Direct Drive Top Choice for 3663

Leading UK foodservice distributor 3663(spelling “FOOD” on the telephonekeypad) has chosen Thermo King directdrive units not once, but twice this year.

Early in 2003, 3663 took delivery of sixalternator driven A-1050 units fitted toDAF 14 tonne trucks for its Frozen &Chilled delivery fleet – the first A-1050sto go on the road in the UK. This wasfollowed later in the year for an orderfor 15 V-500 MAX units, fitted toMercedes Sprinters and used to carryfrozen and chilled goods on 3663’semergency delivery operation, whereextra supplies of goods are delivered tocustomers’ premises at a moment’snotice.

Graham Rennie, Fleet Controller at 3663says: “We prefer direct drive overtraditional diesel refrigeration units, asthey are more environmentally friendly, and quieter—an important factor asmost of our deliveries are in urbanareas, including many near office blocks,so it is very important to minimisenoise and emissions.”

“The A-1050 is perfect for these types ofdeliveries,” he continues. “The fridgeunit makes hardly any noise above thesound of the engine, and automaticallycuts out when the engine is switchedoff whilst deliveries are made - makingthe whole process much easier andquieter.”

With an average of 20-25 deliveries pervehicle per day, efficiency oftemperature pull-down and recovery tomaintain temperatures down to -25ºC isalso a very important factor.

“We are confident the A-1050 willperform well,” continues Graham

Rennie. “In initial tests for example, the unit pulled down to -15ºC veryquickly, after only 12 miles of driving.”

The A-1050 has been designed withThermo King’s unique “frequencyinverter technology,” which enables thealternator driven unit to provide highrefrigeration capacity effectivelyindependent of the engine speed, unlikeconventional alternator driven units.

The result is fast pull-down andrecovery, and efficient, consistenttemperature control – making it suitablefor the transport of even the mostdelicate of perishable goods. The unitis backed up by electric stand-byoperation when the vehicle engine isnot in use.

3663 chose the Thermo King V-500refrigeration units because, according toGraham Rennie, “Thermo King providedthe best size unit for the capacity thatwe were looking for, on this size ofvehicle.”

Launched last year as part of ThermoKing’s direct drive range, the V-500series features Thermo King’s exclusiveTCC (Triple Cooling Capacity) system, which offers optimised performance, with three condenser fan speed levelsthat are automatically matched to therequirements—resulting in maximumefficiency, reduced fuel consumption andminimal noise levels. The V-500 MAX isideal for trucks from 3 - 6.5 metreslong.

3663 has committed itself to anenvironmental mission statement thatsets out the company’s aim tominimise the impact of all aspects ofits operation on the environment

through a programme of continualimprovement. For this the companyhas won several National and Europeanenvironmental awards.

3663 has chosen Thermo Kings’ A-1050 and V-500.

Three of the new trailers in RTR’s recent fleet expansion.

Fifty Thermo King units for RTR Fleet Expansion

RTR, or Refrigerated Trailer RentalsHolland B.V., of Barendrecht (TheNetherlands), recently expanded its fleetof hire vehicles for temperature controlledtransport with fifty new trailers, all fittedwith Thermo King SLe series refrigerationunits.

The Thermo King SLe refrigeration unitsare compatible with installations such astemperature loggers, and work with theirown Thermo King DAS data managementsystem. All the units are also covered by aThermo King maintenance contract.

RTR’s vehicle fleet numbers around 330temperature controlled trailers – around280 of which are stationed in the

Netherlands and 50 in Belgium – and agood 90% of them are fitted with ThermoKing refrigeration units. For some 20years, the company has specialised inshort- and long-term hire of trailers forconditioned transport, and has establisheditself as one of the leaders in thissegment of the hire market. RTR is alsoinvolved in leasing, buying and sellingnew and used temperature-controlledtrailers. It has its own maintenance unit tomaintain and repair bodies and chassis, and works with tyre specialists onmaintaining and inspecting tyres.

The new custom-designed trailers are usedon short- and long-term hire, with somestationed at Barendrecht, and others at

the company’s Belgian branch in Antwerp. All have two rails in the roof and two inthe floor for fixing loads in place, and tierails are fitted in the sidewalls. The trailerscan also be fitted with options such asbulkheads or pallet boxes.

