The first week of August the parish staff attended a workshop on evangelization. We

have been working with a group called Evangelical Catholic (EC) to evaluate and

strengthen the call that Jesus gives to all his followers in Matthew’s gospel, “Go and

make disciples.” It has been exciting to consider this call of Jesus as the work of the

Catholic Church and our parish. Over the next few months and years we will be looking

for ways to be more direct in our response.

The starting point of this focus is the heart of the gospel. Jesus calls us to himself in

love and then sends us out to make His love known in the world. This calling and

sending of Jesus should permeate our lives personally and every activity in our parish.

This is the foundation we will build on as we consider evangelization and parish life.

With this column I want to thank everyone for their prayers for our staff during the

workshop and set the stage for future homilies and presentations where this will be explored

more and more.

The presenters of EC asked us to consider what an active Catholic parish looks like.

Our first thoughts were of a community with a lot of people participating at Mass and

the various programs we offer, a community with a lot of people volunteering. But they

asked us to envision something else as well. As good as it is to have an active parish

campus, the majority of a person’s life exists in other settings such as family and work.

Responding to the call of Jesus means that His love motivates and guides our actions in

all the places of our lives. An active Catholic parish is one that has parishioners filling

their homes and work and community with the love of Christ.

The Church exists so that we are fed. Jesus gives us his Body and Blood and speaks

to our hearts, enriching our lives and leading us to heaven. But Jesus is not interested

only in those who come in the doors of the church. He calls us so that he might send us.

The Work of Jesus at Holy Souls

Jesus wants to feed all those who do not yet come to him and it is the mission of each

of us to lead others to Christ.

But, sometimes we have the wrong idea about this. Evangelization does not mean

becoming a street preacher or prodding your neighbor to change their lives. Jesus is

patient and loving and kind and if we ever lead another to Christ it is because we are

patient and loving and kind. Evangelization means being rooted in Christ in your own

life so that Jesus may reach through you into the lives of those around you. The first

step in evangelization is not your words to your neighbor. Your first step in evangelization

is your step closer to Jesus.

In the words of EC, your mission starts with your connection to Christ. And so, the

work of evangelization is not just meant for someone else. Our parish is only truly

active when we become instruments of Jesus in everyday life. Our parish is active

when it is life with Jesus that shapes our thoughts and actions.

With time we will understand every aspect of our parish life as an opportunity to be

true disciples. I know many people hunger for something deeper in their life of faith

and I am excited about the work of Jesus at Holy Souls. I pray that each of us will be

open to respond with generosity so that there is no limit to the work of God in our

community

The Parish Choir is open to all Parishioners and will begin rehearsals on September 9at 7pm.

The Parish Handbell Choir is likewise open to all Parishioners and will begin rehearsalson Monday, September 14 at 5:30pm.

The Parish Advanced Children’s Choir is for children in the 5th – 8th Grades, byaudition, and meets each Tuesday at 3:05pm beginning with the School Year.

Message from our newDirector of Evangelization & Faith Formation

Hello, I am Samantha Denefe, the new Director ofEvangelization and Faith Formation. Let me begin bytelling you a little about myself. I was born and raised inSpringfield, Missouri, but came to Arkansas to attendHendrix College. While in college I met the love of mylife, Matthew Denefe. Like me he was studying Biology/Pre-Med but at University of Central Arkansas HonorsCollege. Unlike Matt, I felt like I had a calling to followChrist in a way that led me away from medicine. Hehowever, feels called to become a doctor and this Augusthe begain medical school at UAMS. In August 2013 wemarried. Nine months later we welcomed our daughterFaith Ann into our life. As a family we love to spend timeon do-it-yourself projects around the house, watching our backyard chickens play, goingcamping and hiking, or out on a body of water. Give us a river to float or a lake to boatand we are a happy happy family!

As many of you know the great Anne Thomisee has retired. It will be very difficult tofollow in her footsteps at Holy Souls, but rest assured her and I met numerous times priorto her retirement to help ease the transition. Many of Anne’s tasks have been shiftedaround, but I will still be in charge of the “faith formation” element of her job. I willcoordinate PRE, and Sacrament Prep. We have also laid plans for me to eventually takeover RCIA after shadowing Anne for a year. But as you have probably noticed this job hasa dual title: Evangelization and Faith Formation.

