In the beginning, Eurynome, Te Goddess o AllTings, rose naked rom Chaos, but ound nothing

substantial or her eet to rest upon, and thereoredivided the sea rom the sky, dancing lonely upon itswaves. She danced towards the south, and the windset in motion behind her seemed something new andapart with which to begin a work o creation. Wheel-ing about, she caught hold o this north wind, rubbedit between her hands, and behold! the great serpentOphion. Eurynome danced to warm hersel, wildlyand more wildly, until Ophion, grown lustul, coiledabout those divine limbs and was moved to couplewith her. Now, the north wind, who is also called

Boreas, ertilizes; which is why mares oten turn theirhind quarters to the wind and breed owls withoutaid o a stallion. So Eurynome was likewise got withchild. Next, she assumed the orm o a dove, brood-ing on the waves and in due process o time laid theUniversal Egg. At her bidding Ophion coiled seventimes about this egg, until it hatched and split in two.Out tumbled all things that exist, her children: sun,moon, stars, the earth with its mountains and rivers,its trees, herbs and living creatures.
