Chrisan Living - Learning Acvies

with a focus on the third Mark of Mission

Strand:

Chrisan Living

Chrisans are called to live their lives in a parcular way, with a special

emphasis on holiness, faithfulness, mercy, reconciliaon and jusce. The focus

of this strand is how the Chrisan life can provide guidance on living in a way

that loves God and neighbour, cares for creaon and provides meaning in life.

It engages with the important issues that affect young people and helps them

explore life-giving acons.

Level: Upper Primary - Middle School

Aims:

Students will:

• explore the concept of mission

• discover the five Mark of Mission

• explore the 3rd Mark of Mission

• explore human needs

• explore what responding with loving service might look like

• discover how the Church responds with loving service

• make a plan to “respond to human need by loving service”

Background Informaon:

The Anglican Church is called and sent, as are all Churches, to parcipate in

God’s work in the world. This is the same work that Jesus Christ did in all

aspects of the life of people in society. Jesus said to those who followed him

'As the Father has sent me, so do I send you.' The five Marks of Mission have

been developed by the Anglican Consultave Council since 1984 and widely

adopted as an understanding of what contemporary mission is about. Many

Anglican dioceses and other denominaons use them as the basis of acon

plans and creave mission ideas. The Marks enable Chrisans of different

countries and cultures to have a common focus as they share in God’s mission

in the world. For a more in-depth reflecon on the Marks of Mission read the

resources provided: “A Heart for Mission” by Us.

The word ‘mission’ is common in modern business circles. Most

companies and organisaons have some kind of mission statement that

describes not just what they do but something of the image they want to

project to the world. Whether they have a statement or not, all

organisaon have some kind of mission they are seeking to fulfil.

Have you heard the word mission before? Can you think of some

examples where it is used?

eg. mission control

What do you think the word “mission” means?

One simple definion might be:

“A special assignment given to a person or group”

Many companies have a statement that outlines how they see their

mission.

Complete the “Matching Mission Statements” worksheet by matching

the mission statement with the organisaon it belongs to.

Which mission statement is your favourite? Why?

Do the statement only describe what they company does? What else

might it tell us?

Like other organisaons, the Anglican Church has a set of statements

that guide its mission in the world. What makes church mission

statements unique however is that they draw their mission from the life

and teachings of Jesus (God’s mission). The five Marks of Mission provide

a good summary of how the church connues Jesus mission (God’s

mission) today.

Last lesson you wrote a mission statement for some different

organisaons. If you had to describe the mission of the Chrisan Church

what might you write? What things might it include? Where do you think

the church gets its mission from?

The Anglican Church, like other churches, draws its mission from the

mission of God as revealed in scripture. Much is drawn from what Jesus

did, from what he told his followers to do and from his teachings.

Complete the “Jesus Mission = Church’s Mission” Worksheet to find out

what some of these things are.

The Anglican Church uses the Five Marks of Mission as a summary of

their mission:

[Marks of Mission Handout]

To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom

To teach, bapse and nurture new believers

To respond to human need by loving service

To seek to transform unjust structures of society, to challenge

violence of every kind and to pursue peace and reconciliaon

To strive to safeguard the integrity of creaon and sustain and

renew the life of the earth

The Christian Church gets its mission from Jesus, from what he did, what he taught and what he

commanded. Read the following passages and list some of the things the church might do in following

Jesus mission.

Luke 4:18–19 (NRSV)

Jesus said:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has

sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go

free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Matthew 28:16–20 (NRSV)

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they

saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in

heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them

in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything

that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

43 But he said to them, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also; for

I was sent for this purpose.” 44 So he continued proclaiming the message in the synagogues of Judea.

Luke 9:1–6 (NRSV)

1 Then Jesus called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure

diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. 3 He said to them, “Take

nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money—not even an extra tunic. 4 Whatever

house you enter, stay there, and leave from there. 5 Wherever they do not welcome you, as you are

leaving that town shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” 6 They departed and went

through the villages, bringing the good news and curing diseases everywhere.

The Five Marks of Mission

The five marks of mission have been developed by the Anglican Consultative Council since 1984.

Since then, they have been widely adopted as an understanding of what contemporary mission is

about . The marks were adopted by the General Synod of the Church of England in 1996 and many

dioceses and other denominations used them as the basis of action plans and creative mission ideas.

