The Raven Times 08 - February 2010 - 1 Happy New Year Everybody! ;-) (That’s the traditional thing to say on any January publication in the western world isn’t it?). Another genocide of silence coupled with mass environmental pollution by gunpowder has been and gone on new- years eve. I can still smell the cordite and see the slight twitches of panic in the eyes of all the animals I see outside. Another tax-envelope has hit our doormat demanding half of everything you give to us for the queen and the rest of her fascist landowning “nobles”. The environment is still fucked and getting worse, the animals are still being tortured; the poor are still being exploited. The nice black American president still hasn’t managed to stop occupying other peoples’ land and oil-fields in the name of “Freedom”....(and Europe and the UN are still accepting it like a bunch of defenseless little kids who must give their lunch money to the big ugly school bully). So all is well and “as it always was ” in the world of humans (for the moment anyway). But what of the “World of OMNIA”? What is going on there? We have learned a lot in the looooooooong and chaotic 2009 which nearly killed us as a band. Especially the leaving of one or two crew and band members at critical times shocked and saddened us greatly. Hard lessons were learned by all, and as the saying goes “if it doesn’t manage to kill you it will make you stronger” so we came out OK in the end (although it did seriously fuck up our trust in humans, especially some so-called “friends”...) And now we stand at the beginning of yet another new year with concerts, tours and a whole new CD project filled with our latest compositions. I was looking at the list of songs we are working on and I couldn’t help but notice that there are a lot more “Dark” pieces in there, songs of pain, blood and mad- ness mixed in with the usual nature-loving PaganFolk that you are used to. This is because Jenny and me actually become happier by playing sad or dramatic music (we have always had a passion for Gothic horror and Drama). I hope this will not disappoint too many of you because I realize that a lot of our fans see us a “Positive energy providers” and they might not get the same happy feeling from listening to the Darkness that resides within us as well. But Life is all balance between light and dark even if you don’t see it. 1 Dark Editorial by Steve Sic

You see, a lot of people take energy and hope from our music, it helps them to face their lives, their fears, their diseases of the mind and body. And we are proud and happy every time somebody tells us how OMNIA’s music helped them to survive cancer or other forms of terminal disease, or how it helped them through some personal ordeal, or how they didn’t commit suicide because of “Alive!” ...or how they stopped cutting themselves when they heard our songs, etc. The list is really very long and is grow-ing daily. But do you realize that this energy comes from somewhere? Some comes straight from nature herself but a most of it comes directly from Jenny and me personally...soul and body. It’s funny but the more people we manage to help and give energy, the more it is draining away our own life...Like a candle which burns brighter than the rest, so it will burn down sooner. It might sound scary, but it’s ok, we are aware of this process and we have accepted it.Not because we feel comfortable as marters or something, I sure as hell ain’t a Mother Theresa and neither is Jenny. And our own Gods won’t perform any handy miracles for us because they already have enough on their minds with just running the world. But I just can’t help thinking that even though this music stuff will probably destroy us, we will simply have to keep on doing it...because it’s what do best, it’s what we are and it’s what we’ll keep on doing right till the end...So dudes and dudettes...have a great year; be useful and don’t waste your life and this planet because you only have one and it won’t last forever. And if you feel that your “job” is slowly killing you, make bloody sure that it’s worth it!

News

Well people, as you may remember we asked in the last Raven Times for one of you to come forward and join our happy little band of social-misfits on stage as our new guitar player.

I had no idea that so much talent exists among our fans who read this magazine, because we got loads of applicants for ‘the job’ and although not a single one of them actually looked like Johnny Depp or Salma Hayek (shame!). There were quite a few that could actually play like Joe and Kyle Gass! (There were also some very funny applicants, and one or two unnerving ones) but all in all just going through the process of selection was amazing fun for Jenny and myself. And although there were to my mind 4 peo-ple that could have filled the hole in our musical ensemble we have picked the one whom we considered to be the most musical, social, practical and available...

So, thanx again all of you guys (no girls!) who tried but whom we had to discount. You are all worthy and a lot of you are very good musi-cians indeed. We would have loved to take you all aboard but as they say in one particular cult eighties film “there can be only one!” and in OMNIA’s case his name is Philip!

Philip will be learning the ancient and venerated art of OMNIA-PAGANFOLK during the course of the com-ing months as he will be playing with us on stages throughout Europe (check out the gig agenda at the end of this Raven Times). If he survives the coming “interesting times” with us we’ll get him interviewed in this magazine so you’ll know more about him, if we drive him bananas and he breaks along the way we’ll let you know in which mental-institute he ends up, so you can send him flowers...

Who is Philip?

Our very own Joe has become a father for the second time. Baby Shane was born on Janu-ary the 20th 2010.

His lovely girlfriend Joanna and Shane are doing well!

We are of course thrilled and filled with joy and we wish Joe, Joanna and Shane lots of love, wisdom and heaps of music!

Joe is father again

Fairy Ball III in Bibelot

The preparations for the (very sexy) 3rd Fairy Ball on Valentine’s day (in the Bibelot, Dordrecht, NL 14th Feb. 2010) are in full swing and some of the artists are getting nervous and giggly about going on stage in a more daring-look. All the denizens of Fairyland: Elves and Trolls Nymphs and Goblins no matter what they look like or where they come from, be they big or small, beautiful of hideous, they’ll all make an extra effort to wear their finest and show off, or to stay inconspicuous and just look at the gathered hosts of weird people. We had asked Luka to strip naked on stage but in the interests of public health and safety we have decided that this may be going too far (this would be far too shocking and confron-tational for most of the audience anyway, because...well, I won’t go into details but let’s just say that Luka really has NO need for a big expensive car!). But who knows? Maybe we can get him to wear a tanga or a calabash or something instead...we’re still working on it (er...are you reading this as well Luka?).

