Information System of the Biography and Selected 1 - 1 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Problem
The study of information systems originated as a sub-discipline of
computer science, in an attempt to understand and rationalize the
management of technology within organizations. It has matured into a
major field of management, which is increasingly being emphasized as an
important area of research in management studies, and is taught by all
major universities and business schools around the world. [WIKI2008]
An Information System (IS) is the system of persons, data records
and activities that process the data and information in a given
organization, including manual or automated processes. Usually, the term
is used erroneously as a synonym for computer-based information
systems, which is only the Information Technology component of an
Information System. The computer-based Information System is a field of
study for Information Technology (IT); however, this should hardly be
treated apart from the bigger Information System that they are always
involved in. [WIKI2008]
Learning Theory, a common definition of learning is a process that
brings together cognitive, emotional, and enviromental influences and
experiences for acquiring, enhancing, or making changes in one's
knowledge, skills, values, and world views (Illeris,2000;Ormorod, 1995).
Information System of the Biography and Selected 1 - 2 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
Learning as a process focuses in what happens when the learning takes
place. Explanations of what happens are called learning theories. A
learning theory is an attempt to describe how people and animals learn,
thereby helping us understand the inherently complex process of learning.
Learning theories have two chief values according to Hill(2002). One is in
providing us with vocabulary and a conceptual framework for interpreting
the examples of learning that we observe. The other is in suggesting where
to look for solutions to practical problems. The theories do not give us
solutions, but they do direct our attention to those variables that are crucial
in finding solutions. [WIKI2008]
Behavorism as a theory was most developed by B. F. Skinner. It
loosely includes the work of such people as Thorndike, Tolman, Guthrie,
and Hull. What characterizes these investigators is their underlying
assumptions about the process of learning. In essence, three basic
assumptions are held to be true. First, learning is manifested by a change
in behavior. Second, the environment shapes behavior. And third the
principles of contiguity (how close in time two events must be for a bond
to be performed ) and reinforcement (any means of increasing the
likelihood that an event will be repeated ) are central to explaining the
learning process. For behaviorism, learning is the acquisition of new
behavior through conditioning. [WIKI2008]
Information System of the Biography and Selected 1 - 3 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
Constructivism views learning as a process in which the learner
actively constructs or builds new ideas or concepts based upon current and
past knowledge. In other words, "learning involves constructing one's own
knowledge from one's own experiences." Constructivist learning,
therefore, is a very personal endeavor, whereby internalized concepts,
rules, and general principles may consequently be applied in a practical
real-world context. This is also known as social constructivism (see social
constructivism). Social constructivists posits that knowledge is constructed
when individuals engage socially in talk and activity about shared
problems or tasks. Learning is seen as the process by which individuals
are introduced to a culture by more skilled members"(Driver et al., 1994)
Constructivism itself has many variations, such as Active learning,
discovery learning, and knowledge building. Regardless of the variety,
constructivism promotes a student's free exploration within a given
framework or structure. The teacher acts as a facilitator who encourages
students to discover principles for themselves and to construct knowledge
by working to solve realistic problems. Aspects of constructivism can be
found in self-directed learning, transformational learning, experiential
learning, situated cognition, and reflective practice. [WIKI2008]
Multimedia learning is the common name used to describe a the
“Cognitive theory of Multimedia learning” (Mayer and Moreno, 1998;
Information System of the Biography and Selected 1 - 4 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
Moreno and Mayer, 1999; Mayer, 2001). This theory encompasses several
principles of learning with multimedia. [WIKI2008]
“JPRIZAL: The Life and Works of Jose Rizal” is one of the
courses offered by STI College Calamba for students taking up Bachelor’s
Degree courses. Through the years, instructors used the same techniques
and teaching materials as their references.
Class discussion, books, manuals or course wares, quizzes or
comprehension checks are the manifestation of these techniques. Written
materials such as books are the main material in teaching the lesson.
Normally, the school is providing pre-determined acetates and courseware
to guide the instructor. Both of these are school property. Therefore,
students are not authorized to borrow them.
