A poetic prayerin these difficult days.

Away away and do not stay, the corona virus has hit us today.

No one knows how long it will be here, but quite a while we do fear.

We have to keep ourselves apart, and to not see my family breaks myheart.

Most stores are closed and are darkand grey,we can’t even visit church and pray.

Our motorways are traffic free, both day and night feels very eerie.

With the sun shining and trees in bloom,it’s difficult to imagine the world ingloom.

We clap for all carers and the N.H.S.,please Lord deliver us from this distress.

At this time when our churches are closed for public worship, we will notbe able to receive Holy Communion physically, which will be a painfulthing for many of us. The tradition of the church has been for people tomake an act of Spiritual Communion when they are prevented fromreceiving Holy Communion. Below is a form of words which express ourfaith in Jesus and in his presence at Holy Communion and invite him tounite himself with us:

Act of Spiritual Communion:

My Jesus,I believe that youare present in the Most Holy Sacrament.I love you above all things, and desire to receive you into my soul .Since I cannot at this momentreceive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.I embrace you as if you were already thereand unite myself wholly to you.

O God, our Shield and our Defender,Guide and protect my neighbourin this time of health emergency;Deliver them from all harm andmay your love and care evergrow in this place.Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord.Amen.

Merciful God, we entrust to yourtender care those who are ill orin pain, knowing that wheneverdanger threatens your everlastingarms are there to hold them safe.Comfort and heal them, and restorethem to health and strength;through Jesus Christ our Lord.Amen

Up Hatherley Parish CouncilI’ve been having a think about how the world (and our community) haschanged as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. What is emerging forme is a list of the positive things that have happened – many of whichwe should carry on doing (or not doing!). It is also clear to me that the systems we havedeveloped to support vulnerable members of our community were needed before thepandemic and will be needed in the future.

With beautiful Spring weather, most airplanes grounded, traffic reduced, schools closed, employees furloughed and many more people walking, running and cycling, there is now achance to appreciate the environment that we live in and think about how we could protect itfor future generations.

What follows economically is going to be extremely hard for many people. With a reduc-tion in donations as well as increased hardship, we are already seeing food poverty formany people who were previously able to manage. Continued employment, job protection, furlough payments, small business help and protected pensions are not there for every-one. Many people in our community are going to be hit hard financially, still liable for rentand mortgage payments but without the income to support them. In our big cities, actionwas taken to accommodate street homeless people in hotels, but there is now a sec-ond wave of people sleeping rough – those who could only afford their accommodationwhen they had employment. This will be the situation in towns and cities throughout thecountry.

There has also been what one commentator termed a “redistribution of esteem”. Somepeople and corporations have really stepped up to the challenge of the pandemic – go-ing the extra mile to help. Some companies have treated their employees abysmally. Wenow have a greater appreciation of the NHS – but also of care workers, shop workers, delivery drivers, refuse collectors, pharmacists and postal workers. Will we continue tovalue the people that helped us the most in times of crisis?

So, the question forming in my mind is how do we hang on to the positives, how do weavoid returning to old habits if they were harmful and how do we put in place a systemfor supporting vulnerable members of our community.

These are my first thoughts:

Gloucestershire Police in conjunction with local authorities have created the frameworkfor an organisation which outreaches to vulnerable citizens and directs volunteers towhere they can help. Could this be the future for Neighbourhood Watch so we have atstreet level an organisation that watches out for one another and connects to peoplewho are isolated – particularly those who don’t use social media or the internet?

One of the really positive features of recent weeks for those of us lucky enough to beable to take regular exercise has been the chance to talk to people you didn’t know be-fore (at a distance of 2 metres). Even those who are self- isolating at home have had theexperience of people telephoning them to find out how they are. Loneliness and iso-lation existed before the pandemic and will continue afterwards. We really need to con-tinue with kindness and thoughtfulness on an ongoing basis.

Page 11: TheParishofSaintsPhilipandJames UpHatherley ParishMagazine

11

At our May meeting, UHPC agreed a £1000 donation to the Mayor’s fund for Food-banks. Members agreed that if more was required then we would give further support.A big shout out to Morrisons who have gone the extra mile to help foodbanks week inand week out.