Kelvin Kalvus (you know, the guy with the magical glass contact Balls) will probably wear something really weird as he’s doing his inhuman thing on stage with us! (at least that’s what he told me in Berlin around new year!) Aisha the wonderful stage dancer and the Fairyesque fire-fakir girls of Las Fuegas are of course naturally sexy just by being themselves so whatever their stage look will be, they will surely blow your mind! And the always lovely Kaat will let the strings of her Nyckelharpa sing a sweet spell on all you Poets and Lovers gathered there with us in the converted Church! Our sweet friends Coca, Lies and Renske of “Kelten Zonder Grenzen” will perform with their enchanting harps, violin and hurdy-gurdy as our support act, (one of those harps is an exact copy of Jenny’s Dreamharp btw.) And because this is a Fairy Ball there will of course be BalFolk dancing (with instruction at the start of the evening!).

Because so many of you (and us) will look extra freaky on this night Marcel Bakker (our friendly photog-rapher) has offered to take along his professional lamps and stuff to make a portable photo-studio at the FairyBall so he can take really good pictures of all who wish to have a more physical memory of this unique evening.

And of course after the “boob-signing session”(!) there will be the opportunity to pose for pictures in front of Marcel’s camera together with the Band members...

So in the words of the late great John Lennon: “a splendid time is guaranteed for all!”

We’ll see you there!

NEW CD OMNIA is finally on the way!

Yep the Harpy cries: “ ‘tis time ‘tis time!”

We can start the process of making the new and long await-ed OMNIA cd (well long awaited by us anyway! Jenny and me are dying to get all our new songs on disc, and we have an eager Tommy and Philip who would love to get into the studio to prove their worth!

The cool news is we are not able to do this because some crazy millionaire simply gave us the money, nope! And we didn’t win the lottery neither, nope! It’s because of you, our loyal fans, friends and tribe members, yes... you!

You guys have simply been buying our merchandise and you keep coming to our gigs which supports us, so we have now been able to save up just about enough to get us ‘back-in-business’ and start the project!

Some of you were even mad enough to actually donate us some of your own cash! (which is totally crazy of course if you’re also a poor struggling outcast like us!) ...but Thanx anyway because every little bit helps! (and of course we don’t need as much as a mainstream band to make a CD because we don’t have a fecking management and other forms of bullshit to support ;-) )

The actual recording of OMNIA “..?..” will commence in February 2010 and the release date will be some-where during the summer/autumn of 2010 if all goes well.

Oh yeah, and for those of you wondering what happened to the rest of the awesome film material from Castlefest 2009 (as well as the amazing sound recordings of unsurpassed energy and ‘group feeling’)...well...maybe ...just maybe, we’ll stick in a DVD (!) together with this CD as well!. But that really depends on how well our merchandise sales and gigs go in the meantime. And remember what I said on the OMNIA forum guys! We really appreci-ate it BUT please don’t give us any money if you are poor (just buying something from our store is all the help we need). We live like Robin Hood... we prefer to only take money from the rich...OK? We’ll keep you updated on the progress of this new child of ours!

Joe’s new Job!

OMNIA Ostara-gig in Brussels!

Because the vice-president of the EC Margot Wallstrom is leaving Brussels, Joe has found a new job for the EC.

From the 1st of February 2010 he will be the European Commission Spokesperson for the

Environment! :-) His boss will be Janez Potocnik (see pic-ture), who will be the new European Commissioner for the Environ-

ment. He is currently the European Commissioner for Science and Research and a former Minister for European Affairs in Slovenia.

Together Janez, Joe and their team will be responsible for all kinds of use-ful “Europe-stuff” including Air, Water, Soil, Nature and Biodiversity!

And thus we have our own OMNIA-pagan Joe in a very useful position of power, where he can really do some good!

We will be holding a special Ostara gig in the VK*-Club in Brussels on the 20th of March 2010! This is of course to have fun while celebrating the ancient Celtic Feast of the new spring dawning, the reawakening of life and the passage of Light through Dark, named after the Goddess OSTARA.

Some misguided Arab ‘one god’-cultists turned this feast into ‘Easter’ because they can’t spell or pro-nounce that properly and they somehow think that for some reason Jesus was into chocolate eggs and Bunnies at the time of crucifixion...ahem!

Well, at least we know what the eggs and the bunnies symbolize, don’t we kids!? ;-)

info:www.vkconcerts.be

Jenny and myself did a very intimate concert, just the two of us, complete-ly pure, no amplifiers or anything and for a tiny audience of only 40 people at “Dreamharps” last December. It was very liberating for us to be able to play such an ‘easy and free’ show without the usual complicated setup

and organization work for a whole band that is the usual drill for us.

We had almost forgotten that we can play the purest music if we simply play together with-out any stress around us, so you can definitely expect us to do this again sometime soon when we feel

like a break from all the noise and stuff of a “normal” OMNIA show

Stenny play intimate OMNIA show together!

