The last verse with its note about judgment links this reading with the Gospel, where the king separates the sheep from the goats. “The Lord is my shepherd ; there is nothing I shall want “ (Responsorial Psalm). 2nd Reading 1 Cor 15:20-26,28 [Christ the Firstfruits] Paul teaches that Jesus’ reign as king, inaugurated with his resurrection, will last until his second coming. Then he will hand over the kingdom to the Father. The meaning is that God now acts towards the world “through Jesus Christ, our Lord.” At the end of time, God’s relationship with redeemed mankind will be a direct one. Meanwhile notice that Jesus’ kingdom is in constant warfare with evil. [Christ] must reign until [God] has put all his enemies [evil] under his feet.’ We should be part of that warfare against evil! THEME: The Leadership of Our Lord.
In our democratic culture, we know about kings and emperors
only from television and picture magazines. But we believe in
leaders, “deriving (though) their just power from the
consent of the governed” (Declaration of Independence).
Enlightened and reliable leadership is a great benefit to any
society. We expect our leaders to be conscientious people,
responsible to God, since we are “one nation under God.” Our
leaders must be equally concerned about all, since “all men are
created equal.”