Let me throw some statistics at you: according the Pew Research Center, only 30% ofCatholics who are raised Catholics are still “practicing.” Their definition of practice isattending Mass at least once a month. Where are all of our brothers and sisters going? I’msure every one of you knows someone, probably even have a family member, who has leftthe Church. Furthermore new statistics shows that at any given parish only 4% of registeredparishioners contribute to 80% of the volunteer hours, and financial contributions! Hereat Holy Souls I have no idea if that is the case or not, regardless all of us need a deeperconversion to Christ and that is what Evangelization is all about.*

Evangelization can feel like a dirty word to us Catholics. But it is time for us toreclaim this word! Evangelization is simply building a personal relationship with Jesus,and helping others to do the same. Evangelization is having your Faith in Jesus comealive! I want to help you take ownership of your faith, making faith more about relationship:relationship with Christ and relationship with others. While having knowledge of the faithis important, we MUST have Christ in our hearts. To help facilitate these relationships Iwill be coordinating and facilitating spiritual growth opportunities outside of the Mass.We are currently in the early planning stages, but some things we are looking to do isimplement small group home based scripture studies, creating a hospitality/welcome team,adding additional worship and liturgy services in the middle of the week and being opento adding other events as the Lord leads us.

I’m excited to be here and share the love of Jesus with you. I feel so blessed that Godhas called me here to walk alongside you as both you and I grow in our relationship withJesus together. I promise to intently pray for our parish, and to always discern where Godis leading us. Know that I pray for Holy Souls every day and look forward to getting toknow each one of you!

We will once again begin a new Grief Support Group on October 6th from 5:30 –6:30 PM at the Benedict House, Sr. Henrietta Room. Facilitators are Dr. Mary Ann Stafford,a parishioner, and Laura G. Humphries, CT, Parish Life Coordinator. This will be thefourth group that has been offered at Holy Souls. Mary Ann is an educator and trainedfacilitator, Laura is certified in Thanatology, the study of death, dying and bereavement;they worked together, researched and planned the grief ministry. People grieve in differentways, and there is a difference between grieving and mourning, and the process takestime – perhaps several years. Stafford says, “Mourning is allowing the grief to be expressedexternally, such as sharing experience with others who have been on the same path, writingin journals, drawing, social interaction, ritual and memorials, reading, and prayer. A lot ofpeople try to be strong and hide their emotions from others, but this just makes it moredifficult to heal.”

We invite all who are grieving the loss of a loved one to come to the group. Registrationis required; if you want to join the group please call Laura Humphries at 663-8632 oremail at lhumphries@holysouls.org. The Benedict House is located on H Street acrossfrom the school. The materials used for the fall session will be The New Day Journalwritten by Dominican Sister Mauryeen O’Brien who is coordinator for the bereaved atthe Family Life Office of the Archdiocese of Hartford. Activities include reading,discussion, prayer, scripture, music, and journal writing. No one is required to share buttalking about your grief is one of the best ways to get through it.

The Church operates on a fiscal year beginning July 1 and ending June 30; consequently,the financial report includes the operating results for a twelve month period as well asthe operating budget – approved by the Parish and Finance Councils - for the 2014-15fiscal year.

Note 1: Contributions to Other ProgramsContributions to other programs include funds to provide financial aid to Holy Souls School families ($59,308),church contributions to community agencies granted by the Social Concerns Commission and other charitablegiving ($29,050) and contributions to the Central Deanery High School Tuition Aid Fund ($17,655).

Note 2: Parish Expense & Church MinistriesParish expense and church ministry expense includes the cost of Evangelical Catholic, publishing the churchnewsletter, operation of the church nursery, mailing of collection envelopes, postage along with expenses forreligious education programs, music, youth and CYM activities, parish life activities and other ministries.

We will continue to be diligent in being good stewards of the funds that are entrusted to usduring the 2015-16 fiscal year. Holy Souls Welcomes Susie WilliamsAs Facilities and Special Events

CoordinatorHoly Souls Parish welcomes Susie Williams to our

staff as Facilities and Special Events Coordinator. MaryCarman retired the end of August. She has begun hernext journey in life . . . she will be putting on a “granny”hat in her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.