Behind the team: introducing “editor of the RavenTimes” FemkeBy Femke

Where to start? Oh right… at the beginning! I am Femke, currently residing in Amersfoort together with my boyfriend Thomas and our plants. Sadly we’re not allowed to have pets or right now, otherwise a large list with their names would follow. But oh well! You all under-stand. I am twenty-one years of age and busy with all sorts of things: I have my own dread & accessories business, help out with Vana Events, visit festivals and concerts, do some modeling work and study in Utrecht where I dig through the Middle Ages and sometimes some Celtic culture on the side, both of which are my biggest passions.

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been telling everyone that when I grow up I’ll become an archaeologist! I envisioned myself as a fe-male version of Indiana Jones, rummaging through pyramids search-ing for odd mummies and beautiful jewellery. I was fascinated by all the myths, legends and the Egyptian Gods. The older I got, the more different cultures started to capture my interest. From Egyptians to the Greek, from the Greek to the Romans and from the Romans to the Celts. Spurred on by wondrous stories, legends and the culture itself I started rummaging through all sorts of different Pagan forums and got in contact with like-minded history fanatics, one of which sent me a song with the message “you should listen to this! You’ll absolutely love it!” I was sent an MP3 with the name ‘Morrigan’ by an obscure group called OMNIA.

With their primordial music, their invigorating enthusiasm and passion I enjoyed the performances of Luka, Jenny and Steve. One thing lead to another and here I am, sitting behind my laptop, lost between all kinds of files and separate articles I have to translate, sort, edit and gather, to provide you all – together with OMNIA and the crew – every

once in a while with this wonderful piece of reading material.

I hope you’ll enjoy it!

Warm winter wishes & greenthings

Femke

Behind the band: Tom in 10 photo’sBy Tom

Hello dear pagans,

I, too, had to face the music; digging up pictures you hoped you would never have to show to anyone but yourself. The wrong hairstyles, your big brother’s tacky sweaters your mum made you wear. I am going to reveal everything, unashamed to the entire Pagan Clan, giving all for the band!

I have the advantage of only being 23 years old. So every memory is easily retrieved and we only have a limited past to dig in. Together with my mum we uncov-ered some old photo albums and made a small selec-tion. I even lived in the age where there were no digital cameras, old-fashioned.

I was the most adorable baby and child in the entire world. Always smiling with cute freckles. I think that back then I had as much fun in life as I do now, even though I now know how the world really works. And should you ever need a picture of me for your t-shirt, there you go.

I grew up in a small town, my mother came from a farmer’s family and was one of the few that didn’t go on to practice the trade herself. There was of course stil plenty of opportunities to visit grandpa or one of my uncles or aunts at the farm to play. Amongst the sheep, cows, pigs and chicken. Running through the fields, milking the cows, feeding the pigs.

Page 13: The_Raven_Times_8_-_EN

The Raven Times 08 - February 2010 - 13

I was played soccer, chasing a ball for an hour, three times a week. I was wise beyond my years and decided to become a goalie. Standing on my line, shouting encouragements to my team and stopping a ball (or not) every once in a while. I’ve kept at it till I reached ten years. When you grow up you have to guard a bigger goal and they kicked over and past me, a good time to quit my shiny. And when you be-come champion you were driven through the village on a flat-bed. And behold, here we have Tom in his keeper’s kit with drums in front of him.

Page 14: The_Raven_Times_8_-_EN

14 - The Raven Times 08 - February 2010

This must have been the very first of Tom with an instru-ment. At home on my father’s organ, pressing buttons and making noise.

When I was eight I was allowed to come to a marching band rehearsal and came home with a plate and two sticks. Prac-tice time! After two years of trial and error I had to learn to walk with a drum, walking in circles in the backyard.

If you manage to remember all the marches and perform well enough you are given a uniform. You know, one of those suits you either love, or hate. I loved them, I loved playing music with a group.

And I still do, I teach two percussion groups, one of which is the group I once started at myself. And when I don’t have to work, or play with the band I still march with them whenever I get the chance.

When you’ve become proficient playing a rub-ber plank you look for a new challenge. With all buckets and pans lined up, I borrowed two spoons from my mother and went to work.

Regretfully for my neighbours (who after hav-ing to endure this cacophony six times a day) the drum set finally came. As a birthday gift. Imme-diately I was sent off to the local music school to learn how to use it. I left after six years and after I graduated cum laude for the highest exam Or-chestral-percussion, which means that I also know how to play the large kettledrums, xylophone and African percussion.

Since that time I evolved further, by watching other drummers and by using instructional DVDs. But mostly by practising for days, wearing my headphones, repeating over and over again what I wanted to learn. That proved to be the winning formula for me. Afterwards I gave workshops, taught numerous students and played in many bands. And here I am guarding the back line, ready to rock, roll & folk and complete and total world domination.

Omnia at DreamharpsBy Ans

Hello, I’m Jennifer’s mum Ans and together with Jenny’s dad Hans we make a living selling Triplett harps from our showroom in the back of our house. This little company called Dreamharps was originally found-ed together with Jennifer.

After OMNIA’s main practice location “the PaganAttic” was closed OMNIA needed a new place to re-hearse, so we offered to let them use the Dreamharps showroom with great success (“Alive!” and “World of Omnia” we’re partly written and practiced there)

They often stay for a couple of days to practice cause there’s rooms and beds enough at “Mum and Dad’s place” and of course all the food they can eat, such luxury! There’s some rescheduling and planning involved for me though, cause while they are rehearsing it’s not possible for customers to try out any of the harps, but most of them understand as many of them are OMNIA fans!

