Move over Yo-Yo Ma, Christopher Bell is coming to town.

Lake City residents will have the opportunity to see Bell, a cellist known for his warm combination of folk and rock that draws inspira-tion from Paul Simon and Randy Newman, at The Café downtown on Saturday.

Bell is going on tour to promote his new album Sirens, a body of work he said was largely inspired by his experience in the wilderness of upstate New York and mythology.

“I once spent seven weeks by myself in the wild, canoe-ing along the Erie Canal,”

Niblack principal demoted, moved

Columbia County School Superintendent Ter r y Huddleston said Tuesday he reorganized the instruc-tional leadership at Niblack Elementary School, resulting in the principal’s replacement by the assistant principal.

Marilyn Gassett, former prin-cipal of Niblack, was demot-ed to assistant principal at Pinemount Elementary School. The decision was ratified dur-ing Tuesday night’s School Board meeting when the board approved a list of personnel changes that included Gassett’s reassignment.

She will start at Pinemount Elementary on Monday, but has taken the week off until then. Niblack assistant princi-pal Melinda Moses will take over as principal.

“Ms. Moses has spent many years as a classroom teacher, guidance counselor and assis-tant principal,” Huddleston said. “These experiences will help provide her with the nec-essary skills to lead the teach-ers and students at Niblack Elementary.”

Prior to the reorganization, assistant principal Michael Allen floated between Melrose Park and Pinemount elemen-tary schools.

No one has been selected to fill the assistant principal posi-tion at Niblack. Plans are still uncertain, Huddleston said.

LAKE BUTLER — A third vic-tim has died following a Saturday shooting spree in Lake Butler.

David Griffis, 44, died at 7:39 a.m. Tuesday at Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville, following complica-tions from a gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

Hubert Allen Jr., a former employee for Pritchett Trucking Inc., fatally shot his former boss Marvin Pritchett and cowork-

ers Rolando G o n z a l e z -Delgado and Grif fis before turning the gun on himself Saturday morn-ing.

C o w o r k e r Lewis Mabrey Jr. was also wounded but was expected to be

released from the hospital soon.According to sheriff’s deputies,

Allen confronted Griffis at the Pritchett Trucking headquarters and shot in him in the abdomen before returning to his home on Southeast Sixth Avenue and tak-ing his own life.

Union County Sheriff Jerry Whitehead said Monday that investigators found a handwrit-

ten note with the names of Allen’s intended victims, indicating that that the murders were premedi-tated.

Despite the additional evi-dence, the sheriff’s office said Allen’s motive was still unclear.

United States military branches are built on pride, integrity and tradi-tion.

While those character-istics often take on heroic measure in war time, many of them are grounded in a person’s youth, and a school safety patrol is an excellent place to start learning those skills.

The Easts ide Elementary School safety patrol takes pride in instill-ing those characteristics in its members, and its spon-sors have planned a trip to Washington, D.C., where

the children can develop those skills by seeing the accomplishments of oth-ers.

Sarah Ripple and Jeanie Free are co-sponsors for the safety patrol at Eastside.

Ripple, an fourth-grade teacher, said the patrol members are trying to raise $9,780 so the children can take two field trips dur-ing the year. One trip will be local, to the Columbia County Courthouse and the county Sheriff’s Office and the other trip will be to Washington.

“We’re a Title 1 school, which basically means money can be the big-gest obstacle,” Ripple said. “We do a lot of fundraisers because we do not want

ORLANDO — George Zimmerman’s attorney is going to ask the state of Florida to pay for some of his client’s non-lawyer legal bills.

A spokesman for attor-ney Mark O’Mara con-firmed Tuesday that the lawyer plans to ask the state of Florida to pick up the bill for as much as $300,000 in expenses.

State law allows defen-dants to get their legal expenses reimbursed by the state if they are acquit-ted.

Zimmerman was acquit-ted last month of any crime for fatally shoot-ing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

The acquittal touched off protests nationwide.

