R amona isn’t just a quaint country town loaded with things to do, people to see, and places to go.

It’s a horse town — brimming with sincere folks, abundant history and relentless community spirit.

With ranches and horse property galore, Ramona boasts two equestrian centers and an abundance of trails to choose from.

It’s also home to some of the most generous people on the planet, do-gooders who are active in organizations such as Ramona Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Kiwanis, Soroptimist International, Ramona Food and Clothes Closet and Ramona Senior Center.

Many are responsible for arrang-ing local events, such as the annual Christmas Tree Lighting, Town Hall Christmas dinner, and the trendy Artist Open Studios Tour.

Rich in history, Ramona was once considered the turkey capital of the world. Today, it offers visitors a friend-ly a place to stop and stay awhile, as they plan a tour of the museum, enjoy delicious meals from area restaurants

and peruse local stores. Consumers will find their choice of merchants, from charming antique and crafts stores, to clothing boutiques and booksellers.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find a handful of parks, including Dos Picos County Park, which offers overnight camping, catch-and-release fishing and other seasonal activities. There are two regulation golf courses and too many hiking trails to name.

Wine connoisseurs will discover more than two-dozen tasting rooms stocked with award-winning wines and offering breathtaking views and an opportunity to spot native wildlife.

Patriotism remains a focal point, as Rotary volunteers position nearly 70 flags along Main Street on most patriotic holidays, and Ramona VFW Post 3783 welcomes former and current members of the military.

In addition, Ramona Airport offers aviators a pleasant place to land and has a museum open to the public.

With Ramona’s countless programs for children and adults, it’s safe to say townspeople and visitors alike will find Ramona loaded with horses, heart and tons of town spirit. n

u Spectacular views are in every direction, and you may even catch a glimpse of the birds and wildlife that make Ramona their home.

u View exceptional murals that grace the exteriors of four local businesses on Main Street, between Third and 11th streets.

u Horse riding or hiking on one of the many area trails is a wonderful way to enjoy a sunny day.

u Travel back to days gone by with a visit to the Guy B. Woodward Museum on Main Street.

u Make a reservation to learn about camels and maybe even ride one on a tour of Oasis Camel Dairy.

u Watch planes come and go at Ramona Airport — one of the busiest in the county — and tour the Classic Rotors helicopter museum.

u Ramona offers two 18-hole golf courses — more than most small towns can boast.

u Watch a drag race at Barona 1/8th Mile Drags, just outside of town on Wildcat Canyon Road.

fruitful region. Winemakers are entering competitions, both on the East and West coasts, and earning ribbons that designate their wine as the “best of the best.”

At the same time, winemakers are being invited to prestigious events, such as the annual San Diego Press Club Awards and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego fundraiser.

Ramona Valley Vineyard Association President Micole Moore said, “We are also involved with the Poway Performing Arts Center and pour at various events, including the Santee Bluegrass Festival and the recent Ramona Art & Wine Festival, whose mission is to help raise money for local murals.”

more grapes in the ground. We are not going to be huge; we want to stay intimate, rural and nice. But certainly we want to divert some of the traffic from the Temecula region and continue to spread the word.”

Documented as a community that produces high-quality grapes due to the unique weather microclimate that offers warmer days and cooler nights, the region was officially dubbed the Ramona Valley American Viticulture Area in January 2006.

Johnathan Martinez is one of several local artists who will be welcoming visitors to his studio on April 11 and

12, 2015, when the 12th annual Ramona Artists Open Studios Tour gets under way.

This will be Martinez’ second year on the tour. He specializes in oil, acrylic and graphite paintings.

He left the field of construction work to pursue a lifelong dream of becoming an artist. His works are noted by bright colors and often without faces on his subjects. The reason for faceless

Ramona H.E.A.R.T. Mural Project is the guiding force

behind four magnificent local murals, with more in the works.

The first mural in the series, a depiction of local rodeo rider Casey Tibbs, was installed in 2012 on the Town & Country Real Estate and Home Loans building at


the corner of Main and 10th streets.The second, an equine-themed mural,

was unveiled in 2013 at the Ramona Business Barn, 369 Main St.

