der VorgängerRecently, Lewis Hauser called to say he had a cus-

tomer—William J. Thomas of Alexandria, Va.—drop offa box of old der Vorgängers, and would I like to have them?

Of course! I responded. I drove over to of KarosserieLtd., his Fairfax, Va. Porsche-restoration shop to pick themup.

What a find! The earliest issue in the box was October1966 and the latest, February 1980. These issues are allblack-and-white and obviously pasted up by hand (re-member, this was the era before desktop computers).Each article had to be typed (on a typewriter... searchWikiworks.com for a description of these devices) to aspecific column width and then glued to a layout. Afterprinting, the pages were assembled and stapled, thenmailed. There were very few photos.

Besides the trip down Memory Lane of exactly howlabor-intensive producing a newsletter was in those days,leafing through these issues was an illuminating look atthe history of The Founders’ Region, Potomac. One ex-ample: Apparently, there were no dues in those days.

Although I’ve yet to work my way through the entirecollection, so far I’ve recognized at least a dozen namesfrom that era who are still active in Potomac today. Amongthem are noted hot-rod Speedster owner Dan Rowzieand 356 owners Carl Merril and Bill Tate.

Others include 356 engine builder Tim Berardelli, afrequent contribution to der Vorgänger during this period.Bill Tate was another name I tripped across, who alongwith Berardelli, volunteered at this year’s Deutsch Mar-que concours. (Coverage of these year’s DM— includ-ing photos of Berardelli and Tate—is on Pages 15–22.)Dan Dazzo, currently the safety chairman of DE events,was with Potomac during this period, along with AlanFriedman, Harleigh Ewell and Skip Reber.

Some of the DIY articles in these early issues are stillapplicable today. For example, who knew that CIS-equipped 911s had two fuel filters?

For future dVs, I’ll be revisiting these old issues to givemembers a look at their club’s past. Among a variety ofthings that have changed in the past 45+ years are thesetwo examples: Registration for the 1967 Parade was $20and a classified ad advertised a 1962 356B with sunroofand no rust for $6,500.

• • •As noted, this year’s Deutsch Marque Concours

proved to be a magnet on the first Sunday inMay for folksinterested in walking around Vienna, Va.’s Nottoway Parkat that measured pace so often used when viewing inter-esting collection of cars. Thanks to Concours ChairmanRon Davis’s hard and good work, there was a notablecollection of 356s, 911s both old and new, a couple of914s plus various 944s and 928s.

We should also recognize the work of photographersKen Marks, Michael Madrid and Ken Walls, whoworked the event and provided the photos you see in thisissue.

A tip of the hat also toMike Budinski,who wrote theilluminating artle on Pages 10–12 on how to replace anO-ring on an ’80s 911 oil thermostat.

Potomac’s summer season is in full swing. June offered Potomacmembers a wide variety of Porsche things to do including three differ-ent venues to eat breakfast/bunch with fellow Porsche enthusiasts, seewhat your car looks like when up on a lift, stay at the five-star NemacolinResort and tour Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous Fallingwa-ter house, test your skills driving through a field of or-ange cones and improve your driving skill on eitherSummit Point’s Shenandoah Circuit or the infamoustrack at Watkins Glen, N.Y. And these were just the “for-mal” club events as there were also several other venuesoffered to show off your Porsche.

Well, July is going to be busy as well. Please look at thecalendar on page 8 for a listing of all the “formal” July Po-tomac events. You also might want to check our websiteperiodically for notices about additional events that comeabout after der Vorgänger has gone to press.

One event I would like to mention is the July 28Wounded Warrior Road Rally, where 30 Wounded War-riors will serve as navigators in an “All About Speed” rallythrough theMaryland countryside. Even if you don’t par-ticipate in the rally, feel free to join us at the Branded 72 barbeque restau-rant in Rockville for lunch (for additional details see page 24).

As I mention periodically, PCA Potomac is run entirely by volunteers.We have no paid staff. These volunteers have arranged, coordinated andwill facilitate over 100 Potomac events for Potomac’s members to attendduring 2012. In addition, there are some behind-the-scene volunteerswho rarely get the public acknowledgement since their contributionsare that, behind the scenes. One group of these volunteers are those

who put this magazine together. I personally want to thank editor/de-signer Richard Curtis, publisher Tony Kelly, proofreader George Soodoo,photographers Ken Marks and Michael Madrid and the many con-tributing writers and photographers whomake dV happen every month.