Some of the costs that could be reimbursed include expert witnesses, depositions and an ani-mated video depicting Zimmerman’s account of what happened during his fight with Martin last year.

State may keep school relief

CLEARWATER — Florida may be keep-ing a safety net provision that kept more than 150 schools from getting F grades this year.

Interim Education Commissioner Pam Stewart said Tuesday that state officials will discuss in October whether to keep in place a rule that would limit a school grade from dropping more than one letter at a time.

This “temporary” rule was first adopted in 2012 but the State Board of Education narrowly voted to keep it intact for this year. If the board were to vote yes it means the rule would be in place for

grades handed out next summer.

Each year the state hands out A-to-F grades that are used to reward top schools and sanc-tion those that get failing marks.

Boy’s organs being donated

MIAMI — The family of a 12-year-old south-west Florida boy who was infected by a rare and deadly brain eating amoeba says his organs are being donated.

In a Facebook posting late Monday, the family announced that Zachary Reyna’s organs were going to others who were “waiting on a miracle.”

“Zac is our miracle,” the family’s Facebook post-

ing said. “His spirit will always be among us. He changed all of our lives, brought us closer to God, strengthened our family and his story has touched people around the world.”

Reyna became infected Aug. 3 while knee board-ing with friends in a ditch near his family’s LaBelle home. Doctors in Miami told the family late last week that the boy had extensive brain damage.

Miami Children’s Hospital spokeswoman Jennifer Caminas wouldn’t confirm whether the child has died, but she said Miami Children’s Hospital “expresses heartfelt con-dolences to this devoted family. We respect the family’s wishes and honor their privacy at this time.”

Awards. The performance marked the first time the band played togeth-er in 11 years, and also the last time they’ll do it, at least for a while.

“It would be lovely to do it, but we’ve got nothing planned,” Lance Bass told The Associated Press on Monday between breaks of his Sirius XM show, “Dirty Pop With Lance Bass.”

One reason is that Justin Timberlake begins his solo tour this fall, and Bass says the closest he’ll get to the stage is a seat in the audi-ence.

“Who knows what will happen when he’s off tour. It’s simply not part of the conversation right now. We just focused on that one per-formance,” Bass said. “If we did anything like that, I think we would come up with something real special where we could actually call it ‘The Reunion.’”

Bass, along with boy-band mates Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick and JC Chasez, joined Timberlake, who was already performing at the VMAs on Sunday night. They wanted to do something special for Timberlake for receiving The Michael Jackson Vanguard Award, the VMA’s equiva-lent of a lifetime achievement award.

While the last 15 seconds of their reunion performance made Bass feel nauseous, getting to the stage was an adrenaline rush.

“We had to perform in the middle of the arena, so there was no way of getting us out there without being seen. So they dressed us in big ole hoodies to pretend we were the stagehands. So we would push out the stage and do all the stagehand stuff until we got to the area and hid

out beneath a staircase,” Bass said. “That was my favorite part.”

Bass said just before they stopped performing, he felt queasy from nerves.

O.J.’s South Fla. home to be sold in foreclosure

MIAMI — The South Florida home of imprisoned former football star O.J. Simpson will be auctioned off in October as part of a bank fore-closure proceeding.

Miami-Dade Circuit Court records show that a judge issued a final order last week for JPMorgan Chase Bank. The 4,233-square-foot home

near Miami has been in foreclosure proceedings for about two years. The online auction of the house is set for Oct. 29.

Simpson was convicted in 2008 in Nevada of the kidnapping and armed robbery of two sports memorabilia dealers in Las Vegas. Simpson was acquitted in 1995 of killing his ex-wife and her friend.

Court documents show Simpson owes more than $796,000 is principal and interest on the property. There’s also nearly $42,000 in unpaid prop-erty taxes and insurance premiums of about $43,000.

Allen’s family could not be reached for contact when reporters arrived at his home on Sunday and Monday afternoons.

“The whole community is in shock,” Union County Sheriff’s Maj. Garry Seay said. “They’d never sus-pect this.”

