There Will Be New Rules Next Week - Exhibition Review Dundee Contemporary Arts are currently showcasing the work of the late Sister Corita Kent, but true to their name are doing so in a fresh, inspiring new manner. For example, by exhibiting come of Kent's best known works they have provided various other lesser known artists the chance to showcase their own work on a much larger stage. Kent’s extensive work in the field of serigraphs, for example, have allowed a display of her own work to showcase the reflections in similar pieces by Ciara Philips. Philips’ vast print work is very reminiscent of the somehow subdued typographical work by Kent. Scott Myles also shows reflections upon the work of Kent in his contributions to the show, a large print of acrylic on aluminum is primarily a typographical piece (a field in which Sister Corita Kent was more than profound in), but also bears an almost religious message. Although the piece, which simply reads GOOD ACTS WANTED was originally conceived with intentions of representing a small pub looking for quality musical groups to entertain their customers, when paralleled along side Kent’s work, which has her spiritual background looming over it in an ironically God-like fashion, a deeper meaning becomes clear. The work could now appear to literally be pleading for any signs of humanity, once again this bears a particular relevance to the work of Kent given her extensive work as a political activist through her medium. Once quoted as saying "I am not brave enough to not pay my income tax and risk going to jail. But I can say rather freely what I want to say with my art”, it is perhaps only right that this celebration and reflection of Sister Corita Kent’s work and influence on contemporary artists is a free exhibition, and a true eye opener to her work and values.