It’s wonderful to hear the progress in the songs and then later hear them in the theatre. It’s always a merry mess in the evenings, involving single malt whisky for the “seniors” and beer for the “youngsters”. In the summertime they can be found lounging in the garden or swimming in the solar heated salt-water pool. In the winter we gather around the cosy fireplace inside. Of course we have regular guests of OM-NIA around as well, like those nice people from Irfan, Francesco Bianchini or Oliver Pade sometimes just for fun and also for Steve and Jenny to practice with.

If the whole band practices then Luka usually goes back home to his wife in the evening, but if we serve (eco) chicken with French fries we can usually convince him to join in.

I could go on for hours, but I’ll let the pictures tell the tale. We are always honoured to be able to sup-port such kind, nice, musically talented artists and family to reach wonderful heights. Everyone benefits. We hope that we can keep doing so for a long time to give them all the best on their musical journey.

Usually the first to arrive: Jenny and Steve in the OMNIA van! here it is parked warm and cosy right next to our Dreamharps van in front of our house..

What are you? Roadie or musician?

I’ll take that, got one hand left! Jenny is looking forward to the rehearsal.

It’s a tight squeeze in amongst the harps. Steve also plays a little “Dream” harp!

Page 18: The_Raven_Times_8_-_EN

Time for some R&R in the pool! But how do you keep your dreads dry? Time to ask the mermaids for some advice.

Tom too enjoys the cool.

After all this practising it’s time for dinner! here with Kalin from Irfan.

Jennifer plays the harp, amongst the harps. Rehearsal for the “old school gig”!

“I am not sure I want to join this band of fruitcakes” newbie Philip seems to have doubts!.

Olympic swimmer Joe looks a bit nervous, so Jenny prepares a safety device for him!

Luka takes up every opportunity to express his love of weapons..

Steve, the crocodile hunter! Hans and Joe are content.

Poor ashtray, poor lungs, so many cigarettes and joints!

Thankfully Stenny stays healthy with plenty of exercise!

Page 20: The_Raven_Times_8_-_EN

And not only do they practice at Dreamharps, sometimes Stenny and one or two of the others per-form special “intimate acoustic” shows there too! Here is OMNIA as Steve, Joe, Jenny and Luka... Happy and satisfied after such a performance.

Jenny plays for a bit in the evening on the same piano that has been with her since she was six years old. Staying up late to play with Jenny’s “my little

pony” castle (Steve loves this stuff!)

Tom looks healthy and happy after a good night’s sleep

Breakfast! Tom and Jenny making jokes and Steve’s making last minute preparations before going off to yet another gig somewhere.

Interview with JennyBy Femke

Where do you get your inspiration?

Inspiration often comes from the instrument I’m holding at a certain moment. Every instrument has its own songs, sleeping inside of it. When combined with enough space and tranquillity in my head, I can tap into the soul of the instrument and melodies just come out. Steve and me never pretend any melody is really written only by us. We merely catch it and put it into a form, combine it with words and give it a structure.

What do you consider a chal lenge?

I love learning new instruments. It is an enormous challenge for me to learn as many as I can as well as I can. Not only do I love being able to play an instrument really well, I also love the process of learning. I am one of those strange people that actually enjoy exercises like playing scales and triads on a piano.

What is your hidden talent?

I have the feeling I have none, really, that people reading this magazine don’t know of. My talent is very concentrated around music. I used to be able to draw okay-ish at school, but I never do that anymore (anyway, Steve is so good at it, why would I bother :oP ). I can sew a bit, but I am not that practical and need a good pattern first. I made a lot of my stage outfits myself but it takes me ages to complete a project and I just don’t want to waste time on it when I have close friends me like Emma of Senjo mak-ing amazing stuff for me. So anyway, not really sure if there’s any. Not that I know of, anyway

What would you be doing if you hadn’t been in a band?

Haha, that’s a funny one. From the age of, eh, as long as I can actually remember, I have wanted to be, or maybe without trying to sound arrogant, knew I would be, a musician. First I thought I would be a classical pianist (I had visions of me in big Gothic dresses with tattoos and purple hair playing Mozart in the “Concertgebouw”) but soon realized that I wasn’t good enough for that. I tried becoming a music teacher studying Music Education at the Conservatory of Music in Amsterdam but gave up after nearly 2 years because it was such a demanding study I didn’t have time to make music anymore (how ironic)! The only thing I could think of is being a music teacher, teaching harp and piano or something like that.

What do you hate?

A lot of things that a lot of people do....I am actually very easily irritated you know.

There’s stuff that can really piss me off (next to the human race fucking up the world in a big way), like not listening, being stupid or ignorant, behaving absolutely stupidly or dangerously on the road, only thinking of money, and so on and on (man, I am becoming irritated just listing this)!

Page 22: The_Raven_Times_8_-_EN

22 - The Raven Times 08 - February 2010

What do you consider to be the best thing about yourself?

I look adorable when I’m asleep

Who or what would you be, beside yourself?

Steve!

I have this little theory, that when you’re really REALLY in love with somebody, you actually wouldn’t mind being like this per-son. Try thinking about it...

What is something you want to do before you die?

Travel around the world together with Steve and all our instru-ments in a big bus, visiting all our talented friends in all these different countries, seeing the traditions and cultures in all these places....That kind of thing. We’ll need a sabbatical for that so maybe in a few years....Who knows.....

What is the most beautiful or memorable location you’ve ever been to?

The most beautiful physical place I’ve ever been to was the Grand Canyon at sunrise in the summer. But there’s beauty everywhere if you are able to see the world in detail, maybe like a child. I am one of those people who walk around in a forest stopping every few meters going ‘Ooh! Look at this pretty thingy here!’. If I sit down in nature I tend to ‘zoom in’ on the floor, and man, there’s a lot to see there....