Seay said he knew Griffis, a Union County native, all his life. Griffis had worked for Pritchett as a heavy equip-ment mechanic for around 10 years in various locations, he said.

“He was a very low-key guy,” Seay said. “Mild person, jokester, easy to get along with. I thought he and Allen had a good relationship.”

Seay also said Griffis was a man who enjoyed to hunt and spend time with his family. He is survived by his

wife and three children.Donations can be made to the

“There will be many hospital bills and day-to-day expenses that his wife will need help with,” according to webpage for the David Griffis Medical Expense Fund, which is attempting to raise $10,000 for the Griffis family.

Ripple said when she was a fourth-grader, she was a member of her school’s safety patrol, and although she participated in the fundraisers, she didn’t get to go on the trip.

“We decided if we were going to go, we didn’t want any kid to ever feel basi-cally left out due to money,” Ripple said. “That’s one reason why we do so many fundraisers.”

Last year the local American Legion Auxiliary sponsored three children who where then able to take the trip.

“With their donation, every student who wanted to go got to go without money being an issue,” Ripple said.

During last year’s trip to Washington, the group saw several people making etchings from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.

Ripple, who said she was in tears when she saw peo-ple making the etchings, said most of the children did not comprehend the importance of what the people were doing.

“Just being there was so emotional,” she said. “This year we’re asking that the American Legion or just anyone in the community, we’re asking that all of our

students who go have at least one name to look up and research from Lake City. The students are going to be required to get an etching from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.”

The cost per student for the trips is $489. That includes the bus ride, hotel fees, food costs and admis-sions to different attrac-tions. The safety patrol, which has 20 students, is trying to raise $9,780 total.

The Eastside School Safety Patrol has 15 fifth-graders and five fourth-graders.

Students in the patrol help younger students safe-ly get to their classes and after-school destinations. The students also help in the cafeteria during break-fast, raise and lower the U.S. flag each day, monitor the car rider line, escort lost students and help with the Accelerated Reader pro-gram in the school library.

The group will have a variety of fundrais-ers throughout the year. Ripple said fundraisers will include soliciting donations outside Walmart and car washes, as well as outings

at Moe’s, Fire House Subs and McDonald’s night where the students bus tables, mop and clean up. The students are also slat-ed to participate in the Belk Charity Sale fundraiser.

The students plan to go to Washington during spring break, March 24-28.

The group plans to wear uniform T-shirts while on the trip, and local business-es can contribute $50 to have their logos printed on the shirts.

WELLBORN — Suwannee County Sherrif’s deputies arrested a woman Sunday suspected of steal-ing nearly $25,000 in cash from a local business over about three years.

Carol Joyce Daspit, of 13040 County Road 137, Wellborn, allegedly manip-ulated accounting records for TryLand LLC, a real estate company based in Live Oak, while working there between January 2009 and November 2011.

Deputies said a forensic audit ordered by former state attorney Skip Jarvis

revealed D a s p i t w o u l d t a k e cash pay-m e n t s f r o m c l i e n t s , credit the

accounts on Quick-books, and pocket the money her-self.

Authorities believe Daspit took $24,919 between 2009 and 2011 and filed a probable cause affidavit for her arrest in July.

Daspit was released on $5,000 bond and faces a charge of second-degree grand theft.

United Way of Suwannee Valley, lead agency for the local home-less coalition, received notifica-tion from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development projects included in the homeless assistance application it submit-ted were selected for funding.

There are now six HUD-fund-ed projects in the local homeless coalition. Two received renewal funding, two are newly funded

projects and two were approved for funding in 2011 but are not yet under contract to be renewed in the current round.

Nationwide, there were 489 new projects funded, with 28 of those in the state of Florida.

The projects submitted by United Way, as the lead agen-cy for the Homeless Services Network of Suwannee Valley, that garnered renewal funding include United Way’s imple-mentation of the Homeless

Management Information System and Volunteers of America of Florida’s permanent supported housing units.

