*LENTEN LITANY Melany Crawford One: The wells in our lives are sometimes dry. All: There is always living water from the God of peace. One: Our rivers are wide and our journeys long. All: There is always living water from the God of hope. One: Whether our days have too much running, too much wandering, or even too much dust, the God of love

meets us and renews our dry spirits. Let us pray ...

*UNISON PRAYER

O God, thirsty we come to you. Faint, we lean on you. Meditating, we dwell in you. Wing-shadowed, we sing to you. Turn to us in our need with your abundant grace. Give us, as we worship, a blessing of your Spirit that we may share it with all we meet. Amen

*LIGHTING OF TWO DISCIPLES CANDLES

Each week of Lent we light two additional candles in remembrance of the twelve disciples who enthusiastically followed Jesus’ call. On Maundy Thursday the same twelve disciples’ candles will be extinguished to represent their desertion and betrayal.

This week we especially remember the disciples, Philip and Bartholomew.

God, for God made it, and the dry land, which God’s hands have formed. Cantor and Congregation One: O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! For God is our God,

and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Cantor and Congregation

READING FROM THE HEBREW SCRIPTURES (Chapel) Elaine A. Matthes (Sanctuary) Rev. Elizabeth B Johnson

One: God speaks fresh words from our holy history. All: We listen with our ears, minds, and spirits.

Exodus 17:1-7

From the wilderness of Sin the whole congregation of the Israelites journeyed by stages, as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. The people quarreled with Moses, and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the LORD?” But the people thirsted there for water; and the people complained against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and livestock with thirst?” So Moses cried out to the LORD, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.” The LORD said to Moses, “Go on ahead of the people, and take some of the elders of Israel with you; take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink.” Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. He called the place Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarreled and tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD among us or not?”

RESPONSE One: We give thanks for all who have shaped our scripture. All: May our lives witness to the heritage of faith.

*HYMN OF DEVOTION “God is My Shepherd” BROTHER JAMES’ AIR

READING FROM THE GOSPEL (Chapel) Rev. David W. Johnson (Sanctuary) Rev. Holly H. Adams

One: We read from a story we call the good news. All: We open our hearts to its message of love.

John 4:5-15

So he came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?” (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” The woman said to him, “Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?” Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.”

RESPONSE One: May these words guide us on our Lenten journey. All: May all our wandering find the path of hope.

SERMON “Meet Me at the Well” Rev. Dr. Anna V. Copeland

CONGREGATIONAL LIFE

ANNOUNCEMENTS...

March 12, 2020

Dear Community Church Members and Congregants,

We are closely monitoring the Coronavirus, and wanted you to be aware of what we are doing to keep ourselves safe during this time.

Keeping You Safe

The Moderator, Interim Senior Minister, Executive Committee, ministry team, and staff have collaboratively prepared ways to respond to the Coronavirus and to support safe worship, community, pastoral care, programming, mission, and outreach. As we gather new information, we may revise our protocols on a regular basis. However, here is a summary of our response at this time:

Cleaning Protocols

Hand sanitizers have been placed throughout the Community Church of Vero Beach campus, including at the entrance and exit of all meeting spaces.

Cleaning protocols have been revised, including use of a spray that traps bacteria, preventing transmission by touch from surfaces.

Worship

For the next two months, we will offer communion on the first Sunday of each month in the Chapel at 11:15 for those who wish to receive it. We will suspend serving communion during the regularly scheduled worship services to avoid contact through the passing of communion trays.

For the next two months, we invite you to prayerfully share your offering and pledges in specially marked baskets at the entrances of worship, rather than passing the plates during worship.

If your immune system is compromised, you may participate in worship through live stream video, available at www.ccovb.org, Facebook or by calling the Church Office and asking for an easy to access link. You may call the Church Office at 772.562.3633 for help accessing worship as needed.

Community Care

Hands folded and a slight bow may replace shaking hands. A touch on your upper arm may replace a hug. Information regarding prevention and care for those who may have been exposed to the virus is

available through the Indian River Emergency Operations Center (EOC) on their website at www.irces.com or their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/IndianRiverEOC or through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at www.cdc.gov.

What can you do?

Please wash your hands thoroughly for two minutes following physical contact with others. Use hand sanitizers. Recover at home when you have a cough or a fever. Contact one of our ministers or the Church if

you need assistance or pastoral care.

While we are all grappling with the challenges and anxieties that this virus has presented, please remember, God is with us each and every day. We will continue to keep you apprised of our efforts to keep our entire Church community safe.

We know not what the future will bring, but we will continue to do our very best to respond to this outbreak in a thoughtful and appropriate way.

Gods Peace,

Stephen M. Higgins Anna V. Copeland Church Moderator Interim Senior Minister

This week we’ll make stops at Gifford Youth Achievement Center, Shining Light Garden, United Against Poverty, and Habitat for Humanity. MISSION WATCH: REDLANDS CHRISTIAN MIGRANT ASSOCIATION. Back in the 1960’s, impoverished farmworkers in South Florida had no alternative but to take their young children into the fields. A toddler had drowned in an irrigation pit. Others had died under farm machinery. Most spent long days exposed to broiling sun, pesticides, insects, and snakes. So a village of Mennonites near Homestead’s Redlands labor camp opened two child care centers, creating a safe haven. Surprisingly, most of the farmworkers stayed away. It turns out that the immigrants would entrust their babies only to caregivers from their own culture. That realization reshaped the futures of countless babies, a thousand or so mothers, and RCMA itself. After hiring immigrant caregivers, little ones filled RCMA childcare centers to capacity; and mothers were no longer isolated in the fields, but instead launched new childcare careers. From the two initial childcare centers, RCMA has grown to 71 centers in 21 Florida counties. All serve the rural poor, and most serve the children of Hispanic immigrants. Community Church mission dollars help educate and care for migrant children.

ADULT EDUCATION

COMMUNITY@COMMUNITY: To be determined. Please watch the Church website, Facebook page, or call the Church Office.

ELLA DODD LECTURES: This year our Ella Dodd Lectures will be given by Rev. Wesley Granberg-Michaelson. Rev. Michaelson is the former General Secretary of the Reformed Church in America and a founding managing editor of Sojourners magazine. His talks at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. will focus around his book, Future Faith: Ten Challenges Reshaping Christianity in the 21st Century; a look at how the winds of change blowing through global Christian faith are reshaping the practice of Christianity today. Due to travel restrictions these lectures will be rescheduled.
