística de altos vuelos, pero también una castellana de "pura cepa" y de un realismo impresionante- decía que "un santo triste es un triste santo". O sea, un falso santo o que, al menos, no merece el nombre de tal. Nietzsche, filósofo ateo alemán de fines del siglo XIX e inicios del XX, tristemente conocido por su teoría del "superhombre" y de la "muerte de Dios", acusaba a los cristianos de haber perdido ya su rostro de resucitados. Y decía: "¿Qué habéis hecho, cristianos, del gozo que os dieron hace dos mil años?". El periodista español José Luis Martín Descalzo, en una de sus obras llamada "Razones para la alegría", escribe: "Si yo tuviera que pedirle a Dios un don, un solo don, un regalo celeste, le pediría, creo que sin dudarlo, que me concediera el supremo arte de la sonrisa. Es lo que más envidio en algunas personas. Es, me parece, la cima de las expresiones humanas... La gente que ama mucho, sonríe fácilmente. Un amargado jamás sabrá sonreír. Y menos un orgulloso". La sonrisa y la alegría van siempre de la mano. Es más, la sonrisa es como la más bella y dulce emanación de un alma alegre y serena. Es un regalo maravilloso que se ofrece gratuita y generosamente a los demás, y que brota, precisamente, del amor y de la paz. En una ocasión, un grupo de profesores norteamericanos se encontraba en Calcuta visitando las obras de la Madre Teresa. Y, después de recorrer la "Casa del moribundo abandonado" en Kalighat, uno de ellos le pidió que les dijese algo que se pudiesen llevar como recuerdo de aquella visita y, al mismo tiempo, que les pudiese servir para la vida. Y la Madre Teresa les dijo simplemente esto: "¡Sonríanse unos a otros!". Y es que la sonrisa -como dice Federico Faber- "no cuesta nada y produce mucho; no empobrece a quien la da y enriquece a quien la recibe; no dura más que un instante y su recuerdo perdura eternamente. Nadie es tan rico que pueda vivir sin ella, y nadie tan pobre que no la merezca". La sonrisa es, muchas veces, el mejor acto de caridad y de cariño que podemos ofrecer a una persona. ¡Y cuánto nos lo agradecen los demás cuando ésta es sincera y brota de veras del corazón! Yo he tenido esta experiencia en muchísimas ocasiones. Y, además, abre y conquista a las almas.