In 2014, two more murals were installed: a commerce-themed mural sponsored by Ramona Chamber of Commerce on the Affordable Treasures building at 677 Main St., and a music-themed mural at Ramona Music Center, 1045 Main St.

Visitors driving our backcountry roads have something new to see, with recent quilt block installations

sponsored by the Julian Backcountry Quilt Trail.

A quilt trail is a driving route along which property owners have decorated their businesses, barns, out-buildings or residences with painted quilt squares viewable from the road. They are unique reflections of the areas they cover.

The local quilt trail is the first in Southern California and only the third in the state, according to the Julian Woman’s Club, which is spearheading the effort. About a dozen colorful designs now adorn buildings from Ramona to Julian.

In Ramona, the squares have been installed along Highway 78 on Tulloch Ranch and Star B Ranch, both in the 28000 block, and others are in the planning stages.

Ramona is often thought of as a sleepy town situated in the foothills above San Diego. But only a short

drive from San Diego’s main thorough-fares you will discover a number of home communities established here.

Ramona’s oldest planned community is San Diego Country Estates (SDCE), built in 1970, on more than 3,250 acres of land in the San Vicente Valley. It is about six miles southeast of downtown Ramona. At the time it was established, all of Ramona had a population of only 5,000 people, and three families lived in the San Vicente Valley. Today, SDCE boasts a population of about 10,000 people who occupy more than 3,600 homes and condominiums.

Near San Diego Country Estates is the Rancho San Vicente community, formerly known as Ryland Homes. Residents of the single-family homes enjoy beautiful views and access to open spaces.

Response by European and Canadian visitors has reinforced the popularity of the Guy B.

Woodward Museum, according to museum Director Ken Woodward.

He said they cater to the people who like to journey and visit all museums, and those staying in the San Diego Country Estates timeshares.

“They sometimes come here thinking this might be one house with some dinky displays,” he said. But after he takes them on a tour, he proves just the opposite.

When they arrive, he says, “I ask them if they have some time, because my tour might last as long as two hours. When they complete the tour, I’d hear them say, ‘My gosh, I can’t believe what you people have done here.’”

Woodward, who is maintaining and adding to his late father’s collections, said he is always willing to serve.

“Saturday and Sundays, I’m always here,” he assured.

He said people learn about the museum through the Internet. When they visit Ramona, they ask if there’s anything to do in this area, and the museum is often mentioned.

A prized collection of 550 books on the subject of Voices of Pioneer Women is now in beautifully designed cases in the country schoolhouse.

“Several years ago, we acquired these from a lady in Lemon Grove who had the books all over her house,” he said. “After cataloging them, we established a book club so that they could be checked out like a library.”

These books cover biographies, letters and many other things recorded by women over 200 years, chronicling their journeys westward.

The museum doesn’t keep records of the number of people who visit, but Woodward indicated there seem to be more visitors this year. n

Ramona Town Hall was a vibrant and active place in its heyday, but for a number of years it

stood unused. Recent renovations, however, have resulted in its rebirth as a community treasure.

Exciting changes include the installation of turn-of-the-century antique reproduction light fixtures, shown at right, fabricated by Woody Kirkman, owner of W.T. Kirkman Lanterns, and the restoration of the East and West wings, once again being used a meeting spot for groups and a site for special events.

The historic facility was dedicated at 729 Main St. on Feb. 22, 1894, as a gift from local benefactors Augustus and Martha Barnett. It originally served as the location for dances and a public library, and became the primary gathering place for local

A glistening tree, Santa Claus, community carolers and Main Street festivities will usher in the

season at the annual Ramona Chamber of Commerce Christmas Tree Lighting Dec. 6.

There will be lots of family fun in Collier Park, 626 E St., including the lighting of the tree at 5:30 p.m., photos with Santa Claus, carolers, and sleigh and train rides.

On Main Street, shops will be open and adorned with lights and decora-tions, and more carolers will sing from the steps of Ramona Town Hall.

