Product Range
ThermostatsThe thermostat is an engine coolant temperature control valve
assembly that prevents circulation of coolant through the radiator
until a predetermined engine temperature is achieved. This allows the
engine to reach its operating temperature generally within the fi rst 10
minutes of operation. Upon reaching the predetermined temperature,
the thermostat opens and allows coolant to fl ow through the radiator.
There are various styles of thermostats including By-Pass, Non By-Pass,
Thermostat Housing Assemblies, High Flow Thermostats and
Thermostat inserts used in conjunction with original housing.
Thermostat GasketsThe thermostat gasket seals the water inlet or housing to the engine
cylinder head. There are basically two styles of thermostat gaskets,
either paper or rubber ‘O’ rings (sealing rings). Rubber sealing rings
are generally moulded. Some manufacturers use neither but rather a
liquid sealing compound between the two metal surfaces.
Radiator CapsThe function of the radiator cap is to regulate system pressure within
the cooling system and allow coolant to fl ow to the cooling system.
The radiator cap maintains pressure in the cooling system and raises
the boiling point of coolant. When the rated pressure is reached the
valve is raised off its radiator neck seat and releases coolant to the
overfl ow tube or expansion tank.
Cooling System Service ToolsTridon offers a selection of quality cooling system service tools to
assist in cooling system maintenance. The wide range of quality tools
ensures ease of radiator hose removal, replacement and cooling
system testing.
Packaging
ThermostatsTridon thermostats are available in user friendly blister packaging or boxed.
To assist with correct product selection an abbreviated application list is
supplied on the back of each blister pack. All products are barcoded.
For ordering boxed thermostats add ‘P’ to the end of the part number.
Note: Due to the size of certain thermostats boxed is only available.
Thermostat GasketsTridon thermostat gaskets are supplied in an attractive sealed polybag.
The backing card is barcoded and has an abbreviated vehicle
application listing on rear.
Radiator CapsTridon radiator caps are available in user friendly blister packaging
(larger sizes available boxed only). To assist with correct product selection
an abbreviated application list is supplied on the back of each blister pack.
All products are barcoded.

This section has been included to assist in identifying the range of Tridon thermostats. A diagram of each series (not to scale) shows dimensions in millimetres. Temperatures shown are the commencement to open of each thermostat in ºC.
The last three numbers are the opening temperature in ºF. The fully open temperature is around 12ºC above the commencement to open temperature or crack point of the thermostat. Always refer to the vehicle application list for the correct thermostat.

High Flow Thermostats
Today’s engines tend to generate more heat than older vehicles. Most
vehicle engines are controlled by computers and sensors to specifi c
temperature ranges which make fi tting the correct temperature
thermostat even more important.
In the past, if an engine overheated people tended to use a cooler
temperature thermostat to overcome this problem. This cannot be done
with high-tech engines of today which use calibrated engine temperature
switches and sensors providing information to the engine management
system. The installation of a cooler thermostat will lead to a lower than
normal engine operating temperature. As a result, the engine management
system will compensate for this lower temperature leading to poor fuel
economy, possible overheating and potential engine damage.
Vehicles with extra loads (especially if towing) will generate extra heat
through the engine requiring an even more effi cient cooling system.
Why High Flow Thermostats?High fl ow thermostats improve cooling system performance. They have
a larger valve (Figure 1) and allow approximately 30% more coolant to
fl ow to the radiator than standard type thermostats. High Flow thermostats
eliminate any need for using cooler temperature thermostats as a
temporary cure for overheating problems as was done in the past.
Using correct high fl ow thermostats at correct temperatures specifi ed
by original equipment manufacturers will not interfere with the engine
management system. Some high fl ow thermostats are fi tted with a
jiggle pin that enables the system pressure to be stabilised so that the valve
opens more easily. The jiggle pin also allows air pockets to move past the
thermostat and the temperature to be regulated more effi ciently. Fitting
high fl ow thermostats will allow your vehicle cooling system to operate
more effi ciently.