What is your most prized possession?

Not counting my husband as property, I would say my harps. If anything bad would happen to them, no money could make it better. They have a soul and I feel connected to them. So much, that I can’t even stand it if somebody touches them without asking *grrr* :o) .

If there was one thing you were allowed to improve in the world, what would it be?

Well, seeing to it less people are being born would be a good one, solving a lot of problems. On a smaller scale, I think here in Holland it would be very good if people would sing with their parents much more in their childhood, and respect their own land and nature. We’re really such a business-like little popula-tion here.....Are cars, highways and big (empty) office blocks really that important? Is it really okay to squeeze millions of pigs, chickens and cows into these concentration camp-stables as if they are just a ‘product’? And why is anything that comes from abroad automatically better? Oh well, I could go on for ages I guess....

You all know me as OMNIA’s guitar player but I also work as a Spokesperson for Margot Wallström, the Vice-President of the European Commission. Why? What? How? Isn’t politics just a load of crap in-volving lots of boring middle-aged people in suits conspiring with big business to run our lives? Well yes some of it is, but…

I’ve never been a political person in the sense that I have never joined a political party and probably never will. The whole political party scene bores me to death. Have you ever watched those excru-ciating party political conferences on TV? Nope, me neither. Have you ever switched over to South Park when the TV news is examining the latest budget in minute detail? Yep, me too. But still…

Have you ever got angry about something and taken part in a demonstration? I have. Have you ever signed a petition? I have. Ever supported an organization like Friends of the Earth or Amnesty Interna-tional? Yes. Do you have opinions about how the world should be run? Me too. I had a conversation once with one of Margot’s political advisors, a former Greenpeace activist, during which I said I was non-po-litical. “Of course you’re political!” she said, “Look at your views on the environment, on development, on social justice!” And she pointed out that I was playing in a political band and managing the website of the Vice-President of the European Commission who is also one of the leading figures in the Social Demo-cratic Party in Sweden. I thought about this and reached the conclusion that she was right. I am political. And so is OMNIA. We care about what happens to our world and we try to make our own little contribu-tion to changing it by writing songs about it and speaking about it. That’s real politics.

So where does the EU fit into all of this? I started working for the European Commission years ago. I had always been aware of it because my sister who is 10 years older than me used to work for the European Parliament and I had visited her in Luxembourg several times. I was always interested in the way she worked with people of all nationalities and in Ireland at the time the EU was seen very much as a ‘good thing’. When Ireland was a poor country our generous neighbours in the EU gave us a hell of a lot of money with no strings attached and you tend to remember and appreciate things like that.

I still like the EU because I see the practical benefits of it, especially as a musician. When I was touring Europe with Shantalla we were constantly changing money and answering questions at border controls. Now, since the euro and open borders were introduced, with OMNIA that rarely happens (except in the UK! ☺ ). My mobile phone calls are also much cheaper as a result of EU rules. I also like the EU because it is the biggest donor of humanitarian aid in the world and it has taken the lead in action against cli-mate change.

OMNIA, the EU and politicsBy Joe

Page 24: The_Raven_Times_8_-_EN

24 - The Raven Times 08 - February 2010

Despite the fact that most of Europe’s governments are centre-right these days I have no problem work-ing for an organization – the European Commission – that tries to set an agenda which is all about creat-ing growth and jobs and at the same time investing in green technology and protecting the environment. I have no problem working for an organization that is against discrimination and wants to protect funda-mental rights. No problem with an organization that wants to help the Third World. Add to that the fact that my boss shares my view of the world and that she is one of the most popular politicians in Sweden (and she is also an OMNIA fan) and I have no problem sleeping at night.

I sometimes read a lot of crap about the EU in the press. Especially the British press but you see it in Holland, Austria, Denmark, Czech Republic and other countries at times. Frankly, it pisses me off. Peo-ple whine about the ‘EU Super state’ or the ‘vast bureaucracy’. It is neither. The idea of a United States of Europe remains just that. Someone’s idea. It will never happen because most people don’t want it to happen. Likewise the vast bureaucracy is actually very small – smaller than most Ministries in the average country. People rant about ‘waste, fraud and corruption’ in the EU when in fact the EU’s books are clean and any ‘waste, fraud and corruption’ can be traced directly to the member countries. And people make up ludicrous stories about EU rules which when you examine them turn out to be completely false.

Like all organizations the EU has its faults but I am still convinced it is a ‘good thing’. Since the EU was created in 1957 none of its members have gone to war with each other which is in stark contrast to the pre-EU Europe. Dictatorships have fallen in Spain, Portugal and Greece. Communist regimes have fallen in Eastern Europe. Our collective wealth has increased enormously, making the vast majority of us better off than our grandparents ever were. If its policies ever change away from caring about people and about the planet then I will review the situation but I really don’t see that happening.

Behind The PaganClanBy Steve Sic

The Tribes are gathering!

I must say that the reactions were better than we expected after asking you guys to form PaganClan tribes of friends, fans and other OMNIA-supporters. We now have a growing group of Tribes, all over Eu-rope and also one in South America!

These Tribes are arranging their own get-togethers and activities, they visit OMNIA gigs as a group, they motivate each other to make Art and ‘Do Stuff’, they help us to promote and flyer for OMNIA-gigs etc. It’s great to know that the people whom we inspire are now doing something back for us in return. It has this ‘what goes around comes around’ feeling (one of our many mottoes) which is so rare and refreshing in these modern egocentric times of forced individualism.