In addition, manuals and textbooks present inadequate information.
Thus, students would be forced to locate other books which may offer
more information.
For example, coming from the foil in one of the lectures in the
course, Systems Analysis and Design, “Attributes contain qualities and
capabilities not found in the individual elements.” The sentence is
incorrect; it should be “Attributes contain qualities and capabilities found
in the individual elements.” The word “not” should be eliminated.
Another example is, coming from the foil in one of the lectures in
the course, Computer Networks, “POTS…permits voice conversation and
Information System of the Biography and Selected 1 - 5 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
digital transmission with the aid of a Modem. Also referred to as PSTN or
Public Switched Telephone Network. ”. The acronym for POTS was not
defined while the acronym for PSTN was determined. What of for
example, the instructor does not know the acronym for POTS and a certain
student asked for its acronym? This is an example of inadequate
information.
Students are loaded with different researches. Like for example, a
certain student wants to search about Jose Rizal, he or she has two main
options: Internet Research or Library Research. Internet research is indeed
the fastest way to get instant researches while the Library Research is
more of time-consuming and laborious.
Information System of the Biography and Selected Literary
Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba is a proposed
system software that will encapsulate Jose Rizal’s life and selected literary
works. It will utilize multiple media types and animations to make
learning and teaching entertaining and fun. Its main objective is to design
and develop an Information System pertaining to Jose Rizal’s life and
selected literary works that would serve as an alternative tool in teaching
the course, “JPRIZAL: The Life and Works of Jose Rizal”. The system
includes the following: BIOGRAPHY Section, which will narrate Jose
Rizal’s personal background; LITERARY COMPOSITIONS Section,
which will categorize Jose Rizal’s literary works into five areas: Novel,
Essay, Articles, Books and Poems; GALLERY Section, which will display
Information System of the Biography and Selected 1 - 6 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
the multiple media presented in the previous sections; INTERACTIVITY
Section, which will check the comprehension of the user; GLOSSARY
Section, which will list all the terminologies presented in the previous
sections and its definition; SEARCH FUNCTION Section, which will
enable the user to search easily their desired topic; ABOUT US Section,
which will display the proponents’ identification and the system’s
copyright.
The system is mainly designed for the students and faculty of STI
College Calamba. The existing system uses a manual way of teaching
which utilizes courseware, manuals, handouts, textbooks, etc.; it is proven
effective but may also incur deficiencies.
Through the utilization of the proposed system, those problems
encountered using the existing system could be solved. Instructors will
stop worrying about the possibly incorrect and inadequate information
presented by manuals, because the proposed system will ensure the users
the integrity of the information to be presented. Students will not need to
look for several references, thus consuming less time in research about
Jose Rizal’s life and works. Via the proposed system, it will be more
convenient for the students to search in an all-in-one module that will
provide the information they needed. (See Chapter 2 Section 2.2.3)
Information System of the Biography and Selected 1 - 7 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
1.2 Overview of the Current State of Technology
A thesis entitled, “Ugnayang Tulong sa Pilipinas Employees
Information System” by Runilo Dimaculangan and Sherry Aguete of STI
College Calamba last October 2001, aimed for the development of a
computerized employee information system for Ugnayang Tulong sa
Pilipinas Foundation Inc. The said institution acts as the Philippine
Chapter of the Foundation for Aid of the Philippines (FAPI). It aims to
educate and harness the growing awareness and appreciation among
Filipinos here and abroad of their strengths, capabilities and resources
through their projects such as community based programs. With the
computerization of the foundation’s employees’ information system, tasks
that require access to file concerning employees’ personal information get
done much faster and easier with the use of a computerized database.
[DIMA2001].
The proposed system aims to provide an Information System about
Jose Rizal’s life and selected literary works for STI College Calamba. It
will serve as a reference material for students in their research. Since it is
computerized, it will quicken the research. Students will not need to
rewrite or photocopy what is written on textbooks; they can simply copy
the information directly into any word processing program.