Another couple of noteworthy, behind-the-scene vol-unteers are Michael Handelman and Ken Harwood, Po-tomac’s webmasters. Over the past two years, our websitehas been completely overhauled, updated, moved, im-proved...you name it, it either has been done or is on theto-do list to be done. If you haven’t recently explored ourwebsite, I encourage you to do so. My sincere thanks toMichael and Ken for their contributions.

A few years ago, Potomac made the decision to dropits internet forum. The reason was that there exists in themetropolitan area a popular Porsche-oriented forumcalled Dorkiphus, “The land of NOVA/DC/MDPorschephiles” (www.dorkiphus.net).

The forum is run by Potomacmember Chris Mazzantiand while not affiliated in any way with PCA or Potomac,the site does a nice job of meeting local Porsche owners

forum-type needs. It is funded entirely by donations and has over 2,000members. It is a great place to buy or sell Porsche items and/or seek an-swers to your technical questions. There often are threads about up-coming Potomac events and even post-event reports and photos. Checkit out sometime.

Recently, I experienced a rather noticeable oil leakfrom the front right side of my 1987 911 normally aspi-rated engine. There are several “classic” oil leaks that canoccur toward the front portion of the air-cooled 911 en-gines: oil cooler O-rings, the hose and seal on the oilbreather plate, the oil temperature light switch (idiotlight) and oil thermostat O-ring.

Typically these leaks allow oil to drain down the rightfront side of the crankcase dripping onto the exhaust. Allof the above items should be replaced anytime the en-gine is out of the car as these items are difficult, but notimpossible, to replace with the engine in the car. Aftercareful inspection I determined that the leak was com-ing from the oil thermostat.Diagnosing the leak: The oil thermostat unit at the

back of and on the top of the engine case can be observedby looking just under the volumetric flow air meter (fig-ures 1 and 3) through to the top of the engine crankcase.

To confirm that the O-ring is leaking, start the car fromcold condition and observe the area around the oil ther-mostat using a flashlight. Since you have to look deepinto the engine compartment, watch that your clothingdoes not get caught in the air-conditioning compressorfan belt or other moving parts..

The seal often leaks most from a cold engine as the oilpressure is high at that time and the O-ring seal is at itsleakiest state (e.g. has not expanded and softened with

heat).While inspecting this area, check for leaks associated

with the oil breather cover gasket, the oil temperaturelight switch, and the rubber hose clamped to the oilbreather cover plate.Replacing the oil thermostat O-ring: Order a re-

placement O-ring from the Porsche dealer.* Unbolt theair-conditioning compressor and set on the side of theright rear fender (with copious padding) Figure 2.

Remove the air box cover and filter.Remove the airbox andmass air flow sensor assembly

(you don’t need to remove the airbox from the mass flowair sensor). At this point you should have access to the oilthermostat behind the air intake manifold.

Confirm the area around the oil thermostat is cleanand free from dirty oil deposits and grit. If the O-ring sealhas been leaking for some time, there is probably a sig-nificant accumulation of oil and dirt deposits.

Clean the area around the thermostat with brakecleaner. Figure 4. The fine nozzle and solvent pressure

can be used to clean away the oil and grit deposits (placerags under the engine to collect the solvent runoff).

Remove the two 10 mm nuts and wave washers fromthe oil thermostat.

Place an offset flat screwdriver (Figure 7) under theflange of the oil thermostat and pry it from the crankcase.It should lift out without significant force. Once the O-ring exits the crankcase, the oil thermostat can easily belifted out of the cavity by hand. Lift out and remove fromthe engine. (Figure 5)

Figures 4 shows the oilthermostat after clean-ing the area with brakecleaner. Figure 5 showsthe area after the ther-mostat has been re-moved. A good tip is tocover this area with arag until the thermostatwith new O-ring isready to be reinstalled.

the intake valve cover as the thermostat will drip oil as itis carried out from its home.

Place the sending unit on a bench, remove the old O-ring, being careful not to scrape or damage the body ofthe thermostat or the sealing gland. Roll the new O-ringalong the body into the sealing groove. Lubricate with alittle motor oil or assembly grease (I prefer Dupont Kry-

tox). (Figure 7)Using your finger, feel around the edge of the oil ther-

mostat hole and try to wipe away any dirt-laden oil de-posits. Since the thermostat with new O-ring is replacedlargely by feel, you want to make sure there is no en-trained dirt around that could get dragged into thecrankcase while replacing the unit.

