The Theme for 2014 is the Voices that echo “The Glory of God through Prayer & Service” We hope 2014 has started well for you and that the holiday season and recent long weekend have been a blessing for you, spending this time with those you love and doing what you love. Lent has begun, the season inviting us to engage with God and our heart; an opportunity to unclutter our lives and to allow God in. March 13 also marks the 1st Anniversary since Pope Francis was elected. What an amazing year it has been. Pope Benedict surprised the world last year the week before Ash Wednesday when he chose to retire, believing our Church needed a new leader to guide us into the next chapter in our story. Over the year Pope Francis has lifted our morale in what has been a difficult time of our church with the Parliamentary Enquiry and the Royal Commission into Sexual Abuse. May all people find healing and peace. May we respond as Jesus would with love and compassion. We congratulate Cardinal George Pell in his new appointment to be in charge at the Vatican Bank. Many challenges await him. Cardinal Pell has our prayerful support. Pope Francis has in one year brought us joy, hope modelled to us the role of discipleship to be of one heart and one mind. Pope Francis has challenged us in many ways as has his quote “Today has any one of us wept because of the situation of boat people and others like them? Has any one of us grieved for the death of these brothers and sisters? Has any one of us wept for these persons who were on the boat? For the young mothers carrying their babies? For these men who were looking for a means of supporting their families? We are a society, which has forgotten how to weep, how to experience compassion – “suffering with” others: the globalization of indifference has taken from us the ability to weep! ...... Has any one wept? Today has anyone wept in our world?” Pope Francis As Pope Francis mirrors to us the response of Jesus, may we open our hearts and respond to life’s challenges with love and compassion. Last year at our Sunday 11 am Mass, Fr Brian briefed the Parishioners about the progress of our new church. During this moment an idea came to me about the Mauritian community also contributing, due to the large Mauritian community attending this church. After Mass I was approached by Paulette Ribet who informed me she shared similar sentiments regarding the potential assistance the Mauritian community could have. We approached Fr Brian on the same day and he was delighted about the idea.A committee was formed including Georgette Allas, Paulette Ribet, John Segedin, Dominique Tranquille, Ray and Christine Pierre, Jerome Barbeau, Yolene Toussaint, Maggie Toussaint and Hedy Carvalho. We decided to hold a dinner dance on the 28th of February. We reached out to the Mauritian communities and anyone who was willing to sponsor us through, donations, advertising in the booklets and most of all to attend the dance on Friday, the 28th of February 2014 at St Anthony’s School Hall, in Noble Park. Friday the 28thsaw all tickets sold, ensuing maximum exposure to the Mauritian culture. Entertainment involved and exhibition by Domique Tranquille and his dancers the traditional dance known as the Sega. Lindsay Minfa sang a Chinese song as Mauritius is made up of many nationalities including -- Chinese and Indians. A live band and D.J were also utilised which ensured the dance floor had constant traffic. Jacques la Caterer fed the 407 people with a traditional Mauritian Banquet.

It was nice to see our three priests and deacon, Fr Brian, Fr Longinus, Fr Vinoth and Deacon Sang getting into the swing on the dance floor. At the end of the night we presented Fr Brian with a cheque for $13.500, which will go towards two Stained Glass windows in the new church.

The African Dream Travel has donated a return trip from Perth to Mauritius, Mauritius to Perth to be raffled shortly and all proceeds will go towards the Church as part of the fundraiser dance. We hope you will buy a ticket to support this great fundraiser, for tickets contact any of the above or Resurrection Parish. When we work together all things are possible. Together we stand divided we fallGod Bless Georgette Allas

Deanery News

The gathering of the South Sudanese community at St Anthony’s started in 2003 when the Parish realized the community had started to settle in the area. The parish under the leadership of Father Anthony Feeney started to welcome them, journey with them through their resettlement and make them welcomed to the Parish community. They started to celebrate their first African liturgy Mass in 2005 with a monthly Mass every third Sunday of the month. The Mass has increased now to fortnightly on the first and third Sunday at 2:30pm.

On Sunday 16th February we welcomed our first South Sudanese ordained Priest Fr Ladu James Yanga who was ordained in 2013 for the Archdiocese of Brisbane and is currently the Associate Priest at St. Paul’s Parish Woodridge. He came to celebrate the feast of St Josephine Bakhita the Patron Saint of Sudan with the South Sudanese community.