United Way received a one-year renewal of $32,146 for the HMIS system. HUD requires local homeless coalitions to maintain a homeless information management system for home-less service providers to receive grant funds.

Volunteers of America of Florida received a one-year

renewal of $128,188 for 11 scat-tered-site permanent supported housing units for chronically homeless individuals.

The 2012 HUD application sub-mitted by the local United Way also included two new projects submitted by Another Way and a homeless Continuum of Care Planning project application from United Way.

The new Another Way project funded is funded at $38,404 annu-ally and will provide additional

housing for victims of domestic violence and their children.

Two projects submitted by Another Way, utilizing the area’s HUD established pro rata need plus bonus funds, were funded during the 2011 competition and also provide for permanent supportive housing for victims of domestic violence and their dependent children.

Another Way serves Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Lafayette and Levy counties.

Gassett will continue to serve the children of the district in her new position. Even though Niblack’s school grade improved from a D to a C last year under Gassett’s watchful eye, Huddleston said the move had nothing to do with school grades.

“I’m excited for the chal-lenge,” Moses said. “We were the only school to improve last year. Niblack’s been an A school before, and it can be an A again.”

Moses said she plans to focus her efforts on improving enrollment and grades at the school. She was assistant principal at Niblack for about half a year before the promotion.

Prior to working at Niblack, she was assistant principal at Columbia High School.

Efforts to reach Gassett were unsuccessful.

Huddleston also provided insight into the first week of school during Tuesday’s board meeting.

“It was very successful,” he said.

Enrollment in Columbia County schools rose by 70 to 100 students, he esti-mated. The new entrance at Columbia High allowed more parent vehicles in the area to pick up their students. The district plans to place a walkway over the waiting area, but until then, Huddleston said he

hopes it doesn’t rain at 3 p.m.

Many of the board mem-bers praised the success of Eastside Elementary School’s Back-to-School Bash on Saturday.

Chairman Steve Nelson sat in the dunking booth along with Huddleston and assistant superintendent Lex Carswell. Board mem-bers Stephanie Finnell and Dana Brady both said they enjoyed the day’s fun activi-ties.

The board approved sev-eral items on the meeting’s consent agenda:

n Participation of Niblack Elementar y School in the Community Eligibility Option for the

National School Lunch and Breakfast Program.

n An agreement between the Columbia County School District and the Lake City Pop Warner foot-ball program for the use of two district school buses for Saturday, Aug. 17, ret-roactive.

n ESE Special Programs & Procedures Manual for the 2013-14 and 2015-16 school years.

n A contract between Suwannee Valley Community Coordinated Child Care (SV4Cs) to provides early childhood education and care to the children of teenage parents so they can complete their high school education.

Sudden cardiac arrest – when, without warning, the heart instantly stops beating – kills 350,000 Americans of various ages

and occupations a year, according to the American Heart Association.

But with high school sports teams in intensive training for their fall seasons, now is when we are most aware of these fatalities because of a tragic drama: A young athlete in peak condition, who has never flunked a physical or shown the faintest symptom of cardiac problems, suddenly collapses.

Death is usually all but instan-taneous -- but it is not necessarily inevitable, not if a device called an Automated External Defibrillator, or AED, and someone willing to use it are close at hand.

Sudden cardiac arrest is not the same as a heart attack, which usual-ly is caused by blocked arteries and often gives some advance warning. Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when

the electrical impulses that control the heart suddenly misfire.

The mild electric shock from an AED “resets” the heart and allows it to resume normal func-tion. Bystanders revive thousands this way each year. Widespread use of the devices could save at least 20,000 more, according to the American Red Cross.

Since their introduction in the 1950s, AEDs have become smaller, simpler and basically foolproof; in one study, sixth graders mastered them quickly and easily. There are about 2.5 million AEDs in the country, far short of the 30 million experts say are needed just to cover metropolitan areas and far short of the Red Cross goal of having every person in America within four min-utes of an AED.