Information System of the Biography and Selected 1 - 8 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
The February 2005 thesis made by Abdul Johary L Bandrang and
his teammates of STI College Calamba, entitled “Computer Aided
Instruction in Biology”, was designed and developed for the nursing
students, researchers and those people who are related in the field of
Biology in order to provide computerized lessons that makes learning fun
and convenient. The study uses computer for tutorial sequences in
presenting drills and exercises. It also provides attractive features like
colorful graphics and interactive interface. [BAND2005]
The proposed system provides computerized information system
regarding Jose Rizal’s life and selected literary works. Like a Computer
Aided Instruction (CAI), the proposed system is designed for information
dissemination. It will also utilize interactivities to ease the user’s boredom.
In the thesis made by Michael A. Brobio and his group mates last
March 2003 of STI College Calamba entitled, “Computer Aided
Instruction of the Anatomy of the Human Body”, the developers aimed to
have and promote more comprehensive and easy to understand CAI in the
delivery of lectures in the anatomy of the human body. The conventional
manner of teaching is proven effective but tedious, time consuming and
sometimes the discussion is too fast that it is not easy for students to
comprehend and understand. [BROB2008]
The proposed system will also be concerned with the promotion of
Information Systems to be utilized in teaching and researching. It also
Information System of the Biography and Selected 1 - 9 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
addresses the problems encountered by this system like for example, the
tediousness brought by the conventional manner of teaching. Through the
incorporation of images, sound clips, video clips and animations, this
could be lessened.
1.3 Project Rationale
The system entitled, Information System of the Biography and
Selected Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
will be of great significance to the following:
JPRIZAL Instructors
The system will serve as an alternative tool for teaching the
course, “JPRIZAL: The Life and Works of Jose Rizal”. Instructors
could not anymore make use of printed manuals to support their
discussion but they can make use of the system itself in presenting
the lesson. In addition, quizzes are provided by the system. It is not
compulsory which means that the user could take the quiz whether
or not he or she did not read the topics.
Students
Students could make use of the system for their class
discussions and future researches. Class discussion, in a way that
Information System of the Biography and Selected 1 - 10 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
they can make an advance reading so that by the time it is being
discussed, they can participate. Future researches, in a way that the
system could serve as a reference material for their future
researches about Jose Rizal.
Future Researchers
The system is not only limited to the students enrolled in
the course, JPRIZAL but also to other students who have
researches and are interested about Jose Rizal.
STI College Calamba
The system will prove that the school is capable of
producing competent and adept students in the field of Information
and Communications Technology.
The Proponents
The Information System will serve as the culmination of
the proponents’ study all throughout freshman years up to senior
ones. Not only in programming skills are the proponents tested but
also in their oral and written communications skills. Moreover,
group collaboration and teamwork will be developed all
throughout the development of the system.
CHAPTER 2
Information System of the Biography and Selected 2 - 1 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
2.0 PROJECT DESCRIPTION
2.1 Problem Statement
How to design, develop, and implement an Information System
that will encapsulate Jose Rizal’s biography and selected literary
compositions which will serve as a supplementary tool to assist the
teachers and students in teaching and learning the course, “JPRIZAL: The
Life and Works of Jose Rizal”?
Typically, teaching and learning about a certain person is not only
focused on his personal background but also on other aspects, especially
if you are dealing with prominent personalities. Rizal is the Philippine
National Hero; in addition to his biography, his literary compositions
must be explored as well. Thus, an all-in-one system as a supplementary
tool to teaching and learning the course, JPRIZAL, will be an effective
material.
Specifically, the study aims to address the following:
• How to design a module that will make learning about Jose Rizal’s
life and selected literary works more entertaining and enjoyable?
Information System of the Biography and Selected 2 - 2 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
According to the survey conducted, 61% of the respondents agreed
that the factors that caught their attention most are the multiple media
types such as images, sounds and videos. The proponents concluded that
with that multimedia packaged in a system, it will be interesting for the
students at the same time educational.
• How to produce a module that will promote Jose Rizal’s biography
and literary compositions?
