Opening 2 minutes

In the first 10 seconds of the film the Warner Bros. Pictures logo emerges on to the screen. It is burnt and looks rusty. The director has done this to give you a feel of what the film is going to be like and to fit with the narrative they have made it look like a shield.

Then the Legendary Pictures logo emerges but this time it looks like heated blades. In the background there is dark sky with lots of smoke. There is also thunder and lightning. This all canotes war and violence.

There is non-diegetic sounds in the background over the logos, You can hear war drums / horns, bells and a woman singing some tribal music.

Opening 2 minutes

The Words 300 Then splatter on to the screen in red. This denotes blood. The film then cuts to an extreme close up of a pile of skeletons. There is still thunder and lightning. It then cuts to a close up of a baby. Non-diegetic voice (narrator) starts talking about the baby and how it is being inspected. Then there is long and low angle shot of a man holding a baby over the cliff were the pile of skeletons lay. This connotes that this man is like God, he is the chosen one deciding the fate over the baby.

The film then cuts to the baby 10 years or so later standing between two stone pillars. The narrator says that this person has been baptised in the fire of combat. The mise-en-scene of the two pillars connote that this kid is as hard as rock.

It then goes on to show the kid fighting with an adult, the man hits the kid very hard, but he carries on fighting. This denotes that Spartans won’t back down, it is also anchorage towards the fact that this is an action film and that it is set in the past.