There are no good reasons why AEDs are not now widely and read-ily available. They should be and the solution may require a certain amount of public outcry and politi-

cal attention.Uniform national standards need

to replace the often complex and inconsistent state and local rules on where and how AEDs are placed -- ordering that they be placed promi-nently ... and regularly maintained.

The AEDs should clearly display the Good Samaritan legal exception -- all states have them -- that protects from liability for injury or wrongful death people who voluntarily and in good faith try to save a life.

Says one manufacturer of AEDs, “When you’re in cardiac arrest, you’re dead before you hit the ground. There’s no way you can cause that victim any more harm using that device”

An American public that had no problem mastering smart phones should have even less difficulty with AEDs once they are, as they should be, highly visible and readily acces-sible.

The annual Child Protection Summit, running this week in Orlando, presents an opportunity to jump-start improvements to Florida’s Department of Children and

Families.The agency, which oversees child-wel-

fare interventions, is at one of its periodic low points. Its former chief, David Wilkins, resigned last month amid a sudden surge in child abuse and neglect deaths.

The summit agenda -- perhaps set months before Wilkins’ unexpected departure -- doesn’t quite reflect the urgency of the situa-tion. Still, the event (expected to draw 2,500 participants) can spread best practices as DCF works to re-establish trust and accountability.

Among the presenters will be staff from the respected Casey Family Programs, which recently signed on to help DCF assess and improve performance measures.

DCF Interim Secretary Esther Jacobo said of Casey, “The foundation brings national experts and decades of experience in the child welfare arena to this discussion.” The goal of their partnership, she indicated, is to “ensure the children and families in our care are receiving timely and effective services.”

DCF supervises and collaborates with com-munity-based care coalitions around the state. The locally oriented approach began more than a decade ago, in part to get away from past bureaucratic failures that let too many children slip through holes in the safety net.

The community-based care model has gained praise. But this year, as the Miami Herald reported, the child-protection system has been plagued with an unusual series of fatalities among youngsters whose families had prior contact with DCF. Many of these cases were in South Florida.

Child-safety advocates, who have called the number of deaths unprecedented, criticized DCF leadership, priorities and quality-control cuts.

As DCF works to reset itself, evaluations need to establish whether child-safety efforts have the preventive tools, training, personnel and funding needed.

These become especially vital in hard eco-nomic times, when children in families desta-bilized by unemployment and financial stress may be most in need of protection.

In the illusive perfect world, there would be a law against electing nitwits to public office, especially to the Congress.

I grant you that determining who fails to qualify for office under the nitwit statute would almost always be subjective, but then it might not be as hard as one thinks. In fact, just the open-ing of one’s mouth might be enough.

There are numerous examples to use. In fact, the nation’s his-tory is replete with them. Take, for instance, the lawmaker (and I use that word advisedly) who answered the accusation in a two-bit, little-circulated magazine that he was the dumbest man in the Senate by calling a press confer-ence to deny it, thereby proving the accuracy of the indictment.

The last few years have been particularly noticeable when it comes to elevating nitwits to the rarefied atmosphere of Capitol Hill, where the lack of oxygen seems to have aggravated the malady. Adoption of an anti-nitwit law might have relieved some of the mindless partisanship that has the country on the brink of finan-cial suicide and economic chaos at least twice a year.

Certainly, it would have prevent-ed voters in Michigan from inflict-ing on worried citizens a first-time Republican congressman named Kerry Bentivolio, whose only stated purpose politically it seems is to impeach President Barack Obama. He’s been telling his constituents, according to press reports, that it is his one dream to put into motion that action -- never mind that he personally hasn’t a clue how to do that. There’s is a small matter of how to accom-

plish it without any grounds for doing so.

I’m certain that a poll of those voters in his economically dis-tressed state would reveal they sent him to Washington because of a variety of issues they wanted solved and not because they wanted to overturn election of the president. If I’m wrong, perhaps there ought to be a law preventing nitwits from voting.