Susie is the mother of four children: Jordan, Corbin,and Cayman Carlisle, and Addison Williams. She is thewife of Jan Williams, her blessed and supportive partnerin this journey. Being an Arkansas native, she has been ableeding Razorback Red all of her life. Susie grew up inNorth Little Rock in the Immaculate Conception parishand attended Mount St Mary Academy. She has held an array of jobs in between havingchildren and raising her family over the last 26 years. She worked in banking, retail,advertising, and for the last 11 years as the office manager and controller of Orbit FluidPower Company. Since leaving Orbit in 2014, she has been building custom reclaimedfurniture from her home. It is a job she really enoys and will continue to do in her sparetime. Her family lives in the midtown area and are parishioners at Holy Souls Church.

She is thrilled to be joining the staff here. She said, “I have big shoes to fill in MaryCarman’s place but hopefully I can make a strong addition to the parish family.”

The school also had 2 HVAC systems replaced. The music room was refurbished withfresh paint and custom bookshelves.

Thanks to the Men’s Club for funding the painting of the food service line area andthe hand rails and loading dock doors of the Allen Center. We are in the process ofinstalling a key card lock system on the Parish Hall doors and a new camera securitysystem for the Nursery doors. There are several projects to be completed this fall with

Back in our school days, many of us longed to be chosen. We wanted to be picked,preferred and called out. We wanted to be more than just a face in the crowd. For if wewere chosen, it meant that someone knew we had some characteristic that made ususeful and special. Right or wrong, maybe we sometimes still feel that way today. ButJesus calls us to something more than superficial popularity. Jesus calls us to follow him,beckons us to a relationship that makes us more than what we can become on our own.Jesus calls us to a life that exists only “through him and with him and in him,” a life ofgrace and mercy that is beyond measure and yet right in front of us, awaiting our “yes.”

If we follow the call of Jesus our way is laid out for us; we do, however, have to makea conscious decision to become followers of Christ. We have to pray and make sure thatChrist is a very big part of our daily lives and let him guide us in all our decisions, not justthe big ones, but the ones that seem insignificant. If Christ is always uppermost in ourminds, we will do the right thing; we will always stand up for the right thing. God loves usand he wants us to be on his team now and for always. Not because we are in the “incrowd” but because we are his children and he wants us to know that no matter what wedo there is always a place for us at his table. We have to be open to him and his love andnot turn our backs on him when we feel the road is a little hard. With Jesus all things arepossible; without him there is nothing worth having.

Summer has come and gone, though it just seems like we were preparing for our floattrip to the Buffalo River. Just as soon as Riverfest was over (our CYM has worked theOfficial Merchandise booth for the past nine years), we left for Jasper, Arkansas. On theway we stopped to hike at Hawksbill Crag (Whitaker Point) where the rain cooperated bystopping so we thoroughly enjoyed God’s beauty. Most of us had never been there, andthe view is breathtaking. We settled into our usual place, the Buffalo Lodge, and enjoyedthe cool temperatures and good cooking. Our float trip was quite eventful with manyspills, a lost oar, a dented canoe, scrapes and bruises. Overall, it was a great time, thoughthe water was moving like we’d never experienced before. Thanks to Dan Beadle’sexperience and abilities, we all survived! On the last full day, we went to one of ourfavorite spots, Lost Valley, for a nice hike, swimming, and spelunking. Since the priestswere on retreat at the same time, we weren’t able to have Mass on the porch, however,

we did have prayer services and prayed the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.

Mission Trip to McGehee

CYM’s helping at Arkansas Food Bank.

Several organized service projects took place

this summer through CYM. Several youth went

to Helping Hand a couple of times. They

unloaded trucks and organized food items,

unpacked summer clothes, and packed away

winter things. We also spent a few hours at the

Arkansas Food Bank unpacking and sorting

donated food. It’s always more fun when you

are with your friends and helps our kids to give

of their summer time to benefit those less

fortunate.

We were hoping to have a mission trip in

June, but the timing was bad. July was better for

those interested teens, so twelve of us gathered

and headed south to McGehee, Arkansas. We

worked three days where we did yardwork and

some minor painting at St. Mary’s Rectory and

Parish Hall. We also did some ecumenical work

and painted all the outside trim at the Church of

the Nazarene. Sr. Laura joined us as did Rose

Farquhar (CYM mom), and we endured very hot

days, the lack of air conditioning at the Friary, a

three foot cottonmouth snake in the carport, and

the cramped relocation accommodations at the

Rectory. Once again, the group dynamics of

getting along, respectfulness, good attitudes, and

the coming together of Christians of different

faiths made it a successful trip. One of the St.