Books are intended for information dissemination. These printed
materials make promotion and distribution of information possible. At
present, computers can do the same thing as books. If books have Mr.
Webster, computers have Online and Offline dictionaries; if books have
Collier Encyclopedia, computers have Yahoo! News and MSN News; if
books have “Jose Rizal: Life, Works and Writings of a Genius, Writer,
Scientist and national Hero”, computers have “Information System of the
Biography and the Selected literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI
College Calamba”. Books have the same level as computers. They only
differ in the manner of presentation. Books bear small characters on it
with black and white (sometimes) colorful images. The same with
computers but have additional features like the incorporation of multiple
media types such as text, images, sound and video clips wherein books
Information System of the Biography and Selected 2 - 3 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
cannot support. Furthermore, manual books like electronic computers
have the same level of information promotion and distribution.
• How to design a module that will be beneficial to the students and
faculty of STI College Calamba?
“JPRIZAL: The Life and Works of Jose Rizal” is one of the
courses being offered for the students taking up Bachelor’s Degree
courses.
For instructors, the goal is to disseminate information to their
students. To perform this effectively, instructors use various approaches to
present a particular topic. Normally, instructors would present a certain
topic using the traditional way. Talking in front, discussing everything in
class, giving quizzes after the discussion, etc. are the manifestations of
being traditional. It is therefore not surprising if students would lose
interest in listening. This is one of the major problems of instructors: how
to keep their students’ attention and interest.
For the students, it is important to understand the lesson well
enough for them to pass the subject. This is done through the aid of their
instructors. If the instructors use a new innovation, students will surely be
interested and attentive in learning the subject.
Information System of the Biography and Selected 2 - 4 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
2.2 Proposed Research Project
2.2.1 General Objective
The main objective of this project is to design, develop and
implement an Information System pertaining to Jose Rizal’s life
and selected literary works which is for the students and faculty of
STI College Calamba that would serve as a supplementary tool in
teaching and learning the course, JPRIZAL: The Life and Works
of Jose Rizal.
The proposed system will serve as a supplementary tool for
teaching and learning the course, JPRIZAL. In order to improve
the manner of teaching, an automated learning system will be
designed. Unlike the traditional way, it will be entertaining and
enjoyable teaching and learning JPRIZAL since it will be
presented in an interactive manner by the use of this system.
Faculty, most especially students of STI College Calamba will
benefit from it; since, it will be more convenient for them teaching
and learning the subject.
Information System of the Biography and Selected 2 - 5 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
2.2.2 Specific Objectives
Specifically, the proponents aim for the following:
• To design a module that will make learning about Jose
Rizal’s biography and selected literary compositions more
entertaining and enjoyable through the incorporation of multimedia
in the system.
From the survey, 28% of the respondents agreed that they
found the reading materials entertaining and enjoyable. By
incorporating multiple media types such as wonderful images,
precise documents, audible sound clips, clear video clips, well-
done animations, etc., it will be an attractive and a catchy one.
Thus, boredom of the user can be lessened.
• To produce a module that will promote Jose Rizal’s
biography and selected literary compositions.
Jose Rizal is a prominent person making him popular. Sad
to state, nowadays, students would define him as the Philippine
National Hero only. Other than that, like major and minor details
are sometimes forgotten. Even though there are books that provide
Information System of the Biography and Selected 2 - 6 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
necessary and basic information, still it is inadequate. Another
option is by the use of an Information System that will promote
Jose Rizal’s life and selected works in a more convenient way than
textbooks. By the use of the system, it will be easy for students and
the instructors to gather information in computer related form.
Besides, by means of size, textbooks are bulky. Unlike software
that could be place in a portable size Flash Drives or Compact
Disks which you can access anytime you want.
• To design an educational module about the course
JPRIZAL, for the students and faculty of STI College Calamba.
The system will serve as a supplementary tool in teaching
the course JPRIZAL. The reference materials, techniques or
strategies utilized by the instructors were consolidated in an
interactive manner. The manner on how instructors present their
lessons will also be applied like in class discussions. But through
the aid of the system, it is not anymore monotonous and dull,
rather interactive and entertaining. In addition to, the system is not
only limited to the students taking JPRIZAL but also to the future
researchers as well.