Others on the Hill in Bentivolio’s party hold the same view, just not quite as openly and without his eagerness. According to The New York Times, one of the leading White House antago-nists, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, doesn’t think bringing impeach-ment proceedings against Obama is the best approach to solving the country’s problems. You think, Ted? Never afraid of raising ideas outside the mainstream of rational-ity, Cruz does seem smart enough to understand that his party’s elec-toral future might require a more sane approach to political policy.

Not counting Richard Nixon, whose 1974 resignation was stimu-lated by the prospect of official removal, two presidents have faced impeachment trials: Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1999. Both proceedings were the result of ill-advised political maneuvering. Johnson completed his partial term after a tenacious

trial, and Clinton only grew in popularity after Republican “mor-alists” managed to embarrass themselves and the nation during a similar Senate exercise.

Americans have maintained governmental steadiness by eschewing interruptions in the presidential electoral process. They really don’t believe that U.S.-style democracy benefits from the constant threat of upheaval from those who don’t like the outcome of Election Day. They are willing in most cases to wait until the next polling opportunity to change things.

Obviously, Republicans don’t like the health care reforms. That’s tough. Then find the votes to overturn it and elect a president who will not veto that effort. The Internal Revenue Service scandal, such as it is, fails the impeach-ment test, too, just as the pro-longed Iran-contra investigation failed to penetrate the Oval Office during Ronald Reagan’s reign.

There is no evidence of any complicity by the current presi-dent in any activity that would qualify even for a preliminary examination of impeachment, and it does no good to the political process to even suggest it.

Clearly there will be no anti-nit-wit law, no matter how fervently wished at times. The good vot-ers of Michigan, however, might want to re-examine their election of Bentivolio. Actually, there is a process available for doing this. It’s called a recall and it doesn’t require a congressional vote in the House or an ultimate conviction in the Senate.

Marvin H. Pritchett

Marvin H. Pritchett of Lake But-ler, Florida, died August 24, 2013 at the age of 80. He was one of four victims of a tragic shooting by a former employee. Mr. Pritchett was a devoted family man, respected businessman, philanthropist, civic volunteer and a lifelong resident of Union County, Florida.He was born on April 24, 1933 as the only child of Willie F. and Berla Johns Pritchett. After their passing, Mr. Pritchett was raised by his maternal grandmother. He excelled in football at Union County High School, where he graduated in 1951. He also received a scholarship and played football at Chipola Ju-nior College in Marianna, Flor-ida where he graduated in 1952. Mr. Pritchett enlisted in the Army in 1953 and served over-seas during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1955. After his return from the war, he purchased a local tim-ber producer and began to build a business. While overseeing this company, he enrolled at the University of Florida and earned a BSBA (Business Administra-tion) degree in 1959. During this time, Pritchett Timber con-

tinued to develop and expanded into the timber hauling business. In 1973, Mr. Pritchett founded Pritchett Trucking, Inc., a large transportation company serv-ing the Southeast, where he served as Chief Executive Of-icer. In 1992, he co-founded Nextran Corporation, a network of Mack and Volvo truck dealer-ships, where he served as Chair-man of the Board. Mr. Pritch-ett was one of the founders of CNB National Bank, Lake City, Florida, a member of the board of directors of Mercantile Bank and actively involved in many other businesses including farm-ing, cattle, forestry and mining. Mr. Pritchett was active in sev-eral business and civic organi-zations, serving as Chairman of the Board of the County Com-missioners, Union County, the Union County School Board and a long time board member at Florida Gateway College (Lake City Community College). He was a past president of the Flor-ida Forestry Association, served with the Bradford - Union Coun-ty Cattlemen’s Association and a member of the executive com-mittee of the Florida Trucking Association. He was an active member of the Florida Republi-can Party and a proud Bull Ga-tor supporter of the University of Florida. His volunteer services included funding of many ac-tivities at Union County schools and First Christian Church. He was honored in 1994 by the State Department of Education