Mary’s parishioners, Darrell Wrobel, generously

volunteers his time each summer to make our

CYMers at SteubenvilleMid America in July

stay comfortable, helps with supplies, and keeps us on task work-wise. Fr. Erik and

Deacon Mario came down to check on our progress and for moral support. Later Fr. Erik

said Mass for us as well as some parishioners who had come for an impromptu Mass. The

week was fruitful and rewarding.

Now that I’ve returned from the Evangelical Catholic Camp, I feel excited to begin

implementing ministry changes. I hope this will in turn lead our kids to seek deeper

relationships with Jesus and enable them to become better disciples. Pray that the Holy

Spirit will lead me, the adult volunteers, and our youth leaders to our Catholic calling.

Holy Sews, Inc.: No LimitsOur Ministry Extends as Far as the Heart Can Reach

When this ministry began in 2008, our

initial goal was to place our layettes into

every hospital in Arkansas. Seven years later,

not only are our layettes distributed state-

wide, but we are now in 17 states and in 75

hospitals. We have recently expanded to

placing our layettes in funeral homes in Little

Rock, Benton, Bryant, North Little Rock,

and across the state. We have a chapter in

Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, and our

layettes have been delivered to Switzerland

and Honduras. Wherever there is a need,

we will fulfill that need.

It is very clear to us that the Holy Spirit guides our ministry. Recently, the head of

our Dallas-Ft. Worth Chapter, Jennifer Kuncl, shared the following experience:

“The Holy Spirit is at it again in Dallas. I just left Michael’s. We were low

on white and yellow ribbon and since they had a 30% off purchase coupon,

I decided to stock up on quite a few colors. Of course I was telling the cashier

about Holy Sews. She burst into tears. One of their cashiers received a

layette two weeks ago after losing her baby in an automobile accident. My

cashier turned out to be the store manager covering her shift. So, in honor of

Colton Louis, Michael’s has donated nearly $200 worth of ribbon. Wow.”

We also recently heard from the coordinator of the ShareHope Program at NE

Baptist Hospital in Jonesboro:

“I am so overwhelmed! The baby layettes are wonderful. The ones that you

have provided will be perfect! I’m so happy that you reached out to us.”

And from a mother who has experienced four miscarriages:

“What a blessing you all are. I have lost four precious babies and you all

clothed each of them in the sweetest things for me to cradle them in. Being

able to keep the clothes I saw and loved on them in is such an incredible

blessing. I will forever be thankful for the service you provide. Y’all serve in

a time that families need these simple things the most. We’re lost and broken

by our loss, but the blessings you provide last forever. Thank you a million

times.”

Our St. Mary’s Holy Sews Chapter went to the County Fair in Oneonta, NY, and

Mary Laden, its coordinator, gave the following report:

“Thought you would be interested to know that our group was able to put

up a Holy Sews tri-fold poster display at our County Fair this week. We

knowing how to sew. You will be

Light the Night on Thursday, October

15, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. on the steps

of the Arkansas State Capitol. We

will be observing Pregnancy and

Infant Loss Remembrance Day. Remember, there is no foot too small that it cannot

leave an imprint on this world.

SACRAMENT OF

RECONCILIATION

Saturdays from 2:45 to 3:45pm and Wednesdays

before First Friday from 4:30 to 5:00pm or call the

church office for an appointment.

BAPTISM

Baptisms are scheduled on an individual basis.

Please call the church office for more information.

CHURCH VISITSOn Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, & Friday the

church is open for visits from 7a.m. to 3 p.m.

Please use chapel doors after 9 a.m. On Wednes-

day, the church is open from 8am till after the

5:30pm Mass.

SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE

Contact the church office a minimum of six

months in advance.

HOSPITAL STAYS

Please call the church office if you or someone

you know is in the hospital. We want to visit you

and pray for you while you are in the hospital.

NURSERY

The Nursery is available in the Parish Hall for

your young children (age 5 and younger) for all

regular weekend Masses.

If you need to nurse your child during Mass, you

may use the Gathering Room in Church. Please

ask an usher to unlock the door for you.

Youth MinistryT

The Shrine of Our Lady of the Holy Souls has niches where the photos of our de-

ceased loved ones are placed. The chapel is a place of prayer for our loved ones,

When you visit the shrine, you may also light a candle in remembrances of deceased

loved one. The candle holder is located in front of the stained glass window as you

enter the shrine.