Some of the trailers were supplied bySchmitz, who build both chassis andbodywork in-house, and some by Chereauand Sor Iberica, who built their ownbodies onto Pacton chassis for this RTRorder. For all these trailers, RTR opted forSAF axles as standard, combined with EBSin most vehicles.

Thermo King is the top choice for TMF’s trailer refrigeration.

French company TMF (Traction MichelFrejaville), based in Servian near Béziersin the south of France, has once againchosen Thermo King to supply itsrefrigeration units.

Specialising in temperature-controlledtransport, TMF nowadays does most of itsmass distribution transport in therefrigeration sector.

With nearly all its units being supplied byThermo King, TMF provides its clients withtop-notch service.

“We replace our semi-trailers every fiveyears, which means that our equipment isalways either new or nearly new. OurChereau and Lamberet semi-trailers havealways been fitted with Thermo King units

– either SL-200s and SL-300s or elseSpectrum multi-temperature systems.

“It’s a fact that mass distribution posesspecific demands. The Spectrum unitsallow us to deliver goods which need tobe kept at different temperatures toseveral large supermarkets. Even adifference of just two or three degrees iscrucial when you’re transporting fruit orplants,” says Michel Frejaville, thecompany’s General Manager.

With its 120 semi-trailer trucks and 10straight trucks equipped with 130 ThermoKing units, the company undertakes some280 journeys each day, or 6,000 to 7,000journeys in a month.

Agencies located in Agen, Toulouse,

Béziers, Montpellier and Avignon allowlarge supermarkets such as Système Uand Carrefour to get their deliveries ingood time and in top condition.

“We work with very demanding clients. It’sup to us to provide them with the qualityand service they expect of a haulagecompany. So we give them flawlessequipment and our guarantee that thecold chain will be maintained.”

“With Thermo King we don’t need toworry about the quality or reliability of theequipment. In addition, we opted forThermo King’s service package, whichallows us to anticipate refrigeration unitoverhauls and maintenance. This gives uspeace of mind and gives our clients extrasecurity,” concludes Michel Frejaville.

TMF chooses Thermo King

The supermarket industry has seen manychanges in recent years, but one thing thathas stayed the same is the need forcontinuous improvement in temperaturecontrolled transport solutions.

Ensuring that temperature controlledproducts are kept at the correct temperaturethroughout their journey is essential forsupermarket transport fleets, to ensure thatthe quality of temperature sensitive goods ismaintained. At the same time, this needs tobe balanced with maximising costeffectiveness, and dealing with increasinglegislative pressure to minimise noise andpollution emissions to the environment.

The Thermo King range of transporttemperature control products has beendesigned to help supermarkets meet theseneeds. There is a unit to cater for everytype of operation: from home delivery fleetsof small vans, multi-drop urban distributiontrucks to store branches, to trailers for long-distance trunking from RDCs – with singleand multi-temperature versions available foreach. Throughout each product range,Thermo King’s extensive Research &Development programs ensure the mostflexible, cost effective, efficient andenvironmentally friendly operation availablein the industry.

A wide SPECTRUM of multi-temperature solutionsOne major development in the past fewyears is the growth in the market for multi-temperature distribution, giving operatorsthe flexibility to carry frozen and chilled, oreven ambient products at the same time. This can have a significant effect onefficiency—resulting in fewer trips beingmade to deliver the same products.

Thermo King have long been market leadersin developing multi-temperature transportsolutions. In 2002 Thermo King introducedthe SPECTRUM range, catering for multi-temperature distribution with up to threecompartments. The range includes theSPECTRUM SL for trailers, ideal for trunking

operations and deliveries to RDCs, and theSPECTRUM TS for trucks, ideal for urbanmulti-drop delivery operations.

SPECTRUM offers tighter temperaturecontrol in every compartment, fastertemperature pull-down and recovery, increased fuel efficiency and lowermaintenance costs than previouslyavailable. The efficiency of the units meansthe engine spends less time on high speed, thereby improving fuel economy—thenearest competitor uses 27% more fuelthan the Thermo King SPECTRUM SL.

For single temperature trailer operations forfrozen or chilled goods, Thermo King’s SLerange is the ideal option, offering excellentperformance, efficient fuel economy and lowmaintenance requirements. These featuresbenefit not only the operator, but theenvironment as well.

