The Tuscan TrilogyThe Hills of Tuscany, A Vineyard in Tuscany, and The Wisdom of Tuscany
Nearing a million copies in print, the three memoirs of the Máté family building a dream life in sun-
drenched Tuscany have entranced readers with their witty, poignant, and poetically personal accounts. The first book covers their new town, the neighbors, and of course food and wine; the second, restoring an abandoned thirteenth-century friary and starting a now world-renowned wine estate; the third, the indispensable life lessons they learned along the way. The Mátés’ story will inspire us all.
“Charming, lively. . . . Titanic in appeal.”—Washington Post
“Will delight the senses and rekindle anyone’s sense of adventure.”—Martha Stewart Radio
“Muscular prose . . . like Paul Bunyan on a Tuscan holiday.”—The New Yorker
“Made to order for an open-minded American traveler.”—Rick Steves
“Readers share a feeling of accomplishment and pride when their Syrah is voted ‘Italian Red Wine of the Year.’ ”—New York Times

Sea of lost DreamsA Dugger/Nello Novel
It’s 1921 Mexico. Ne’er-do-well sea captain Dugger and his sardonic friend Nello break out of jail and set sail for a new
beginning in Tahiti. Aboard are two mysterious passengers: a beautiful escapee from an Irish convent, searching for her twin brother; and a French master spy, hunting the leader of an anticolonial rebellion. But both are searching for more than they admit to—both have enormous secrets of the heart. After a hurricane-battered sea voyage, Gauguin’s beguiling Tahitian daughter pilots them through a mountainous jungle of recent infanticide and cannibalism. Aiding the rebels, they provoke the French navy’s unleashed revenge in a breathtak-ing chase through violent black squalls and treacherous reefs. Friendship, love, loyalty, and faith are in a crucible. The exhila-rating quest unravels amid the uprising of a doomed culture and the startling convergence of the characters’ destinies.

Chasing the DevilA Journey Through Sub-Saharan Africa in the Footsteps of Graham Greene
Of all the anarchic and war-torn African nations, none is more forbidding than Liberia, the land that nurtured
child soldiers, the violent trade in “blood diamonds,” even ritual murder. Graham Greene, in search of extreme adven-ture, ventured through its dense jungles to write the travel classic Journey Without Maps; three-quarters of a century later, Tim Butcher decided to follow Greene’s footsteps, only to find the path even more ominous and overgrown than in his predecessor’s day. Among the devils he encounters are masked sorcerers whose magical powers depend on canni-balism and missionaries long forgotten in the hinterland he traverses. Butcher, a former African correspondent for the London Telegraph and author of Blood River, his best-selling account of a dramatic journey through the Congo, has pro-duced in this thrilling sequel a book that The Independent hails as “fascinating, harrowing, and eventful.”
TIM BuTCHeR is an award-winning journalist and best-selling author. His first book, Blood River, was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize. He lives in Cape Town, South Africa.

Stolen MasterpieceThe Secret Story of a Painting in World War II
On a June day in 1944, a Nazi agent entered a warehouse on the outskirts of Amsterdam. Inside he discovered the
hidden art collection of a Jewish family. Among the paint-ings was a vivid seascape of children playing on a shore by the great German-Jewish impressionist Max Liebermann. The Nazi agent confiscated the painting, and its Jewish owners never saw it again. Today it hangs on the walls of a state museum in Munich. Stolen Masterpiece is the remarkable story of how it got there. Irrational hatred wasn’t the only cause of the Holocaust; the looting of Jewish property was a powerful motive that has been largely unexplored. In this astonishing narrative, crowded with unscrupulous art deal-ers, thieves, and—in all likelihood—the Nazi who arrested Anne Frank, the greatest crime in human history is made real through the fate of one of its artifacts.
A. M. HOROWITz is a specialist in the Nazis’ looting of art. A recipient of a Silver Key from the National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, she also holds an MFA from Goucher College. She lives in New Jersey.

Meyer Schapiro
Modern Art19th and 20th Centuries
RevISeD eDITION
Considered the master of the essay, Meyer Schapiro approached scholarship with a great deal of imaginative
historical perception, as well as an “unashamed passion for the works of art before him,” rendering his writings highly engaging and appealing to a broad range of readers.
A rich diversity of writing can be found within this collection, which offers studies of individual artists (Cézanne, Picasso, Mondrian, and Seurat) as well as essays on the reception and social meanings of modern art. Yet, even in his most aesthetic analyses, Schapiro never lost sight of the heroic efforts of the individual artists and of the cultural contexts in which their works were made and received.
Modern Art won the National Book Critics Circle Award (1978) and the Mitchell Prize for Art History (1979) and was a nominee for a National Book Award (1979).
MeYeR SCHAPIRO (1904–1996) was a prolific art historian, critic, and teacher. His notable titles include Romanesque Art, The Unity of Picasso’s Art, and Theory and Philosophy of Art. ADRIeNNe BAxTeR BeLL is an assistant professor of art history at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City.