Once properly aligned, the thermostat should freelydrop into the hole in the crankcase. Push the top of theunit to seat the O-ring in the hole. Replace the washersand nuts and tighten.

Replace the mass air flow sensor, air box, air-condi-tioning compressor, filter and filter cover.

There. You’ve saved yourself about $400 in me-chanic’s fees. You’re welcome. Feel free to buy me a beerat a PCA gathering.

* As a former research manager for a major automotive company, Iknow from experience that plastic and rubber automotive parts must bethoroughly evaluated before final specification. Aftermarket part pro-ducers often do not have the means for accrediting a specific plastic orrubber resin material for an application. On most Porsches, you can see the brake pad thick-ness through the wheel’s spokes. And you can tell—at aglance—whether the pads are getting too worn.

If the pad material is equal to or less than the backingplate, it’s either time to change your pads or begin to startpaying close attention to them. This is absolutely true ifyou track the car. Porsche recommends no less than 2mm of pad.

Some experts say that the condition of the rotorscould mean 2 mm of pad thickness would be too thin.On any car in any application the pad life is totally de-pendent on driver’s use, abuse or lack of use.

One way to know how much further you can go to-wards the end of their life is to know how far you wentin the used-up materiel thickness. For example if youwent 50,000 miles and used 10 mm of friction materialand now have 10 mm left, and assuming your drivinghabits have not changed, check again in 10,000 miles.

To check the rotors, look for a significant ridge on the

outer diameter of the rotors. You can also measure therotor’s thickness. The minimum thickness will be in-scribed on the rotor’s edge. You may need a wire brushto knock off corrosion and road dirt, but the measure-ment will be there.

Rob Nelson of Hawk Brakes, a popular brand of rac-ing and other pads, recommends replacing “the pads ifthey are getting thin. Be careful not to look at only oneend of the pad,” too, he says. Some pads are “tapered ...as a result of poor tolerance control in some vehicles cou-pled with wear rates of other parts in the systems.”

On April 7, 2012, 28Potomac members, theirfamily and friends visitedone of the more unusualdestinations in NorthernVirginia.

Outside of Culpeper,Va., is the storage facility forthe National Museum ofAmericans in Wartime. Thepurpose of the museum isto preserve and share withall Americans the experi-ences of wartime, both mil-itary and civilian, and tohonor all those who have made such tremendous sacri-fices to keep our country free.

This museum has an interesting history. Years ago,Alan Cors bought an old WWII jeep for fun. He gothooked on the idea of buying and restoring old militaryvehicles. Since then, he has amassed a collection of over50 vehicles from around the world, including American,Soviet, British, German and Swiss vehicles. I think manymembers of our club can relate to the slippery slope ofbuying things with engines!

Types of vehicles include armored personnel carriers,motorized artillery, tanks, scout cars and support vehi-cles. They include vehicles form WWI, WWII, Korea,Vietnam, the Cold War and the first Gulf War.

Our tour included a tour of the collection, a tour ofthe restoration shops, a ride in an armored personnel car-rier, and for a lucky few, a chance to drive a U.S. Army6x6.

Members enjoyed their ride in the APC, seeing forthemselves just how cramped the quarters are and how

impressively it slogs through mud and fords throughwater.

We also enjoyed our shop tour, where we saw aWWII-era diesel engine that is larger than an entire 356,and an unusual two-man tank, one of only two left in theworld, fromWorld War I. It was smaller than a 914!

But in the author’s opinion, the best part of the day

(apart from checking out and riding in the hardware andplaying in themud) was getting to make new friends whoshare a common interest in exotic machinery. Finally, asan added bonus, The Founders’ Region, Potomac do-nated the $1,200 in registration fees to the museum to-ward construction of the new facility in Prince WilliamCounty, Va. to house this exciting collection.

It wouldn’t be the Deutsche Marque if there was nota weather scare, and so it was early on Sunday, May 6!Despite the forecast of perfect weather that Sunday, therewas a fine mist falling from 6:30 to about 8:30 and re-ports of showers in Rockville even later.

Nevertheless, the weather soon cleared up and 40 carshow stalwarts showed up, including 13 beautiful 356s.At the traditional awards reception, the Best of Marquetrophy went to Howard Byron’s pristine blue ’55 Speed-ster.

