Serum origin refers to the country in which the raw blood was collected. This is not to be confused with the country in which the raw serum was sterile filtered, having originated elsewhere. With HyClone Sera products, the country of origin is not a secret. The documentation you receive will clearly state the country or countries of origin. This information is on the Certificate of Analysis and Certificate of Origin.

New Zealand The great expanse of the Pacific Ocean has protected New Zealand’s islands from many outside influences, both geographically and biologically. One of the benefits of this isolation is that New Zealand has the fewest reported bovine diseases in the world and the USDA has determined it to be free from BSE and FMD. This makes New Zealand FBS an excellent source of bovine serum as it offers maximum safety. New Zealand FBS is carefully collected, processed and filtered in our own New Zealand facility.

Australian Our Characterized Australian FBS is sourced from only USDA or Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service approved abattoirs in Australia. We have found that Australian methods of animal husbandry are world class with unsurpassed animal nutrition and healthcare. As with New Zealand, Australia is an island continent thus making animal disease control and management easier than in most areas of the world. The USDA also considers Australia to be free of BSE and FMD.

USDAUSDA Tested FBS is sourced from several Central American countries (Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala) which are all recognized as being free of BSE and FMD by the USDA. Serum from Central America is USDA safety tested.

There are specific requirements for serum used in a variety of cell culture applications involved with modern biopharmaceutical research; therefore, a number of processing methods are employed to yield a suitable product for specific applications.

Some treatments are used to remove adventitious agents and other processes filter various natural serum constituents that may disrupt certain analytical techniques or assays.

Based on our serum processing and application understanding, we have the ability to perform a number of tests to identify serum lots with characteristics that make them ideal for specific cell lines and protocols.

Post-Filtration TreatmentsGamma Irradiation: This is a powerful tool to further reduce the risk of adventitious viruses present in serum. The irradiation process used should be validated to deliver a minimum dose of 25 kGy. If manufacturing products for use in humans or in animals, irradiation should be a routine requirement.

Heat Inactivation: Exposing serum to a temperature of 56° C for 30 minutes is a common post-filtration process. It may be effective in reducing some adventitious agents and may be used in addition to, but never substituted for, gamma irradiation. Both services are available by request.

Super Low IgG FBSThis product is designed for applications where extremely low levels of inherent bovine IgG are required. Our Super Low IgG FBS has been chromatographically treated to reduce IgG levels to less than 5 μg/mL while still retaining superior cell growth properties.

Our Donor Adult Bovine serum is sourced from a closed herd maintained on USDA-licensed premises. Cattle from these closed herds are used exclusively for the production of donor bovine blood products.

Donor Equine Equine serum is carefully collected from animals fed an enriched diet to ensure proper nutrition. The horses are bled in an enclosed facility specially equipped for aseptic collection after being fasted to reduce lipid concentration. Coggins tests for equine infectious anemia are routinely performed on each horse.

New Zealand DonorSourced from New Zealand, this serum is processed and sterile filtered using three sequential 100 nm (0.1 Rm) pore-size rated filters.

New Zealand Porcine Our Porcine serum is sourced from New Zealand and filtered in the US through multiple 200 nm (0.2 µm) pore-size rated filters and is gamma irradiated at 25-40 kGy after filtration.

sApplications for HyClone Serum-Free Media (SFM) can be found in many biotechnology fields, including the production of human and animal biopharmaceuticals, diagnostic reagents and bioagricultural products. Due to increased attention on producing biologicals representative of their native form, our Serum-Free Media focuses on supporting mammalian and invertebrate cell culture platforms. Some of the critical cell culture applications of these platforms include the expression of recombinant proteins, monoclonal antibodies, viral vectors for gene therapy, and viral vaccines. These applications constitute the majority of biopharmaceutical research, development and manufacturing employing eukaryotic cell culture.

Developed through the Metabolic Pathway Design™ approach, our Serum-Free Media support superior performance in multiple cell culture platforms. The objective for developing serum-free media through Metabolic Pathway Design is to provide the intended cell line with the nutrients needed to promote cell growth and stimulate productivity.