If you haven’t found a Tribe to join yet, here is the list of existing tribes as of December 2009.

Or maybe you would like to start a tribe of your own? Well then simply contact one of our dear sweet TribeMothers and they will be glad to help you out.

English and German language = [email protected]

Dutch language = [email protected]

French language = [email protected]

I had mentioned before that we would be setting up ‘Quests’ to keep you guys busy.

Now I don’t want to force you to do too much, because you are actually already doing what I think is most useful (i.e.: getting together and cooperating with each other) but the ‘normal’ world and the world of OMNIA can both use some help so here goes:

For the start of this New Year I would like all the Tribes to do three things;

Quest 1: Come with your whole tribe to an OMNIA-show anywhere if you can, so we can meet you as a complete group to say “hello!” (We met a couple of tribes during the last months and it is a great feeling for us as a band. We want to meet you so we can feel that we are in this together! “never be too shy to say Hi!” if you are a tribe messenger or member, sometimes at a show, we might seem a little distracted and busy but that doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate meeting you and knowing that you are part of the growing PaganClan!

Page 30: The_Raven_Times_8_-_EN

30 - The Raven Times 08 - February 2010

Quest 2: Make at least one effort in January/February 2010 to help the plants/trees and/or the wild animals and birds in the specific area where you live. How you do this exactly is up to you and your own personal style of ‘action’ (so cleaning up the rubbish in a city-park, preventing the death of an old tree, feeding starved deer in a forest ,feeding starved geese in the park or seriously incapacitating an animal torturing industrial ‘mega-farm’ would all be considered ‘good enough’) the important part is that you try to do it together as a group and that you let the TribeMothers know what you did (take pictures!) so we can report on the successes of the weirdest, coolest, funniest or most heart-warming actions in the next Raven Times.

PS: caution! : if you decide to blow something up, or assassinate anyone important be sure to wear a balaclava before you take any actual pictures ;-)

Quest 3: we want all of you to ‘promote’ for us. So you can get more people into our world by simply telling your friends and relations about us and letting them hear our music. But we will

also be making new flyers to promote our upcoming gigs in various parts of Europe (although mostly Hol-land, Germany and Belgium) and if you live in the area of one or more of these gigs you will be asked by the tribe messengers to spread flyers and posters in all the cool places where OMNIA fans might hang out (cool venues and bars, games and LARP clubs, freaky fantasy and underground shops, record shops etc.)

Let’s keep up the good work together! And don’t try to act like a Human because Fairies are much much cooler! “Etrezomp Ni Kelted!”

Good times with weaponsBy Luka

Some time before OMNIA began its transformation into the Paganfolk band you know nowadays, we performed shows of an entirely different kind. Instead of words like ‘bodhran’, ‘bouzouki’ and ‘slidgeridoo’, the most commonly used terms were ‘shortsword’, ‘shieldboss’ and ‘in yer face’. We performed stunt fights as Iron-Age Celtic warriors, Dacian falxmen or Roman gladiators.

I hear you think: “You were a gladia-tor?” Yes I was. You might have won-dered where the name Sine Missione on our first CD comes from, and why there are fighting gladiators on the cover. Sine Missione means ‘without mercy’, or, in terms of the gladiator fights ancient Rome: ‘to the death’. And yes, that’s Steve Sic and me locked in mortal combat. Notice the wicked hooked ‘sica’ blade I’m holding. Inspiration for the Uruk-Hai swords in the Lord of the Rings mov-ies? It certainly looks cool enough.

Page 32: The_Raven_Times_8_-_EN

32 - The Raven Times 08 - February 2010

Ah, the old days! When we were still indestructible and did not worry about such petty ailments such as a sore throat or bruised finger! Whether we charged Roman shield-walls or endured the blistering sun in a dusty arena, we fought to demonstrate, to entertain, and also just for the fun of it. Of course the most fun was to piss off all the ‘hysteri-cally correct’ authorities in the re-enactment scene. Imagine the facial expression of such people when during a serious stunt fight, one of us suddenly produces a pistol from nowhere and shoots his opponent down. Imagine fake blood spurting all over the place, and this shocking surprise is concluded by a dramatic dying scene that lasts for three minutes due to all the elaborate Shakespearean quotes. And especially after declar-ing that “everything you just witnessed is historically correct”, the roar of laughter from the audience is about proportional to the amount of steam emanating from the ears of so-called professors and doctors in classical Archeological and Historical studies.

And then there’s also this male overcompensation thing about playing with swords I guess. It is often said that the difference between men and boys is the size of their toys. Well, things got pretty crazy at a cer-tain point. It went something like this. When the internet was still young, not all information was readily available in the comfort of your own warm home. Stuffy university attics had to be traversed to dig up ancient tomes that *might* contain a grainy black-and-white picture of that one thing that would impress and shake the re-enactment scene to its foundations. Or maybe that was what I sort of hoped at some point. But finally I did find some depictions of the Dacian falx. Rumoured to be the largest blade of its

time, it was a dreaded two-handed battle scythe used by Dacian shock troops to hack through Roman army formations. Immediately I began reconstructing the weapon, and according to my ‘exact’ calculations it would have been ridiculous-ly huge. We couldn’t wait to see those Roman re-enactors turn pale at the sight of our mighty tools of destruction and watch them flee in blind panic. After building two of these oversized blades that would have made a manga hero drool, I contacted a Rumanian archaeologist (Dacia was approxi-mately where Rumania is situated nowadays) He kindly provided me with an accurate archaeologi-cal drawing of an actual find. It turned out to be somewhat smaller than I had so precisely calcu-lated.. Ah. Yes, um, well, at least we made the effort. And we definitely had our laughs.