with the Business Recognition Award for North Florida and was inducted into the Union County High School Hall of Fame.Marvin was a devoted husband, wonderful father and beloved grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Margaret; his sons and their wives, Jon and Kelly Pritchett and Phillip and Emily Pritchett; his daughter Robin Pritchett Wilson; stepchil-dren, Carl Drake, Greg Drake (Rena) and Denise Willis (Mike); grandchildren, Nicole, Erika, Loren, Kendyl, Preston, Alexan-dra, Christina, Elizabeth, Cathe-rine, Austin, Ashley, Sydney and Luke; great grandchildren, Bai-ley, Graysen and by hundreds of devoted employees and friends. CHICAGO — New research suggests giving patients easier-to-take med-icine and no-copay medical visits can help drive down high blood pressure, a major contributor to poor health and untimely deaths nationwide.

Those efforts were part of a big health care pro-vider’s eight-year program, involving more than 300,000 patients with high blood pressure. At the beginning, less than half had brought their blood pressure under control. That increased to a remarkable 80 percent, well above the national average, the researchers said.

The research involved Kaiser Permanente in Northern California, a net-work of 21 hospitals and 73 doctors’ offices, which makes coordinating treat-ment easier than in indepen-dent physicians’ offices.

The number of heart attacks and strokes among Northern California mem-bers fell substantially dur-ing roughly the same time as the 2001-09 study. Dr. Marc Jaffe, the lead author and leader of a Kaiser heart disease risk reduction pro-gram, said it’s impossible to know if the blood pressure program can be credited for those declines, but he thinks it at least contributed.

Reductions contin-ued even after the study ended; in 2011, 87 percent of roughly 350,000 Kaiser patients had recommended blood pressure levels.

The study was pub-lished in the latest Journal of the American Medical Association.

In 2001, the Kaiser group introduced a system-wide program involving its 1,800 primary care doctors to tackle the problem. It cre-ated a registry of adult members with high blood pressure, based on medical records.

At the start, about 44 percent of 235,000 regis-try patients had their blood pressure under control. The registry grew and by 2009, the portion under control reached 80 percent of 353,000 patients. That compares to 64 percent of people with blood pressure problems nationwide.

Two features likely played a big role in the program’s success: In 2005, the region started using a single generic pill com-bining two common blood pressure drugs, lisinopril and a diuretic. The pill is less expensive than taking the two medicines separate-ly, and easier to use.

And in 2007, the program began offering free follow-up visits with medical assis-tants, rather than doctors, checking blood pressure readings. Besides charging no insurance copayment, these brief visits were avail-able at more flexible times, increasing chances that patients would stick with the program.

Doctors sometimes suggest taking hyaluronic acid supplements to improve recovery and minimize scarring after cataract surgery. It is fabulous for bones (think osteoporosis) and skin. Hyaluronic acid is the star ingredient in skin fillers like Restylane and Juvederm.

Supplements are touted to restore hair color (not sure about that one!) and disorders that damage the vocal cords. Since my

focus is on eyes, I’ll tell you that hyaluronic acid can be taken as an oral supplement, and it’s sold at health food stores.

I haven’t tried any brands myself. I found

eye drops with it. One is AMO Blink Contacts Lubricating Drops and the other is Oxyal.

Columbia High has an early chance at redemp-tion as the Tigers host Gainesville High in a rematch of their only regu-lar season loss last season.

Although these are two vastly different schools

with graduation taking its toll on both squads, both the Tigers and Hurricanes are expected to be among the top teams around the state this season.

“This game definitely has a buzz (with the players) just for the fact that they defeated us the last two seasons,” Columbia head

coach Brian Allen said. “They want to get a win against them after losing a couple of years in a row.”

Allen said although the Hurricanes are a differ-ent team this season, he expects much of the same from Gainesville.

“They’re going to run sim-ilar things and be a strong

run-oriented team,” Allen said. “They lost a bunch of players, but they’re still GHS.”