Information System of the Biography and Selected 2 - 7 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
2.2.3 Scope and Limitation
The following will be the scope of the system:
1. Incorporation of multimedia and animations in the system
For the proposed system to be an attractive and a catchy
one, the proponents will include multiple media types such as
images, text, video clips.
2. The textbook that will be utilized by the proponents is
“Rizal (Without the Overcoat)” by Ambeth Ocampo.
3. The following will be the reference books that will be
utilized by the proponents. These will serve as additional
reference materials wherein the proponents could get
additional information in it.
a. Jose P. Rizal (Inspirasyon sa Bagong Milenyo) by
Carmelita S. Lorenzo, et. al
b. Rizal’s Boyhood by Isidro Panlasigui
c. Rizal’s Life, Works and Writings by Capino Gonzales
Pineda
d. Jose Rizal’s Immortal Legacy by Florencio Rivera
Information System of the Biography and Selected 2 - 8 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
e. Jose Rizal (Pinakadakilang Bayaning Pilipino) Gabay
sa Kursong Rizal by Luisito San Valentin and Reynaldo
Aguilar
f. Jose Rizal (Buhay, Mga Gawa at mga Sinulat ng Isang
Henyo, Manunulat, Siyentipiko at Pambansang Bayani)
by Gregorio F. Zaide and Sonia M. Zaide
4. File Maintenance
Transaction such as adding, opening, creating, saving and
printing of information is included in the system. Only the
authorized personnel are allowed to add and update necessary
information.
5. Topics
a. BIOGRAPHY
Jose Rizal’s background would be presented in this
section. It is subdivided into five categories: Personal
Background, Childhood Years, Exploration, Love Life, and
Farewell Years. Rizal’s life will be divided according to the
five areas. Clicking those topic links will load another
screen that is composed of the topics included in the main
menus. Images will support the details.
Information System of the Biography and Selected 2 - 9 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
b. LITERARY COMPOSITIONS
Jose Rizal’s selected literary works will be
categorized into five areas: Novels, Essays, Articles, Books
and Poems.
6. Modules
a. GALLERY
Images and Video Clips are the sections of this
page. The images, sound clips and video clips presented in
the “Biography” and “Literary Compositions” sections will
be exhibited in this area. A brief description about the
specific media will also be displayed to support it.
b. INTERACTIVITY
This part will serve as the comprehension check up
of the system. The quiz will be subdivided into three areas:
Life, Works and Combination are the main categories.
Users will have a choice in taking the quiz; they can focus
in one area only. Moreover, this section is optional. Thus,
the user has the option to take it or not.
Information System of the Biography and Selected 2 - 10 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
c. GLOSSARY
This will serve as the electronic dictionary of the
system. Like a dictionary, it will list down alphabetically
all the terminologies and its definition that were discussed
in the Biography and Literary Compositions sections.
d. SEARCH ENGINE
In order to quicken the search for a particular topic,
the system will utilize a search engine wherein the user
could just type a word and after it has been inputted, the
system will generate a list of topics related to the keyword.
This feature will also include an “advanced search” option
wherein the user could refine the search by manipulating
the Biography, Works, Pictures, Video or Documents Field.
e. SECURITY
There will be two user levels: Administrator and
Guest. The former has the full power to manipulate the
system while the latter has limited capabilities such as
viewing the system only. Transactions such as File
Maintaining and User Maintaining is prohibited; only the
Administrator can perform it.
Information System of the Biography and Selected 2 - 11 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
7. Generation of Reports
The system will be generating reports monthly regarding
the Administrator’s Maintenance. It will display in the report how
many literary compositions were added and updated.
The following will be the limitations of the system:
1. In the Gallery Section, some images were presented in
black and white since those were scanned from the books;
thus, some may appear unclear. However, other images
were uploaded from different references which are colored.
2. In the Interactivity Section, tracking of user’s progress
report will not be included. Meaning, the system will not
monitor the user’s assessment or performance regarding
the topics.