Due to the Lockdown restrictions, the Parish Council’s May meeting was held as a Vir-tual meeting (on Zoom) and we opened the meeting up to the public, enabling us tomake some decisions. We should not rule out the possibility of virtual meetingseven after Lockdown restrictions ease. Whilst face to face contact is preferable formany, a virtual meeting can be easier both physically and mentally for others.

For those who are lucky enough to be able to work from home, the question is couldthis be something you continue to do – for some or nearly all of your workinghours? Many employers have put in place arrangements for home working where pos-sible and have acknowledged that in future they may only need employees tocommute to work occasionally, so as to benefit from face to face/team contact. Thiscould make a significant impact on the number of cars on the road, particularly at peaktimes, if start and finish times can be staggered.

How to get shopping done or find certain items such as toilet paper, pasta, tinnedbeans, flour, yeast and cleaning products been a challenge of the Lockdown. Withpubs and restaurants closed and limited take-away services, there has been aboom in home cooking, but also depressingly, CBC has reported a big increase infood waste. On the upside, there has been an increased uptake of box schemes forunpackaged fruit and vegetables, greater interest in growing fruit and vegetables andsome very enterprising local businesses offering food and meal delivery. We shouldcelebrate this local enterprise and continue to place our orders with these companiesafter the national and multi-national big names re-open.

With refuse/recycling centres only just re-opening, we have faced a problem with whatto do with the things that we don’t want and cannot dispose of via kerbside collectionsor neighbourhood recycling facilities (Morrisons). For anyone with limited space, this is a significant problem. The challenge is to think about how we might reduce theamount of waste that we produce and how to re-use, re-purpose or re-cycle. Duringlockdown, there have been numerous instances of people placing items such asbooks, furniture and toys outside their homes for neighbours to take and, as restrictionsease, there will be increased use of Freecycling sites and Social networks for sellingand recycling. Many of us have had a chance to do a Spring Clean, so before we jointhe queue at the Local recycling centre, we should find out if our neighbours need any-thing we have finished with.

Judging by posts on “Nextdoor” more of us are appreciating wildlife, flowers and treeswhilst walking, as well as clearer skies, only occasional vapour trails from planes andstarry skies at night too. Our Parish Council wants to embark on a tree planting mis-sion, has taken delivery of some oak saplings and wants to develop some plantingschemes for householders, schools, businesses and public bodies with everyone beingencouraged to plant whatever is appropriate for the space that they have and withrespect to trees – nurture any trees that are planted so that they thrive. Stay Safe andAlert – and resist the temptation to make an unnecessary journey, particularly if youare worried about your eyesight! Sarah Bamford (Chair)

Gardening NewsThere will be some who read this and think that I have lostthe plot and there will perhaps be others who know me.

Well, what a very strange time we are living in? There is realjoy in the fact that nature bashes on oblivious to the constraints oflockdown life. Indeed our new found circumstances have encouragedmany to try their hand at gardening, to experience the ups and downs ofthe gardeners journey. They have joined the game and experienced themischief, that has seen brutal frosts scything things to the ground withoutmercy. One man recorded that he had lost 45 tomato plants, but thatundeterred he would replant safe in the naivety he would not be beatenagain.

As last month and greatly encouraged by new generation of gardeners Irecommend that you continue to play. Do things that the packet doesn’trecommend, try parsnips in pots or have a go at cuttings. Tip out thecontents of the free seeds that were stuck to the front cover of a ten yearold magazine and throw them into the border.

Try things in difficult places, mix vegetables and flowers in the border, usebeans as decorative height. Notice the strength of colour in beetrootleaves and the stalks of rainbow chard. I could of course deliver all of thethings that are normal for June and encourage you to watch out for pestsand have you net the vegetables to deter the birds. I could tell you that topick of leaves of roses showing signs of black spot or mildew. I couldadvise you to spray and feed and to keep on top of the watering. I couldtell you to sow winter pansy seed and sweet William, wallflowers and evenspring cabbage. You can do all of that. There are plants about to buy too, without putting yourself at too much risk.

