How to Negotiate Up
- to get your Needs met:
How to Diagnose Down:
- to get your team members Needs met:
In Learning Stage 1:
We are generally open to taking on something new and exciting.
At this stage our attitude is usually positive while our know-how is low.
We are usually feeling enthusiastic and eager to learn about this new and exciting project, task or hobby. We might also experience mixed emotions. Feelings of anxiety, nervousness and maybe procrastination are quite common, prior to and during this initial stage of learning.
At this time we need to be given clear, concise instructions by the “project leader” [i.e. someone who has extensive know-how and positive attitude about the project.] We need to be told specifically what to do.
We need Direction
In Learning Stage 2:
We now know that we don’t know what to do, because by now we have usually “jumped into the project at the deep end” only to realise that we are “sinking”. Whilst we have been told what to do, too often it didn’t make sense at the time.
We realise that we now need help to show us how to do it. We may feel overwhelmed – like we are drowning. Our self-talk is spiralling downwards in a sea of self-confusion and maybe disillusionment.
Our know-how might be on the rise but our attitude may plummet to the depths of despair. This may result in us “giving up” on the project altogether.
We need to either assert our need for help or be shown the way out of this dilemma. Either way, it is critical that we get our needs met or we cannot progress.
We need support
In Learning Stage 3:
As we move forward cautiously, learning to know, we feel a mix of positive and negative emotions.
Whilst we have acquired more know-how, we are aware it is not yet fully developed and therefore we may be feeling shaky, unsure and uncomfortable.
With continued support and encouragement we can progress to the next stage. We have observed the “project leader” successfully demonstrate how to complete the task.
We need the leader’s on-going encouragement and coaching, and our confidence slowly builds.
We need to practice
In Learning Stage 4:
Both our attitude and know-how are high, due to our efforts as well as the support of the leader. We are feeling on top, successful and in control of the situation.
We need to be trusted on the job, recognised for our improvement and to be acknowledged as a key contributor. If we don’t receive the recognition we believe we deserve, at Stage 4, our know-how will stay high, but our attitude may slide all the way back down to Stage 2.
Eventually we may lose our drive to progress, and we may decide to look elsewhere for a more fulfilling environment where our contribution will be recognised and rewarded.
We need recognition
In Learning Stage 5:
We are not just doing the job, we are now mastering it with confidence, commitment & motivation. We may also be learning how to develop, inspire and coach others. We feel as though we are now putting something back [helping others as we were helped] and adding value.
At Stage 5, we need to be given recognition, and maybe extra responsibility, further development and promotion. If we are further progressing towards leading others, then we will also need coaching and mentoring from a competent leader, who can develop our leadership skills.
It is critical that we keep updating their skills. Learning is a continual journey, not a destination, and a changing environment is the only thing that stays the same.
We may need new challenges