The award for most drama went, hands down, toDave Miller. It seems as though his stunning ’72 911 E

had a bit more Porsche tractor in its DNA than most, be-cause it decided on its own to do a little garden tilling inthe vegetable gardens adjacent to the car show field.

Not long after Miller’s early arrival, his spotless 911gently rolled backwards down the hill onto the nearbyservice road and then down into a vegetable garden!

Miller was immediately in hot pursuit of his runawaywhose muffler became entangled in the wire fencing in-tended to keep out such intruders. It was soon deter-mined that even with many enthusiastic helping handsmore powerful help would be needed. So Dave called abuddy who soon arrived with his SUV and the 911 waspulled free with only slight damage.

Roderick Harrison’s Ma-rine Blue Metallic ’90928 GT that he’s ownedfor two years. The Lo-cust Grove, Va. residentalso owns a 996 911and is looking for a 996Turbo.

Roderick Harrison lives in Locust Grove, Va. and re-cently retired from the Federal Aviation Administrationafter 34 years of service. He was the assistant air trafficmanager of the Potomac Consolidated TRACON locatedin Vint Hill, Va.

This 928 GT is Harrison’s second Porsche althoughhe’s already currently searching for a 911 turbo. The 928was originally sold in Los Angeles where it was intiallyused to showcase Porsche’s available options. It is one ofthe most heavily optioned 928s, with a list price in 1989of $93,500 of which almost $20,000 was in options. Afew options include: Rootwood console and trim, full up-graded interior leather and custom installed CD holder.The car has original factory paint and options, without

any modifications.In 2004, the 928 GT was bought by a doctor in Fred-

ericksburg, Va. and sold to someone in the Boston area.Harrison brought it back to the Fredericksburg area. Eachowner has taken meticulous care of the car and it is cur-rently seeking a new caretaker.

Harrison is a retiree and a recent member of PCA Po-tomac. While volunteering at Habitat for Humanity, hegot into a discussion with someone who told him aboutthe May 2012 Deutsch Marque Concours, where thesephotos were taken. Roderick’s car took a first in class.

“I had a great time at the concours,” he said. “Therewere many great cars there but more great people andstories. I enjoyed them all immensely.”

Sept. 29: Rally No. 4,Oktoberfest Rally

The PCA Potomac 2012 rally season got off to a strongstart with the “Signs of Spring” rally on May 12. RallyChairs Craig and Linda Davidson organized a fantasticcourse from Gaithersburg, Md. to Ashburn, Va. throughsome beautiful back country roads, ending at Clyde’sWillow Creek Farm in Ashburn for lunch.

Thirty-three cars with over 60 eager driver-navigatorteams gathered to see what Craig and Linda had in storefor us. It was a great group of people—some familiar facessuch as Roland and Alice Frenck and Doug and EmmyHolmes along with some new faces such as Mia Walshand her daughter, Sara. Mia told Sara that she wanted herto navigate as her Mother’s Day present! Of course someold hands like Kirstin Knott, who showed everyone howit’s done with her own industrial tape dispenser to tapeup all the photos, directions and clues.

So what did Craig and Linda have in store? I tell youthey worked overtime for this one! If you are familiar withthe phrase “diabolically simple” then that would describethe rally. While a simple photo rally format, it turned outto be very difficult.

I learned a valuable lesson. My navigator and Iswitched roles when we got to Virginia; she is a muchbetter driver than I am a navigator! After tallying as manyphotos as possible, we got to roll the dice in the event ofa tie, which was fortunate, because there were ties for firstand second place.

We got to Clyde’s and cooled down in the bar whilethe results were tallied. First place honors went to KateDaley and Chrissy Reich; second place to Ellen Beck andBob Gutjahr; and third to Jim and Diane Kinnear.

If you missed this one, don’t worry—there are twomore rallies this year: theWoundedWarrior Rally on July28, where you will have aWoundedWarrior as your nav-igator. This should be a great rally as theses guys and galsare all better with maps and directions that any of us. OnSept. 29 is the Oktoberfest Rally, where you gets to com-bine your passions of Porsche and rallies with Brats andbeer! Don’t miss either of these rallies; space is limitedso sign up ASAP!

On Sunday, May 20, TheFounders’ Region, Potomac returnedto the StonymanGourmet Farmer inLittle Washington, Va. for our thirdspring gourmet brunch.