While this game is sure to up the intensity for the start of the season, Allen said he doesn’t necessarily like playing powerhouses at the beginning of the year.

“I’d like to play them

later on for the fact that it’d get us ready for the play-offs,” Allen said. “It’s not necessarily where I’d want to play them, but with the district being bigger this year, there’s not much we can do about that. This will be a good chance for the

FORT WHITE — Fort White High’s volleyball team got a taste of how tough District 5-4A might be.

The new district kid, P.K Yonge School, came to Fort White on Tuesday and defeated the Lady Indians 25-12, 25-10, 25-3.

The jump serves of Sammy Mueller, Gabby O’Connell and Jac’cara Walker were devastating for Fort White. Mueller had 15 service points that included eight aces. She led the Blue Wave in assists with 18. Kayla Simmons, the only

senior on the team, led with eight kills.

Despite not winning a point on serve through the first rotation, Fort White only trailed 15-10 in game one. P.K. Yonge took over from there.

Ashley Cason, Jordan Waller and Bailey Robison had two points each on serve and Leah Johnson added an ace. Rykia Jackson led with eight digs and Cason had six assists. Mallorie Godbey had three kills and she and Emily Roach had blocks.

“The biggest problem is us thinking and knowing we can win,” Fort White head coach Kelbie Ronsonet said. “The more they play togeth-er against better teams, we will do that.”

Fort White hosts Suwannee High at 6 p.m. today.

GAINESVILLE — The Florida Gators plan to have starting running back Matt Jones and middle lineback-er Antonio Morrison back in the lineup when they visit Miami next week.

Jones, hit with a viral infection in July, is near-ing full strength, accord-ing to Florida coach Will Muschamp. Jones has been ruled out for Saturday’s opener against Toledo, but should be cleared soon.

As a freshman last sea-son, Jones ran for 275 yards and three touchdowns on 52 carries.

“I certainly think he’ll be available next week,” Muschamp said. “We haven’t put pads on him yet and he hasn’t been out in the heat yet. He has been in the heat as far as running is concerned, but they’re just worried about a relapse from a standpoint of com-ing back too early. We’re waiting on the blood work to get back today. I’ll know more later.”

DEAR PUBLICITY-SHY: Nothing can be done about “drama entertainment” as long as the public has an appetite for it. The reason for the practice of “if it bleeds, it leads” in the media is that it draws viewers and listeners -- which means advertising revenue.

In the case of domestic

violence, calling 911 is the lesser of two evils. Out-of-control abusers have been known to maim and kill the ones they “love.” Ask yourself if your friend’s husband’s career was worth risking her life for. It makes more sense to risk a 911 call being broadcast than to have cameras and TV reporters camped on your lawn while the EMTs or the coroner carry your battered, bloody body out on a gurney.

Lake City Middle School had the Cooper effect in Tuesday’s season-open-ing win against Suwannee Middle School as a pair of touchdowns from Tre and Eddie Cooper propelled Falcons to a 12-8 win.

Suwannee struck the scoreboard first with a lateral pass from Alex Scarborough to Booshay McQuay from 43 yards out to take an 8-0 lead with 5:23 remaining in the second quarter after a two-point

conversion from McQuay.Lake City answered on

the following drive with its own score.

Ethan Umstead took the kickoff back 54 yards to set up the Falcons at the Suwannee 16-yard line.

Tre Cooper had a 10-yard run and Eddie Cooper capped off the drive with a score from three yards. The two-point con-version failed to leave the Falcons down 8-6.

Suwannee knocked on the door again before the half with McQuay setting things up after a 30-yard

run, but Andrew Heaton recovered a fumble with 47 seconds remaining in the second quarter to send things into the half.

Tre Cooper broke a 20-yard run to start the second half and Dylan Blair found Nate Maxwell for 25 yards on a fade to set up Tre Cooper for the go-ahead score on the one-yard line.

The Falcons led 12-8 when Suwannee took over on its final possession and the Bullpups would drive inside the Falcons’ 10-yard line before the clock expired.