Thermostat Testing ProcedureA thermostat should be tested as detailed below. For accurate and valid
results, the tests should be performed under carefully controlled conditions.
1. Fill test container with 50% water and 50% coolant concentrate
(minimum 2 litres).
2. Open the thermostat and insert a fi ne thread under the valve seat.
3. Suspend the thermostat by the thread in the container. The thermostat
must be fully submerged and not touch any part of the container.
4. Place a thermometer into the coolant so that the bulb is adjacent to
the thermostat temperature sensing pill.
5. Heat the liquid slowly from cold to activate the power element properly.
Agitation of the test fl uid is required for accurate results
6. Observe the thermometer and note the temperature at once when
the thermostat drops from the thread. This reading is the
commencement to open temperature of the thermostat.
7. The temperature should be increased and the thermostat observed to
make sure it fully opens. The thermostat should be fully open at a
coolant temperature approximately 12°C (22°F) above the specifi ed
opening temperature. For example a thermostat with an opening
temperature of 82°C should be fully open at 82°C+12°C = 94°C
8. The distance of travel to achieve the fully open temperature is the
centre orifi ce diameter divided by 4. For example, orifi ce
DIA 24mm÷4 = 6mm. 6mm travel is the fully open extended position.
Note: As there is a tolerance of 2.5°C plus or minus of the nominated rating
a thermostat should be replaced if it opens at a temperature more than 6°C
(11°F) below or 3°C (5°F) above the specifi ed opening temperature.
Any testing needs to be done with the water heated at a slow, steady rate
with the thermostat being placed into the water at room temperature.
This allows the thermostat to heat up consistently and to normalise as the
water is heating up. If the water is allowed to heat too quickly it can begin
to boil before an accurate temperature is taken. At the same time, if there
is too much bubbling in the water incorrect temperature readings may be
taken. The thermostat will also take a little time to react to the temperature
of the water.
When cool, carefully examine the thermostat valve to make certain it is
properly seated. If it does not seat properly, it should be replaced. It is
important the replacement thermostat be of similar design with the proper
start to open temperature specifi cations.
Thermostat CalibrationAll Tridon thermostats are individually calibrated during the manufacturing
process to ensure 100% operation prior to sale. The calibration process is
carried out by the crimping of the bulb.
Each Tridon thermostat is stamped with the rated temperature. This
rated temperature is the commencement temperature and the fully open
temperature is 12°C (22°F) above the commencement to open temperature.
Thermostats do not work intermittently; they either work or do not work.
Should a thermostat fail it can either fail in the open or closed position.

Bypass Thermostat - Correct ApplicationFigure 1 shows the installation of the correct bypass style thermostat.
When the engine is cold the primary valve is closed preventing the fl ow of
coolant to the radiator. The secondary valve is open and directs the fl ow of
coolant back through the engine allowing it to warm up faster. As the engine
warms up the primary valve begins to open and the secondary valve begins
to close.
Figure 2 shows the secondary valve completely closed when the engine
is up to proper operating temperature. The primary valve is then also
completely open allowing full fl ow of coolant from the engine to the radiator.
Bypass Thermostat - Incorrect ApplicationFigure 3 shows the use of an incorrect bypass thermostat in a bypass
application. If the secondary valve is incorrect it may not close completely
and coolant continues to fl ow through the bypass port even though the
primary valve is fully open. This will cause hot coolant to return to the
engine before it has been cooled. The engine temperature will be hotter
than required and may cause premature failure of other components in the
cooling system.
For today’s engines to operate at maximum effi ciency in terms of
performance, fuel economy and emission levels it is important for the
engine to get to the correct operating temperature as soon as possible and
ensure that temperature is maintained during all operating conditions.
In order to do this, manufacturers have redesigned their engines to utilise
what is called a reverse poppet or bypass style thermostat. This style of
thermostat has two valves instead of the one valve that is seen on a
non-bypass thermostat. The primary valve operates exactly the same as the
non-bypass thermostat and opens allowing coolant to fl ow to the radiator
when the engine is at normal operating temperature. The secondary valve
allows coolant to be circulated back through the engine during its warm-up
stage. The temperature of the engine is able to rise more evenly,
minimising hot and cold spots in the engine. The primary valve begins to
open and the secondary valve closes when the engine temperature rises.
All coolant is then directed through the primary valve to the radiator
ensuring that the correct operating temperature is maintained.
A vehicle fi tted with a bypass style thermostat must always have the correct
bypass thermostat fi tted. Vehicles fi tted with non-bypass thermostats must

Selecting the ThermostatThe best way to ensure that no problem occurs when fi tting a new
thermostat is to make sure that it is the same style as the one being
replaced. The following should always be checked prior to installing a
new thermostat:

always be fi tted with the correct non-bypass thermostat. The fi tting of an
incorrect thermostat will cause the engine to run differently to its intended
design. Overheating and subsequent engine damage can be caused by
using an incorrect thermostat.
Non-Bypass Thermostat - Incorrect ApplicationIn this situation there is no secondary valve that will block off the bypass
port when the engine warms up (Figure 4). This will cause hot coolant to
continue to circulate through the engine without going to the radiator.
The engine will run hotter than required and may cause a failure of other
components in the cooling system.
Non-Bypass Thermostat - Correct ApplicationIn engines with no bypass port a non-bypass thermostat must be used
(Figure 5). No coolant fl ows until the thermostat opens. An incorrect
non-bypass thermostat used in these applications will normally not
physically fi t or will be loose in the housing. Correct opening temperatures
must also be used.
Bypass Thermostat - Incorrect ApplicationThis is the worst possible combination as the secondary valve of the
thermostat will hit the bottom of the housing (Figure 6) and prevent the
thermostat from opening, as no coolant whatsoever will circulate and the
engine will overheat and boil. Major engine damage may be caused as a
result of this situation.