2.2.4 Methodology
In order to make up a fully functional and complete system,
there should be steps or guidelines that must be followed. The
proponents will use the Waterfall or the Systems Development Life
Cycle (SDLC) Model as a framework in developing the system. It
describes how the information progresses from the time of its
Information System of the Biography and Selected 2 - 12 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
conception until its utilization. The good thing about the model is that
you can go back to the previous phases if there is additional
information. Since it is a cycle, the implementation and utilization
process just iterates. The proponents will utilize SDLC since it is best
suitable in developing and implementing the system.
The SDLC Model is defined by the US Department of Justice
as a software development process, although it is also a distinct
process independent of software or other information technology
considerations. It is used by a system analyst to develop an
information system including requirements, validation, training, and
user ownership through investigation, analysis, design,
implementation, and maintenance. SDLC is also known as Information
Systems Development or Application Development. Following the
SDLC should result in a high quality system that meets or exceeds
customer expectations, within time and cost estimates, works
effectively in the current and planned information technology
infrastructure, and is cheap to maintain and cost-effective to enhance.

Planning Phase
Planning Phase is the first step of the cycle. It is here where
the plans for creating an information system were established.
The proponents will identify what kind of system to be
developed and it is an Information System of the Life and Selected
Literary Works of Jose Rizal. The scope and limitations of the system
will also be identified in this phase. Objectives will also be settled to
know the goals of the system.
Requirements Determination Phase
Requirements Determination Phase is also significant
because it is where the data gathering techniques are implemented
such as researches, survey, interview, observation, etc.
In order to determine the requirements of the system, the
proponents will conduct some data gathering techniques. Below are
the lists of activities:
Observation
Information System of the Biography and Selected 2 - 15 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
Through observation, the proponents will identify the
problem of the host company, which is STI College Calamba. The
proponents will observe the teaching strategy of the instructors in
teaching JPRIZAL also the reactions of the students will be kept.
Library and Internet Researches
Books and the Internet are good combination of research.
Since, one can fill up the missing of the other. The proponent will
make use of various books in inputting the information needed in
the system. Same with the Internet, which can provide a brief
description as summary of the information presented in books.
Interview
Observation is not enough, so the proponents will conduct
an interview with the professors of STI College Calamba who are
currently handling the subject. Interviews will also be conducted
with students who are currently taking up, as well as those who are
not, JPRIZAL, in order to compare the results. (See Appendix D)
Survey
The proponents conducted a survey in order to find out the
real world situation. The information that will be presented was all
based upon the survey’s findings. (See Appendix F)
Information System of the Biography and Selected 2 - 16 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
References such as courseware or manuals will be utilized by
the system in order to identify the topics to be discussed in the
subject. (See Appendix H)
Analysis Phase
During this phase, the requirements that will be gathered
by the proponents will be analyzed in order to come upon an initial
design of the system. The scope and limitations of the system will also
be analyzed. The proponents will ensure that the identified scope and
limitations are satisfied. The objective of the system will also be
analyzed for the proponents to identify if the system will satisfy the
requirements of the host company. (See Appendix K.1)
Design Phase
In this phase, the technical blue print of the system is
created. The proponents will design the technical architecture of the
system. Also, a preliminary design about the general capabilities of the
system will also be drafted. Finally, the proponents will decide what
kind of programming language to utilize and what kind of database
management system to use for storing information. (See Appendix K.2
and Appendix L.2)
Information System of the Biography and Selected 2 - 17 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
Implementation Phase
During this phase, the draft of the system will be coded.
The system will be tested and implemented in order to determine if it
complied with the system’s objectives. The system will be tested by
several users in order to collect feedbacks regarding the system. The
process will be repeated until the system meets the user’s specification
and requirements.
Maintenance Phase
Maintenance phase is the ongoing process of the system.
Keeping the system up to date with the changes in the information and
ensuring it meets the goals of the beneficiary by building a help desk
to support the system users. Poor design and specification of the
system will lead to high maintenance and upkeep. The system will
ensure the user that it will provide up-to-date information and user-
friendly environment.