With a good group of 39 peoplein 24 cars (including oneMercedes)we drove some great rural roads (in-cluding some old standards) on afantastic balmy Spring Sunday downto little Washington. The weatherwas fantastic, and it felt like summerhad arrived a little early. The townknew the Porsches were coming, soall the shopkeepers stayed open lateand the jewelry store made sure theyhad enough in stock.

We met at the Manassas Battlefield VisitorsCenter and took off on a country drive throughAldie, Middleburg, The Plains, Marshall, FlintHill and finally (Little)Washington, Va.We hadsome beautiful cars, including Javier Ro-driguez’s (heavily modified) early 911, Darryland Nanci Shanley’s Boxster S all the way fromOhio and Hank and Debbie Allen’s beautifulblue 997 cabriolet.

We also had help from volunteers Steve andLinda Gifford (front and center in the groupphoto above) and Tom and Karen Decker whohelped lead cars in what was a big group. In afirst for a John Eberhardt-organized trip, no-body got lost this time! That probably had

something do to with me going last.We also got to see some new faces, includ-

ing the McDonalds, the Barakats, the Currysand Trish Poljak—who got introduced tobrunch, Potomac style!

The Stonyman Gourmet Farmer on GayStreet in (Little)Washington is a merchant gro-cer specializing in locally grown organic pro-duce and cheeses and are advocates ofNorthern Virginia farm-to-table cuisine.

Proprietors Susan and Alan James outdidthemselves with freshly made Herbed FromageBlanc (Chevre), Cavia, Turkey Ballatine, Five-Vegetable Layered Lasagna, Organic MicroGreens and a 200-year-old James family recipefor Curried Wild Rice.

This was, of course, followed by a fullcheese course, dessert and coffee. Prior to thecheese course, Alan James presented an origi-nal tomme (cheese wheel) to all, and I am prettysure it was on a 19" rim! It was all, of course,absolutely delicious!

For those of you who have not visited theStonyman, I highly recommend it—and youdon’t even have to go to Little Washington(even though the roads are great) as they rou-tinely come to farmers markets inside the belt-way.

Given the continued success of our Stony-man brunches, keep an eye on the Drive ’nDine calendar for our Fall Foliage brunch inOctober.

This has given Potomac members a fantastic oppor-tunity to enjoy this event throughout the summer at nocost for admission. As a result, about 40 Porsche owners,including many Potomac members, brought their P-carsand families out to Great Meadow on the evening of Sat-urday, April 19 to enjoy three great hours of polo, a spec-tacular venue, great company and delicious food cooked

by our very own PCA Potomac Past President Tuffy vonBriesen and Mike Tsamouras from Porsche of Tysons.Rest assured, Tuffy and Mike cook a mean burger!

In addition to fabulous food and fabulous polo,Tysons also brought about a dozen of their best tempta-tions out to show off to the crowd, including 991, 997cabriolets, a Carrera GTS and a Panamera Turbo S. TheTysons guys get a lot of credit for their bravery in parking

all that wonderful machinery right next to the polo field!In addition to new faces, there were familiar faces such

as Ken Marks, Steve and Linda Gifford, Matt and ValerieCuster, and Karen Mimbs.

The distance award goes to Darryl and Nanci Shanley,mid-Ohio region members from Medina, Ohio, whowere in town for the weekend and attended no fewerthan three Potomac events over the weekend.

As an added treat, PCA Potomac member Nate Dai-ley was playing his inaugural match for the Mad CapFarm polo team in the “Porsche” polo shirts. I guess no

matter how you look at it, PCAmembers like horsepower.Nate was also kind enough to open his box to Potomacmembers. This, plus the Porsche of Tysons hospitalitydeck, meant more than enough food and drink for all.

The Porsches and Polo series will be going on all sum-mer, and there will be a chance for members to get outthere on July 14, August 18 and September 8.

As for the crest itself, it is acomposite of symbols from severalsources. The small center crest—ablack horse on a field of yellow—

is the coat of arms of Stuttgart.Horses have formed part of thearms of Stuttgart since the MiddleAges when the town was founded,hence the name (Stuttgart trans-lates to “stud farm” in English).

The stag’s antler and the redand black stripes in the quarter-ings of the shield are part of thecoat of arms of the former King-dom of Wurttemberg (1806–1908).