There will be a Chamber-sponsored Find the Elf contest at participating stores, with a grand-prize winner selected from correctly completed entries.

“It’s going to be a super-fun family event,” says co-chair Lezley Knott.

It’s an anniversary season for Ramona Concert Association, as the organization marks its 30th

year with exciting musical performers guaranteed to delight audiences.

the many activities. Bakarich praised the volunteers at the registration desk who make visitors feel at home when they come to Ramona Senior Center.

The most popular activity takes place at 1 p.m. every Thursday. Bingo! That’s it — bingo games with cash prizes. Volunteers rearrange the tables after lunch as the players file in, purchasing packets of bingo cards and lining up their daubers to mark the numbers as they are called.

Jackpots may reach $250 before a winner calls out the magic word. In addition to the games, there are drawings for door prizes throughout the afternoon.

A close second to bingo is pokeno. It draws crowds to the center at 1 p.m. on Fridays. If other card games are of more interest, try pinochle on Friday mornings or bridge on Wednesday afternoons.

Several craft activities fill up the weekly calendar. The quilting group

has a regular following. There also are machine embroidery groups and lace and crocheting groups.

For the more hardy, a walking group on Tuesday mornings is followed by yoga classes. Exercise classes meet three days a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The center, which recently celebrated its 40th year, is located at 434 Aqua Ln. It is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. n

Ramona is full of aspiring athletes, from fall football players to winter basketball players, and spring

softball and baseball players. The community offers a variety of organized sports and outdoor activities for people of all ages.

In addition to an assortment of indoor and outdoor athletic programs organized by the Boys and Girls Club of Ramona, there are activities at the Casey Tibbs Western Center and the International Equestrian Center, both in San Diego Country Estates.

Ramona PONY Baseball, Ramona Girls Softball and Ramona Adult Softball League keep the bases busy. Activities for football enthusiasts include Ramona Pop Warner Football and Cheer, which utilize the fields

at the Ramona Parks & Recreation Association for practices, games and occasional tournaments.

There is a Ramona Youth Girls Volleyball league and two soccer leagues.

Ramona is also home to the Ramona Rebels Elite competitive cheer and tumbling squad. Teams comprised of both girls and boys compete across the nation and have a growing reputation.

Of course, there are a number of school sports where youngsters learn and evolve individually, and as a team. Programs offered at Ramona High School include cross country, football, basketball, baseball, golf, tennis, water polo, swim, lacrosse, track and field and others.

Though Old Survey Road 97 is a challenge to find on the GPS or in a Thomas Guide map book, it was

once a gateway to Ramona. Established at the end of the 18th

century, the road ran from Escondido to the western part of Ramona. Some of its historic travelers included Native American Indians, the infamous Kit

Carson, and soldiers who fought in the Battle of San Pasqual.

It was also traveled by Old West wagons, stagecoaches, postal carriers, and eventually automobiles. Even gold miners eager to stake their claim commuted on the road, heading for the gold mining town of Julian.

In 1875, the wide, well-graded dirt road was declared a public highway for

the second time, bringing all who were determined to reach Ramona and parts of the backcountry.

In the early 1900s, the road was paved and considered a main through-way. In 1930, it was abandoned and replaced with an alternate route, known as Highway 78.

Today, members of the Ramona Trails Association (RTA) are working toward converting the historic road into a hiking and equestrian trail.

“It’s a legitimate road,” said RTA Board Member Glen Morgan, hopeful legislators will find a way to reopen it to the public.

The proposed trail would stretch from the west end of Ramona to San Pasqual Valley near Escondido and intersect the Coast to Crest Trail, which runs alongside Lake Hodges and through Rancho Santa Fe and parts of Del Mar. It would offer outdoor enthusiasts another starting point on the scenic route from the country to the coastline.

While the RTA has experienced roadblocks, Morgan remains optimis-tic, saying that reopening the road would be a matter of unlocking some gates and rerouting the tail end of the trail to accommodate a supportive property owner.

As they pursue this project, RTA members envision the dust on Old Survey Road 97 will one day be converted into happy trails. n
