CORRELATION OF PSYCHO SOCIAL WORK FACTORS TOWARD WORK STRESS AND MUSCULOSCELETAL SYMPTOMS AT WORKERS USING COMPUTER IN BOSOWA RESOURCES GROUP MAKASSAR

ABSTRACT

Introduction: One of under concerned issue is psychosocial factors in work environment. Psychosocial work factors affect stress management of workers. Negative interaction between work condition with human factors or workers can lead to emotional impairment, behavioral problem, and neurohormonal and biochemistry changes, or even risk of ill mentally and psychologically. Physically, consequences of this condition are fatigue, pain in some parts of body like neck, shoulder, and back pain, referred to as musculoskeletal symptoms. Computer users work in general seemed characterized by repetitive movements, which may be a risk factor for musculoskeletal symptoms. Method: This research is designed with cross sectional method, where sample and population are workers that had worked at Bosowa resources Makassar for at least one year , 2012 to 2013. Data regarding amount of workers using computer is obtained from Bosowa Resources data, and primary data is obtained from workers by using questionnaire. Psychosocial work factors is measured by question whether respondents experience demand of express work, excess work demand, stacked unfinished work, tight work deadline, dependency to supervisor, dependency to work colleague, contact with unfriendly costumers, deficient time for rest, broken computer, slow response computer, and difficulty to focus. Work stress is measured by fatigue, muscle stress particularly neck, headache, palpitation, insomnia, gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea or constipation, skin impairment, depression, irritable, and anxiety. Musculoskeletal symptoms measured by presence of tingling, pain, numbness, pin and needle sensation at their parts of body (hind head, arm, feet, shoulder, forearm, and back). Collected data is analyzed using SPSS 16.0Result: Total obtained sample is 31 respondents. For psychosocial work factors: 31 respondents experience demand of express work, 27 respondents experience excess work demand, 14 respondent experience stacked unfinished work, 27 respondents experience tight work deadline, dependency to supervisor experienced by 11 respondents, dependency to work colleague experienced by 10 respondents, contact with unfriendly costumers is experienced by 9 respondents, deficient time for rest is experienced by 12 respondents, broken computer experienced by 3 respondents, slow response computer experienced by 12 respondents, and difficulty to focus experienced by 12 respondents.