But now, it’s all history, just like the era that inspired us to perform those fights. Today, I rather let the young bloods clamour at the noise of steel on steel while I myself wander through a landscape of differ-ent sounds. It is the path of the bard that I walk with the members of this troupe called OMNIA. But I’ll never forget some of us once were warriors.

Old School ConcertBy Fans

The OMNIA “Old school gig” held at the Pim Jacobs theatre in Maarssen on last december 13th was a great experience for Luka, Jenny and Steve (as well as their guests) OMNIA went through a lot of their old “trio” repertoire and they played some completely new songs as try-outs aswell.

This editor overheard Steve saying (quote:) “this was the funniest gig we did in a looooooong time!, why do we need a drummer and a guitar player anyway?”...

And I’ve already heard that OMNIA will certainly do another one of these gigs somewhere in the future.

Page 34: The_Raven_Times_8_-_EN

Here is what you guys had to say about it! :

-One word: AWESOMESAUCE !

-Pim Jacobs Theater gives a real « PaganAttic » feeling

-I’ve enjoyed changing set-up of the band and the wonderful stories that come with the songs!

-Both the music and the humour in between the songs was AMAZING.

-I haven’t had such a great time in ages!

-It was absolutely excellent! I really would have hated to miss this!

-“...and I would like to end with the joyful fact that my boyfriend, who is isn’t an omniac, due to my enthusiastic but calm demeanour became interested enough and might join me to Nijmegen’s gig”.

-I know for sure I will never forget last night!

-It was so fabletastic! Every time Jenny stuck the first note on her grand piano it brought tears to my eyes.

-WOW what a wonderful time I’ve had!

-It was great, fantastic, humoristic and a whole lot more of terms like that. I am truly lost for words.

-OMNIA’s Old Skool Special gig last night was absolutely amazing, wonderful, it was a true party

-Experiencing one emotion after another.

Hypocras/Piment RecipeBy Kalin of Irfan

Dear friends,

I’m happy to share with you a recipe for a superb medieval sweetened and spiced red wine. This unique beverage from the medieval gastronomy was known as Piment or Hypocras and was probably the most popular drink at parties and banquets between 12th and 15th cen. The name “Piment” derived from the Medieval Latin “pigmentum” meaning dye, ingredient, drug or spice. And the name “Hypocras” comes from “Hippocrates’ sleeve”, the bag or strainer, through which the spiced wine was passed. Originally, Hypocras was made from red wine, sugar and oriental spices. Apparently, the recipe for Hypocras was brought to Europe from the Orient, following the Crusades and was regarded as having various medicinal or even aphrodisiac properties. Soon this highly prized sweetened and spiced red wine became extremely popular and was served at numerous parties and banquets all over Europe. Some say that Hypocras was the most preferable drink of the Breton knight and baron Gilles de Rais, known as well as the monstrous Bluebeard.

I believe that Hypocras is an ideal drink for a family or friendly party during the cold Winter season and I strongly recommend it to you since it is one of my favorite ancient alcohol beverages too.

Page 36: The_Raven_Times_8_-_EN

36 - The Raven Times 08 - February 2010

Ingredients:

2 litres red wine

175 g. brown sugar or alternatively, honey (It was thought that that sugar was uniquely for the lords and honey was for the common people)

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

¾ tablespoon ground ginger

1 cloves long pepper (Piper longum)

1 teaspoon Guinea grains (Aframomum melegueta)

1 teaspoon each ground cloves, grated nutmeg, marjoram (preferably fresh), ground cardamom, ground black pepper and a pinch of grated galingale (if available)

How to make it:

Crush to powder all the spices and herbs in a mortar and after that mix it all together. Meanwhile warm the red wine on a very low fire until it starts to steam (don’t let it boil). Add the sugar or the honey and allow it to dissolve. Then add half of the spicy mixture into the wine, taste it and slowly add more until achieve a flavour responds to your personal taste (But you will probably need most or all of the mixture to achieve a proper Medieval taste). Then simmer the whole mix for 10 minutes and strain it well through a clean cotton, linen or a towel (an old but clean t-shirt will do as well). You may do the straining several times in order to avoid any spice sediment until the wine is clear. Then bottle the Hypocras when it is cold and cork securely. Drink it within one week and serve it before or especially after a meal. It is even better when you drink it in a proper atmospheric place with your dear friends or family while listening to the music of Omnia, Faun, Valravn or Irfan! ;-)

Enjoy!

Warm greetings from Bulgaria,

Kalin Yordanov (Irfan)

If you have pictures of yourself, your family, friends, dog or goldfish wearing an OMNIA shirt while being at a beautiful place, doing something weird or of course being a cool kiddy like Kjeld: don’t hesitate and send 1 picture to

[email protected] (subject: OMNIA SHIRTPICTURE) and maybe you will find yourself (or your fam-ily, friends, dog or goldfish!) in the next edition of the Raven Times!

And last but not least, a picture which doesn’t contain a traveling band shirt, but it’s reeeaaaally cute:

This is Kjeld. When Kjeld grows up, he wants to be Steve, and for that, he deserves to be in the Raven Times!