The Mass was attended by many of their community members from around the Dandenong deanery. Fr Ladu was the main celebrant concelebrated by Fr Brian Collins the Parish Priest of St Anthony’s & Resurrection Parishes, his assistant Fr Longinus Onyechesi, Fr Joe Caddy the Parish Priest of All Saints Parish Fitzroy and Deacon George Piech Meat the South Sudanese community Chaplain.

It was one of the greater celebrations of the South Sudanese for two reasons, welcoming their first ordained son and celebrating the feast day of their Icon Saint St Bakhita’s. The choirs and the children’s dancing lead the Mass which created an atmosphere of the real African Mass. The real Joy of singing the glory took more than 10 minutes and the while celebration went smoothly. At the end of the Mass Fr Brian gave a very powerful word to welcome Fr Ladu and congratulate the community for the spirit of togetherness in bringing their African liturgy to the life of the Parish and the whole Archdiocese of Melbourne. The nearly two hours Mass concluded with a community BBQ which was organised by St Bakhita’s Choirs, Women’s group, youth group, and their Catechists.

South Sudanese Catholic Community at St Anthony’s Noble Park

Our Deanery was shocked to hear that St Anthony’s and St John Vianney’s were having both their Priests transferred. St John Vianney’s has welcomed two OMI priests John McGinty and John Sebastian to their leadership team. St Anthony’s and Resurrection were surprised to hear that their communities were to be engaged in a team ministry. Fr Brian the Parish Priest, two new Assistant Priests, Longinus Onyechesi, Vinoth Santiago and Vicki Russell, Pastoral Associate/Manager have all been asked to work in a team ministry. A model of formation for new priests to work in a team, with women and in a multicultural community. There are many Parishes in the Melbourne Archdiocese now working as twined/partner Parishes and there are at least 3 Parishes working in a triple partnership. We wish Resurrection and St Anthony’s well in this new chapter.

Obituary- Father Leo Saleeba 4 August 1931 - 2 July 2011

Family, friends and colleagues gathered at Resurrection Church on Tuesday 19 July to celebrate a Memorial Mass offered by Father Brian Collins for Father Leo Saleeba who passed away on 2 July 2011. Father Leo was buried in a private service shortly following his death. Father Leo served the Resurrection Catholic Parish Community at Keysborough as Parish Priest for 15 years from 1984 to 1999. Father Leo also faithfully served the Melbourne Catholic Church in the parishes of Geelong, Dandenong, Collingwood, Wattle Park, Moorabbin, Bulleen, Bennettswood, Elwood, Kensington and East Geelong. Throughout his ministry at Resurrection, Father Leo was actively involved in many community groups and activities. He was a great supporter of the Interfaith Network, Rotary and other local

sporting clubs and organisations. He had a great love of the North Melbourne (Kangaroos) football Club as well as The Melbourne Storm and was a member of the Moonee Valley Racing Club. At his Memorial Mass, Vicki Russell, Pastoral Associate of Resurrection Parish, invited various family members and colleagues to place symbols of Father Leo’s faith life and community involvements on a memorial table. Several tributes were expressed by regional Bishop Peter Elliot, Monsignor Peter Jeffrey and by Father Leo’s niece, Justine, who represented Father Leo’s family. Father Leo was remembered as particularly serving those who were struggling with life. He had a strong commitment to social justice issues. Father Leo was a man with strong convictions and many recalled having long debates with him as they shared differing points of view. Mayor of the City of Greater Dandenong, Roz Blades, who attended the service, remembered Father Leo fondly as someone who was very committed to the wider community and who was very encouraging of her as she entered into local government. Father Leo was honoured as a man dedicated to his priesthood and for his love and service of God. May he Rest in Peace. Vicki Russell

Our community Masses in St Anthony’s is now growing every week and some of our children are interested in children’s liturgy.I am appealing to the Deanery parishes if we can find a children’s liturgy group that would be willing to help provide our children with liturgy in our fortnightly Masses on the first and third Sunday each month. We hope that some Good Samaritan will offer their time to help our community. We also have some young girls willing to assist and learn so they can take on the task in the future.