Why does the engine run hotter with the new thermostat than the old one?This normally happens after either a routine thermostat replacement or after
major engine work (eg. Cylinder Head). The major cause of this complaint is
due to poor bleeding of air out of the system following any cooling system
servicing. Any air trapped in the system can travel and be held behind the
thermostat valve. As the thermostat sensing pill is not in contact with
coolant it is not sensing the correct temperature and causes overheating.
Care must be taken to ensure that all air has been bled from the system and
in many cases the bleeding procedure will need to be carried out three or
four times to remove all air. Incorrect coolants or coolant mixtures can also
cause localised boiling in the engine and create air bubbles that will travel
and cause the thermostat to operate incorrectly. If the engine has had major
work performed check all engine earths and body earths as one may have
been overlooked during the reassembly process. These earths can cause
incorrect temperature gauge readings or cause the temperature sender unit
or electric fan switch to operate incorrectly.
In applications with bypass valves the bypass may not be closing properly
and allowing hot coolant to be routed straight back in the engine. Always
check the thermostat dimensions to ensure that the correct thermostat has
been selected and supplied. It is also easy to measure the depth in the
thermostat housing to allow for the thermostat to open the required
amount. This allows the coolant to be shut off via the bypass port.
How long should a thermostat last?As a general rule of thumb, thermostats should be replaced every three
to fi ve years depending on the quality of the coolant and the frequency of
cooling system servicing. Radiator caps should be replaced approximately
every two years and should be tested every six to twelve months.
The life of the thermostat is also dependent on the quality of the water that
is used in the cooling system as different waters have different amounts of
chemicals that have been picked up as rain and while the water is stored.
The biggest killer is calcium. The calcium deposits tend to build up on the
thermostat and cause a slowing of the temperature pill reaction time. In
extreme cases this can cause the thermostat to not open at all and cause
cooling system failure.
It is recommended that only distilled or demineralised water be used in the
cooling system in order to maximise both the life and operating effi ciency of
all cooling system components.
How far should the thermostat open?Many people mistakenly assume that the thermostat must open an inch
(25.4mm) or more in order for the thermostat to be fl owing the required
volume. The thermostat opening distance is in direct relation to the primary
valve orifi ce diameter and the distance the thermostat needs to open will
always be one quarter of the orifi ce diameter. The valve assembly is
normally larger than the orifi ce size but, for example, a thermostat with an

orifi ce size of approximately 24mm will only need to be open 6mm and it is
allowing the maximum amount of coolant to fl ow. A thermostat with a 32mm
valve will only need to be open 8mm for maximum coolant fl ow.
Why does the thermostat not open when I test it?This is almost always due to poor testing procedure (refer to thermostat
testing procedure on page 97). What normally happens in the fi eld is
that the jug is boiled and the water is poured into a small container. The
thermostat is then placed into the container with the expectation that the
thermostat will open immediately. The thermostat is then condemned
because it has failed to open. What has actually happened is that the water
begins to cool down as soon as the jug is turned off. When it is poured
into the cold container some of the heat is drawn out and reduces the
temperature. When the thermostat is put into the water it also absorbs
some heat with a further reduction in the temperature of the water. The
thermostat takes a little time to react to the temperature of the water and
by the time the thermostat has reached the stage of opening the water
has cooled down considerably and the thermostat does not open.
Any testing needs to be done with the water heated at a slow steady rate
with the thermostat being placed into the water about 20°C before the
expected opening temperature. This allows the thermostat to heat up
consistently and to normalise as the water is heating up.
If the water is allowed to heat too quickly it can begin to boil before an
accurate temperature is taken. At the same time if there is too much
bubbling in the water incorrect temperature readings may be taken. The
thermostat will also take a little time to react to the temperature of the water.
I have recently replaced a thermostat to overcome an overheating problem and the vehicle is still overheating. I have installed a second thermostat and the vehicle is still overheating. Is it possible both thermostats are faulty?No. All Tridon thermostats are factory calibrated and all function prior to
sale. The replacement of the thermostat has not fi xed the overheating
problem as it is not the cause of the problem. As the cooling system is
complex, the cause of an overheating problem could be widespread.

A comprehensive range of rubber ring gaskets (seals) is available to suit various vehicle applications. Certain thermostat part numbers are supplied complete with rubber ‘O’ ring seals. Information on thermostats supplied complete with ‘O’ ring are detailed in the thermostat identifi cation guide. Refer to the vehicle application list for the recommended paper gasket or ‘O’ ring seal.
