What’s so great about the Geisel Award?

The Geisel Award is a book award given to the authors and illustrators that have made the best book for early readers in the past year.

The winning books are seen as some of the best books for helping children to love learning how to read.

Who gives the award? The Association for Library Service to Children, or

ALSC, is in charge of deciding the winners of the Geisel award as well as the honor books.

ALSC is a large group, part of the American Library Association, that helps librarians that work with children. It works to help these librarians learn and grow so they can help students learn and grow, too!

A committee, or small group, of seven people picked by the president of ALSC votes for the book they think should be given the Geisel Award that year.

How is the award winner picked?

In order for a book to be voted as the winner for the coming year, the book must…

Be published in the United States in the last year.

Be turned in for review by December 31.

Be written for early readers, children from preschool to 2nd grade.

Share a fun, exciting story that a child will want to read.

Have simple sentences and be between 24 and 96 pages long.

Have “new words…added slowly” and repeated often (ALSC, 2012c).

Use pictures that help explain what words mean.

When is the award given?

The award is given every year in January.

The Geisel Award was created in 2004. But the first winner was not named until 2006!

So far, a winner has been found every year. Since 2006, there has been 7 winners and 24 honor books.