3.0 PROJECT MANAGEMENT
3.1 Calendar of Activities
3.1.1 Description of Activities
Initially, the proponents planned a concrete topic. In order
to make it happen, several data gathering techniques were
executed. Library and Internet researches were very helpful in
conducting this study. Due to these, the proponents identified what
are those existing systems already; thus, eliminating duplication. In
the initial months, orientations with thesis adviser and coordinator
were held. It is then that there were several discussions regarding
the proposal title. Along the way, the proponents were already
drafting the initial chapters of the documentation. Various group
meetings and individual tasks were assigned, thus it is easy to
brainstorm the topic. Moreover, in the third month, chapter 1 and
other miscellaneous pages were drafted, reused and submitted.
These were made possible via interviews and surveys conducted.
At present, researches, group meetings, individual assignments,
communication with thesis coordinator and advisers are still on
going. In the future, the proponents will already draft the initial
designs of the system and of the databases. On or before July, the
proponents will have a 25% to 30% of the software already
working. The proponents also foresee that by the end of October
almost 50% to 70%of the project will be completed and by
December 2008, the system will be 100% operational and is for
testing already.

Appendix D.1. Transcript of Interview of the Selected STI Calamba’s Professors Name of Interviewee: Mr. Ricardo Negrillo Date: January 14, 2008 Location: Faculty Room
Set A Interviewer: How long have you been a teacher? Interviewee: I’ve been a teacher for STI around 5 year; all in all around 7 years. Interviewer: As a teacher, what are your ways in presenting your lesson to your
students? Interviewee: Usually, I teach using class discussions, explanations but then it is better
to present it using audio visual materials such as film showing, multimedia presentations, because the students get more interested. Thus, it lessens their boredom.
Interviewer: Do you think it is effective to your students? Interviewee: Yes it is, because they do not only focus to the board, to the handouts, but
also to the presentation itself. It is good if they’re seeing it using details or text but it is much better if at the same time they’re visualizing it using presentations. Technology is present there. I mean, if the students will see it with the use of technology, they are more convinced and eager to study.
Interviewer: At present, there are innovations on how to present information such as
PowerPoint presentations, Computer-Aided Instructions, Information Systems, etc. Have you tried those ways?
Interviewee: Yes I had. Here in school, I am using audio visual techniques such as film showing because it is better than handouts only. Those ways are better since you don’t have to write anymore instead, the information in there arranged per slides. Also, it would be good if it is supported by images.
Set B Interviewer: How long have you been teaching, JPRIZAL: The Life and Works of Jose
Rizal? Interviewee: I’ve been teaching JPRIZAL for almost 4 years. Meaning every semester I
have the course, JPRIZAL in my work load. Interviewer: During that period of time, what are your teaching strategies in presenting
the subject to your students?
Information System of the Biography and Selected D - 2 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
Interviewee: I am using the courseware that the library provided or prescribed by the school. I am also using other textbooks about Jose Rizal particularly Ambet Ocampo’s; I also use books written by Agoncillo and Zaide and other books written by famous Rizal biographers. I also utilize film showings particularly documentaries about Rizal like the one enacted by Cesar Montano.
Interviewer: Does the school provide necessary equipment for you? Interviewee: Here in school, what they have only a CD but those equipments I am using
are not present. I am still the one providing those materials. Interviewer: Thank you for your time Sir! Interviewee: You’re Welcome! _______________________ Interviewee’s Signature

Name of Interviewee: Mr. Leo Gelisan Date: January 14, 2008 Location: Faculty Room
Set A Interviewer: How long have you been a teacher? Interviewee: I’ve been in STI for almost 3 semesters, in teaching for almost 2 years. Interviewer: As a teacher, what are your ways in presenting your lesson to your
students? Interviewee: I open the discussion, here in our school, we are provided by coursewares
that were presented. For me, before I teach the lesson, I study it also beforehand. If I am not satisfied, I am doing a research but mostly class discussion. Moreover, I also assign reporting to students.