“Remarkable life.”—New York Times
“Breathing fire.”—Economist
Along the ancient Silk Road where Europe, Asia, and Russia converge, stands the four-thousand-year-old homeland of a peaceful people: the Uyghurs. Their culture is filled with music, dance, family, and love of tradition passed down by storytelling through the ages.
For millennia they have survived clashes in the shadows of China, Russia, and Central Asia. Rebiya Kadeer’s courage, intellect, morality, and sacrifice give hope to the nearly eleven million Uyghurs worldwide on whose behalf she speaks as an indomitable world leader for the freedom of her people and the sovereignty of her nation.
Her life story is one of legend: as a refugee child, as a poor housewife, as a multimillionaire, as a high official in China’s National People’s Congress, as a political prisoner in solitary confinement for two of nearly six years, and now as a political dissident living in Washington, DC, exiled from her own land.
ReBIYA KADeeR is the president of the World Uyghur Congress and the Uyghur American Association. She is devoted to the principles of nonviolence. Recognized as an unofficial head of state, she regularly meets with world leaders.

Silk RoadMonks, Warriors & MerchantsuPDATeD eDITION
Luce Boulnois has poured a lifetime of prodigious, passion-ate scholarship into this seminal book. She explores the
encounter between East and West across the vast continental expanse that separates the Mediterranean world from the Chinese one. She unravels in a clear and compelling way the complex threads that weave the history of great overland trade routes, which allowed the transmission of ideas and beliefs, techniques and works of art, helping to shape the civilizations that flourished along the way. She loves silk, its history, and all its paths to Europe. But the importance of Central Asia is not just a thing of the past, and the author discusses its significance in the modern world in cultural and geopolitical terms, including the implications of the most recent events taking place there.
For the armchair traveler or the adventurous trail blazer, this “pièce de résistance” of Silk Road literature is guaranteed to satisfy.
World-renowned French historian LuCe BOuLNOIS (deceased) researched Chinese and Russian archives to unravel the Silk Road’s mysteries. Her timeless account is supplemented with current travel advice by BRADLeY MAYHeW, a Montana-based author of acclaimed Silk Road guidebooks and a veteran traveler.

The Girl in the MirrorA Novel
Lizzie McLane, the adopted poet-heroine of the widely acclaimed The Secret of Me, is now a high school senior,
excited about her future: meeting boys, college, and finally finding her birthmother. Then, on the day a letter from her adoption agency arrives, her adoptive father unexpectedly dies. Lizzie, lost in grief, turns to alcohol and the wrong kind of friends, and her life begins to spiral out of control. Loved ones try to help, but only in her poems and journals can Lizzie make sense of the hurt and her relentless curiosity about her birthmother.
I looked in the mirror . . . Who was that girl staring at me, blood on her blouse, black under her swollen eyes? I don’t know you, I said out loud. I don’t know you, she said back.
The Girl in the Mirror is a story about love and identity—brave, vulnerable, and compelling.
MeG KeARNeY is the author of The Secret of Me, for young adults. She teaches at Pine Manor College and lives in New Ipswich, New Hampshire.

The AnswerWhy Only Mini Nuclear Power Plants Can Save the World
Reese Palley argues that wind, solar, and hydroelectric power—all of which have large CO2-emitting footprints—
are not the answer needed to make meaningful changes in our disastrous warming trend. Nor, for both economic and political reasons, can large nuclear power plants be built in time.
The usual response to looming disaster is to throw ever-larger bulwarks into the mix, but the central theme of this book argues that we can only respond fast enough by radically reducing the scale of nuclear plants. The only sensible answer, which the author backs up with exhaustive research, is the construction and deployment of container-sized nuclear gen-erators distributed throughout the world, producing clean energy at the local level, getting us off the worst of our fossil-fuel gluttony within a decade.
ReeSe PALLeY is a polymath whose recent books include Concrete: A Seven-Thousand-Year History and Wooden Ships & Iron Men: The Art of Thomas Hoyne. He lives in Philadelphia.

Leonard Freed
Leonard Freed: The ItalianseSSAY BY MICHAeL MILLeR
Early in his long career, photographer Leonard Freed discovered Little Italy in New York City and
became enchanted with Italians. From then until his death in 2006 he made countless trips to Italy, where he produced some of the most memorable images of the people in their environment. He captured the joys of love, childhood, marriage, and the celebration of family and food. Freed’s Italians revel in the poetry of everyday life. Tom Armstrong
A Singular VisionArchitecture Art Landscape
After a fire destroyed his colonial revival house on Fisher’s Island, Tom Armstrong and his wife
commissioned Thomas Phifer and Partners to design a spectacular modernist steel and glass house on the same site, fulfilling Mr. Armstrong’s dream of living in a garden surrounded by art. Beginning with the first house, this book takes us through the fire, the selection of an architect, the building of the new house, and the acquisition of furnishings and art. Throughout we encounter designs and artwork by such notables as Marcel Breuer, Frank Gehry, Mies van der Rohe, Eero Sarrinen, Mark di Suvero, Isamu Noguchi, Betty Woodman, Alfred Leslie, Leon Polk Smith, Terry Winters, and a host of others. We also become privy to the thinking of an inventive gar-dener whose meticulous planning has resulted in an extraordinary setting for architecture and art and is open to the public during the summer months.
TOM ARMSTRONG, the former director of the Whitney Museum of American Art (and three other art museums), is the chairman of the Garden Conservancy. He lives in New York City and Fisher’s Island.