But really there are just two things that I want to encourage. The first is tocarry on planting and the second is to watch and savour as life weaves it’smagic.

And finally celebrate the magnificence of the opportunity to bear witness.

Keep safe and Happy Gardening.

Father’s Mark…..With all the recent warm weather, remembering that I am writing this article inmid May, peoples’ thoughts will naturally turn to summer holidays. Many I’msure will have made holiday preparations months ago, but will now beconcerned and taking advice on whether they are still able to go, cancel orpostpone. Under the existing circumstances travelling abroad is fraught withvarious obstacles and limited to very few countries.

If the government continue to relax the present restrictions over the summerand with the financial position many will find themselves in this year, a‘Staycation’ (a portmanteau of "stay" and "vacation") may be the best way ofspending and renewing time with family. It would certainly avoid some ofthe stress associated with travel, such as jet lag, packing, long drives, or waitsat airports and reduce the environmental impact of carbon emissionsassociated with air travel.

Staycations achieved popularity in the U.S. during the financial crisis of 2007–2010 and in the UK in 2009 as a weak pound sterling made overseas holidayssignificantly more expensive.

As an eight-year-old child I remember enjoying a holiday to ‘Butlins’ with myfamily (when my singing won me a first prize of vouchers and ice cream!) andfor many years summer and winter camps with the Scouts (Land & Sea) whichinspired me later to offer service as a Scout Master and Chaplain as an adult.

Camping in tents or if you’re not comfortable with the idea of ‘roughing-it’, then‘Glamping’ (a portmanteau of "glamorous" and "camping") may be right upyour street. You would be mistaken however, if you thought the concept ofGlamping was a new one. In the 16th century, the Scottish Earl of Athollprepared a lavish experience in the Highlands for the visiting King James Vand his mother. Here, the Duke pitched lavish tents and filled them with all theprovisions of his own home palace.

But probably the most extravagant example of palatial tent-living in history wasthe Field of the Cloth of Gold, a diplomatic summit in 1520 between Henry VIIIof England and Francis I of France in northern France. Some 2,800 tentsand marquees were erected, and fountains ran with red wine! Now that’sGlamping!!!

Page 17: TheParishofSaintsPhilipandJames UpHatherley ParishMagazine

17

Yet for those who have ever been camping in a tent they are a visualreminder of either a miserable time in a wet, inhospitable environmentin the middle of nowhere, where there were no ‘proper facilities’ andnothing to do; or happy days spent with family, friends or, in former times, part of a same-sex youth organisation, sleeping under the stars whetherthat be the back garden, holiday camp, Scout camp or foreign internationaljamboree, and having the time of one’s life.

Tents or Tabernacles feature in a great deal of the Old Testament. Theyhave housed everything from the portable earthly dwelling place ofYahweh, the God of Israel to being the blueprint for synagogues, inspiration in the building of some churches and the reservation of theSacrament.

All of this talk of tents and hospitality reminds me of the famous 15th centuryicon by the Russian painter Andrei Rublev called The Trinity also calledThe Hospitality of Abraham.

The icon is based on a story from the Book of Genesis (18:1–8), anddepicts three angels, representing the Trinity, “one God in threepersons” – Father, Son and Holy Spirit, who visited Abraham’s tent at theOak of Mamre and is full of doctrinal symbolism representing aninterpretation of the Holy Trinity whose feast we celebrate this month.

It is one of the few feasts in the Christian calendar that celebratedoctrine rather than an event. The Holy Trinity is the embodiment ofspiritual unity, peace, harmony, mutual love and humility. As such itexpresses the way Christians, and indeed all might, should relate to Godi.e. worship God the Father, follow the example set by God the Son andGod the Holy Spirit lives within us. But the relationship between thepersons of the Trinity can also be seen as a recipe for the best sort ofhuman relationships. These are relationships in which individuality isbalanced with relationship; relationships whose basis is mutual loveand perfect communication, “The relationship that exists within theGodhead is the basis for unity in every human relationship, be it marriage, family or church.” (Patrick Henry Reardon).

Here lies, for all of us, the divine relational goal of which to strive andimitate.

Happy camping!

Father Mark