Keeping the noise down for the neighbours!A key factor for any supermarket is noisereduction, especially for early morningdeliveries. Both the SLe and the SPECTRUMranges offer audibly quieter operation thanother refrigeration units on the market.

In fact, nearest competitive units to the SL-200e were a massive 58% louder on lowspeed, with similar results achieved for theSPECTRUM SL.

In addition, Thermo King’s unique patentedcryogenic system, based on liquid carbondioxide, offers virtually noiseless andextremely efficient and environmentallyfriendly operation. Available for both trucks(the ST-CR 300 or multi-temperature versionST-CR MT) and trailers (SB-III CR), a numberof leading European supermarkets havealready taken advantage of the technology, including ICA in Sweden, Arla Foods inSweden and Denmark, and Belgiancompany Freshway.

Excellent service backup, throughout EuropeWith the most extensive dealer network inthe industry, more than 250 dealer andservice points providing sales and servicebackup, help is never far away for ThermoKing customers. Most dealers offer acomprehensive range of training, sales andworkshop services, including a rapid andskilled 24 hour, 7 days a week, 365 days ayear breakdown service, backed up by anextensive fleet of mobile repair workshops.

Cool Solutions for supermarkets

Supermarket home delivery. Thermo King’s direct drive units, such as the V-300, are ideal for urban home delivery operations.

7

Leading supermarket Tesco has recentlyconfirmed Thermo King as its top choicefor multi-temperature transportrefrigeration with a recent order for over100 SPECTRUM SL units in the UK, whileTesco Ireland is taking delivery of afurther 58 units.

The new vehicles in Ireland are all tri-temperature, and will be used to servicea brand new purpose built RDC in Dublin, recently opened by Tesco. The new RDCis part of Tesco’s investment programmeinvolving over 500 million Euros in thepast five years, and creating 1,500 new

jobs in Ireland. The new RDC will beused to supply all 77 Tesco stores in theRepublic of Ireland.

The trailers, built by Gray & Adams, havethree compartments, enabling Tesco tomaximize the efficiency of their deliveriesin Ireland by carrying combined loads atthree different temperatures, for exampledeep-frozen goods, chilled meat or dairyproducts, and fresh produce – all in thesame trailer. Using Thermo King’s highlyefficient S3 remote evaporators, theSpectrum offers precise temperaturecontrol in each compartment.

Cryogenics: The Coolest Solution

One of the challenges faced bysupermarkets is the increase inenvironmental legislation – with controlgetting increasingly tighter on both noiseand pollutant emissions. Another challengeis economical: maximising the shelf-life freshproduce, and making sure it looks its bestwhen it reaches the consumer.

Thermo King’s cryogenic system can help onboth these fronts. Noise emissions, evenwith the unit operating at full capacity, fallbelow the "Piek" limit of 60 dB(A) –ensuring deliveries even at night-time willsatisfy the low noise requirements. Andwith no separate diesel engine, there are nopolluting emissions.

The cryogenic system is also extremelyefficient. Faster temperature pull-down andrecovery ensure that temperature variationsare minimal, even on busy multi-dropdelivery rounds. With 1ºC able to make adifference of over a day in the shelf-life ofsome types of fresh produce, this can be animportant factor.

With the recent addition of the ST-CR MTmulti-temperature unit to the range, cryogenics are set to play an important rolein supermarket deliveries of the future.

The SPECTRUM SL multi-temperature trailer unit is the top choice for Tesco in the UK and Ireland.

DATA: ADDING VALUE TO YOUR BUSINESS

We are all living in the information age, andI’m sure many of you suffer from“information overload”. The transportationindustry is no different; running an efficientlogistics operation means that informationis vital. The cool chain is governed byEuropean legislation (EN12380) as well asCountry specific laws all of which promote“due diligence”, and companies today needto provide the data to comply with thislegislation.

This can be daunting but if your operationis required by legislation to store andpresent temperature data, there are manydevices available to help. You may alsowant to use data that you collect from therefrigeration unit to schedule maintenance, fault find or verify correct reefer operationand performance.

Over the next few issues of TTC, we willexplain the various options available to youfor Data Capture, Transfer and Management, starting in this issue with advice on what toconsider when choosing the right datacapture device for your operation.

Data Capture:In order to analyse information you firstneed to capture it. When choosing a datacapture device you must first decide how

much information you need: do you wantto view temperature data only, for exampleto comply with legislation, or do you alsowant to record reefer operation andperformance?