Some churches abbreviate the five marks to five words: TELL – TEACH – TEND – TRANSFORM –

TREASURE.

In 2012, the ACC added wording to the fourth mark, to include the need for Christians to challenge

violence and work for peace.

To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom

To teach, baptise and nurture new believers

To respond to human need by loving service

To seek to transform unjust structures of society, to

challenge violence of every kind and to pursue peace

and reconciliation

To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and

sustain and renew the life of the earth

essenal physical needs such as for food, water and shelter, however,

there are other important needs apart from these. While it is important

that we help in a sustainable way with people’s physical needs oMen in

our own communies it is the less tangible needs that are before us.

We are going to focus on the Third Mark of Mission: to respond on

human need by loving service. Make a list of all the different human

needs you can think of in your community, in Australia and oversees.

Are all the needs physical?

Look at the list of humans needs on the “Human Need” Worksheet?

What do you think of this list? Where all of these on your list? Do you

think all of these are human needs? Are there any you think are missing?

Using the list on the “Human Needs” Worksheet and the “Tournament

Prioriser” decide the five needs you think are the most important? Was

this hard to do? Do you agree with the list your class came up with? Why

or why not?

Use the same process to decide the five you think are most needed in

your community?

[If it is the school community needs such as food may not be high –

discuss what needs might appear in their own school community?]

Tournament Prioritiser

The tournament prioritiser is just like a sporting tournament draw.

There are multiple rounds leading to a ‘winner’.

Step 1. Use the list on the ‘Human Needs’ Handout.

Step 2. Transfer the needs on the list to the first column of a tournament prioritiser (like below). This

could be done on a white board or on individual sheets. These could be written up in random order by

pulling out of a hat.

Step 3. Students can begin the tournament prioritiser in small groups, pairs or as a whole class.

Debate and discuss which of the first two is more important. Once a decision is made place the winning

need into round two and move on to debating ‘needs’ 3 and 4 and so on. Once round 1. is complete

move on to round 2. Repeat the process until there is a clear winner.

loving service look like?

Resources Required:

Bible, Pippa’s Story, A Heart

for Mission

The third Mark of Mission is “to respond to human need by loving

service”. Responding with loving service can at mes be tricky. There are

mes when our response is not helpful or wanted because it addresses

our need more than that of the presenng need. Such as our need feel

we have solved a problem. Somemes people do not wished to be

helped in a parcular way because it removes their need for dignity and

self-determinaon. In all we do to respond we must remember that

loving service means puOng ourselves last.

Read: John 13.3-15

Washing feet was a common and necessary act of hospitality in a hot and

dusty environment, and would normally be done by a servant.

Simon Peter was reluctant to be on the receiving end of a generous act.

Why do you think this is so?

Why do some people – perhaps ourselves included – react against being

helped?

How might this inform our approach to ‘loving service’?

Read Pippa’s Story.

What surprised you about this?

Have you ever thought that somemes the way we help is more about us

than about the people we wish to help?

What could you do to avoid helping people in unhelpful ways.

While loving service can involve ‘doing’, it is also maRers how we offer

service.

From reading this story, what do you think might be the inspiraon and

movaon behind the health workers’ desire to offer loving service?

There is something very safe and open about how Naw Law La and Naw

Bwe Hser work – as friends without a sense of superiority. There is an

Pippa’s Story

In high school, I travelled to Tanzania as part of a school trip. $3000 bought us a week at an orphanage, a

half built library, and a few pickup soccer games, followed by a week long safari.

Our mission while at the orphanage was to build a library. Turns out that we, a group of highly educated

private boarding school students were so bad at the most basic construction work that each night the

men had to take down the structurally unsound bricks we had laid and rebuild the structure so that, when

we woke up in the morning, we would be unaware of our failure. It is likely that this was a daily ritual. Us

mixing cement and laying bricks for 6+ hours, them undoing our work after the sun set, re-laying the

bricks, and then acting as if nothing had happened so that the cycle could continue.

Basically, we failed at the sole purpose of our being there. It would have been more cost effective,

stimulative of the local economy, and efficient for the orphanage to take our money and hire locals to do

the work, but there we were trying to build straight walls without a level.