Interviewer: Do you think it is effective to your students? Interviewee: I think it is effective because when it comes to reporting, I can see that
there researches are long. Meaning they did not only use one resource material. When it comes to examinations, they are good. If there are failing students, they are limited. I am making a profile check; from there I can see that those students are the one who makes themselves fail. For example, I am assigning reports to them, they are not doing it.
Interviewer: At present, there are innovations on how to present information such as
PowerPoint presentations, Computer-Aided Instructions, Information Systems, etc. Have you tried those ways?
Interviewee: Yes, I’ve tried those ways already. For my students, I am letting them use the technology that they think will helpful to their reports and it is better because students have different types of learning; some by visual, some by audio, some by torching. It is better because they’re viewing the information they’re presenting. With the use of technology, it will be very helpful because students are more interested in the topic
Interviewer: Do you think that these innovations in teaching will make learning and
move forward entertaining? Interviewee: Students have different ways of learning. Some are by visual; auditory;
touching. Through those ways they get the idea easily. Those innovations will be very helpful to them because they get more curios to it. Due to that, they learn more because they did not only see it textually, but also visually. At the start of the semester, I’m telling my students beforehand that I do not know everything, that there are some things I do not know that they knew and vice versa. My students will learn from me and at the same time I will learn from them.
Information System of the Biography and Selected D - 4 Literary Compositions of Jose Rizal for STI College Calamba
Set B Interviewer: How long have you been teaching, JPRIZAL: The Life and Works of Jose
Rizal? Interviewee: I’ve only taught JP Rizal for 1 semester; only when Ma’am Grace gave it
to me. At first I don’t want to accept it because I’m afraid I cannot disseminate the information well. But during the rest of the semester, I am enjoying it. Some with my class; they are also enjoying. That semester was fun. As a person, you will not only realize that Rizal is a hero rather he is a human being.
Interviewer: During that period of time, what are your teaching strategies in presenting
the subject to your students? Interviewee: I’m using the acetate, courseware that was presided by the school. The
good thing is that, the modules being utilized whatever branch of STI is the same.
Interviewer: What do you do if the there are incorrect or inadequate information? Interviewee: As what I’ve said earlier, I studying it beforehand so that I would know
what I’m going to tackle. But there are times that I can’t browse through it. If that’s happening, I’m rectifying it already. But there are instances when my students aren’t satisfied, I’m learning it and on the other day, I’m trying to answer it.
Interviewer: Nowadays, do you think that providing a system about Jose Rizal’s life
and selected literary compositions will be an effective tool for information disseminations?!
Interviewee: Under the law, it is mandatory most especially for bachelor’s degree courses. The system will be of great help in information dissemination. Using computers, it will be more accessible since it will be another source material for students and teachers. Moreover, there are different software’s learning pertaining to other subjects like Math, Science, and English. Yours’ are different. It is really unique!

inevitable interruptions like for example; the schedule for holiday season was extended. Thus, the lecture was affected and prolonged. We are in a hurry to catch up those lectures.
Interviewer: In using that strategy, what is your reaction about it? Interviewee: Those ways are good but then the lectures were already outdated. Unlike
in other school which are advanced and futuristic Interviewer: At present, there are innovations on how to present information such as
PowerPoint presentations, Computer-Aided Instructions, Information Systems, etc. Have you tried those ways?
Interviewee: No, I haven’t tried those ways yet but I’ve seen the one made using PowerPoint presentation.
Interviewer: What are your initial reactions? Interviewee It is corny, because some were made using PowerPoint presentation, some
in Movie Maker. It will be better if they will use a more advance technique because PowerPoint are the same thing (nakakasawa na).
Interviewer: Do you think that using these innovations in teaching will make learning
more fun and entertaining? Interviewee: Yes, it will. I remembered one in my subject in PHILMAN; our instructor
told us that it will be better if there will be visual aids because we can understand more what is being discussed and at the same time the students’ attention will be caught. Those simple visual aids are already catchy, what more if computer-aided pa