Temperature Recorders: (TranScan/T-TEC/DAS):If legislation requires that you monitor yourcargo temperature and store thisinformation for up to one year then youshould consider a temperature recorder. These devices also have a small number ofelectrical inputs that allow you to connect adoor switch or a defrost relay.

Data Recorders: (DAS/Smart Reefer/SR2) As well as temperature you may also wantto store other information, for example onreefer operation, alarms, thermostat setpoint, engine and electric hours meters, door openings, fuel levels, maintenance anddiagnostic information – all of which couldcontribute to improving efficiencies andreducing costs in your operation. In thiscase, you should choose a data recorder.

Installation:A data capture device (temperature or datarecorder) can come with or withouttemperature displays, so please considerthis when choosing the correct product foryour operation, as it may or may not be arequirement for you. Depending on thevehicle type, the device can be mounted onthe front wall of a trailer or the inside of atruck cab as a dashboard or bulkheadinstallation.

Both types of device will record thetemperature surrounding your loadedcargo. When choosing a recorder for asingle temperature operation you shouldhave two temperature probes inside thecargo area. One is installed near the reeferevaporator in the “air return” path, andone should be installed at least two thirdsof the internal box length towards the reardoors, in the path of the air flow from thereefer evaporator. If you are running amulti-temperature operation you shouldinstall two temperature sensors percompartment (“air on” and “air off”). Thiscan mean six sensors so please check thatyour chosen device can record up to sixtemperatures.

Memory:Your recording intervals can be set to your

requirements, from five minutes up toonce per hour. Each time the devicerecords the temperature it uses memory soyou must take this into account whenchoosing your device. 128K and 512Kmemory are fairly standard today. Arecorder with 512K of memory monitoringtwo sensors at 30 minute logging intervalswill store up to twelve months of databefore overwriting older files. This memorystorage will be less if you are logging sixsensors every thirty minutes so ensureyour chosen device has adequate memorycapacity for your operation.

To increase the memory capacity of yourdevice, you can download from therecorder and store the data on your officecomputer. Many users within yourcompany can then share, analyse and usethis data. This is called “Data Transfer”,which will be the subject of the next“Tips from the Experts”.

The blood donation service (BDS) of theBavarian Red Cross has commissioned atotal of 24 new temperature controlledvehicles with Thermo King direct driveunits, chosen to match the specificrequirements of each type of transport.

The organisation now has a fleet of 45vehicles, including depot vehicles, teamvehicles and supply trucks, covering thewhole state of Bavaria. Given the sensitive, sometimes life-saving, nature of theircargo, it is essential for temperatures tobe maintained at exactly the right levels.Human blood, for example, is transportedat +20 degrees (on its journey to thelaboratory immediately after donation) orin a frozen state at -20 degrees. Freshhuman plasma needs a temperature of -25degrees, whereas erythrocyte concentrateneeds to be kept at -2 to +4 degrees. The company Strasser, based in Pförring

near Ingolstadt, provided the vehicles’temperature control systems, choosing themost suitable refrigeration unit for eachtailor-made body. The VW Caddy, forexample, which was designed fortemperatures no colder than zero degrees, was provided with Thermo King’s battery-powered B085. The two compartments inthe Vito models require a multi-temperature unit, so the V-200/20 MAX wasthe number one choice here. The units areable to operate in stand-by mode thanksto an electric main supply capability. Thesame goes for the V-300/20 HFC typemodels, which allow for constanttemperatures of around plus 2 degrees inthe Sprinters.

The units were supplied by Munich-basedThermo King Bayern. Maintenance andservice requirements are catered for byeight service centres located throughout

Bavaria, a 24-hour-emergency service andtwo mobile service stations.

The Bavarian Red Cross’ blood donationservice, which celebrates its fiftiethanniversary this year, currently employsaround 500 people. The service organisesaround 4,380 donation clinics each year atlocations across Bavaria. In addition, 20mobile teams set out each day to takedonations. Approximately 500,000 blooddonations are received each year.

The blood donation service supplies theprepared blood products, which are testedto strict safety regulations, to Bavarianclinics and surgeries performingtransfusions. To ensure that the suppliesget to where they’re needed, the service’svehicles are on the road at all times of theday and night – clocking up 3.3 millionkilometres each year.