Reinhard (from Germany) gave us a puzzle picture: look for the nine green iguanas in this beautiful setting in Costa Rica

Astrid (from the Netherlands) walks around in the Soesterduinen in a beautiful shirt, don’t you think? ;-)

Verena and Markus (from Germany) went to Florida for their honey moon and visited the southernmost point of the United States. Look at their cute OMNIA bag!

Fan questions & extra note for questions By Femke & band members

In previous editions of the RavenTimes fans were given the opportunity to ask OMNIA questions. Of course this opportunity still exists! Here’s a selection of questions from the last couple of months:

Grace (the Netherlands) asks:

What does a gig-less day look like? Do you sleep in? Jam a bit or go out and have a drink?

It’s a common misconception that being a professional musician means just getting to a venue in time, build up, play, do some fan stuff and then go home again to relax until the next gig.

I wish it was true. Of course I can only really speak for Steve and myself so I won’t give you time sched-ules but see how you would fit in sleeping in, drinks on terraces and jamming with all this stuff:

- writing and arranging new material

- arranging the band and crew logistics for performing and practicing.

- answering emails (est. around 400 per week)

- arranging bookings/contracts -bookkeeping (yes we pay tax as well)

- Producing a CD and/or DVD arranging studios technicians etc.

-making artwork for various goals , promo etc.

- and so on, and so on...

We try to relax after dinner with a nice DVD, a board game ,video game (Brutal Legend!) or by making music. But the last thing of course always ends up in us working, often until deep in the night...

Concerts are our highlights and actually the best thing about the whole job!

Page 40: The_Raven_Times_8_-_EN

40 - The Raven Times 08 - February 2010

Marco (Germany) asks:

After one of your gigs I noticed that while Steve speaks of improving the world the recipes in The Raven Times commonly use ingredients that are not completely vegan. So I started wondering, is any of you vegan? And if you are not, how do you avoid the cruel abuse of animals and why do you thinks products like milk, cheese and eggs belong in the bellies of mankind?

None of us is completely vegan. Steve and Jenny drink soy milk and use soy ‘sour cream’ and have ‘soy yoghurt’ instead of their dairy Varieties, but we do use butter, eggs and cheese (and honey). We are of course very concerned about animal welfare and only buy and eat certified Eco products. Steve and Luka now and then eat some meat as well, but also only if it is guaranteed Eco.

When making recipes for the Raven Times, we make it as accessible as possible, because it’s a fun thing. Besides, getting people to cook something vegetarian is already a big step for most of them. If you force extreme ideas on people they will just not go for it at all. Better to ‘ease’ them in by showing them cooking something veggie like the pumpkin soup is easy and delicious. For vegans like yourself it should be easy to spot the dairy stuff and add a soy or other equivalent instead of it, so we don’t comment about that.

As for why we think dairy products and eggs belong into human bellies: Well, who really knows what does belong in our bellies? We don’t even know if we belong on this planet. We just try to see what works for our body and taste buds, keeping a critical eye out for what the products do to the environment & ani-mals. It’s impossible to lead our life ‘on the road’ and only eat the ‘good stuff’ so to speak, but I always have my little packages of soy milk with me to have in my coffee before concerts, and I will never eat an egg that doesn’t have the right stamp on it (code 0 = eco) in hotels, even if I’m starving. For regular standards that’s already quite a big thing and I advise you not to criticize so easily the people who are trying to make a difference in this world.

That’s not the way; trying to convert humans to your ‘religion’ and judging everything by your standards is very dangerous and might give cool ideas like veganism a bad name. One of my best friends works for the Dutch association of Vegetarians and their goal is to make everybody in Holland eat at least one veg-etarian meal a week; for the animals, for the environment, for health. That’s a small step but something that is more likely to work than to want to make the whole world vegan. It’s just never gonna happen, maybe sad, but true.

Jolanda (NL) asks:

Do you like children? Or do you avoid having to hang around them?

Well, just plain facts will say it all: Steve is father (and Jenny stepmother) of 2: Damien Raven (17) and Myrthe Fortuna (15).

Luka is father and stepfather of 3: Yavanna (12), Kylian (9) and Branwyn (5).

Joe is father of Helen (26) and Shane (0, born on the 20th of January this year! See the news page of this RavenTimes). Tom is not a dad, but participates in a kiddie-camp every summer, where he entertains a bunch of kiddies around the age of 6/7 for a week. Voluntarily!...so, because we have so much experi-ence with children, you can probably guess that by now we all really hate kids! ;-)

Behind the tattoosBy Femke

Bas (NL) liked Stenny’s tattoo so much that it inspired him to create his own version of it. Shown here together with Steve’s arm.

The ancient art of Tattoo as a form of ritual which endows the wearer with a kind of inner energy has been known to our culture for many millennia .As you probably know Jenny and Steve Sic also love tat-toos as a form of permanent spiritual jewellery, and they wear them with pride. This has inspired quite a few people to also have their skin decorated, so... In the previous Raven Times we’ve asked you to send us some of your OMNIA tattoos! We have so far received a whole pile of beautiful tattoos. While all of them were absolutely gorgeous in their own right, we had too much material for this edition of RT so we’ve had to select the ones that really have something uniquely “OMNIA” about them. So don’t be sad if your tattoo didn’t make it into this Raven Times and don’t think we are ignoring you, nor your tattoo, they remain as pretty as ever, so stray proud of them! ;-)

Onwards, let’s show you some tattoos!

Page 42: The_Raven_Times_8_-_EN

Maria (NL) will now have the autographs of the band members with her wherever she goes.
