Welcome Letter (continued from page 1)

• Another first-ever event in our program was a mixed-instrument studio class for high school students on Jan. 17, taught by Jean Seils and Nikki Lemire. These students will perform on the Advanced Student Suzuki Recital on Friday, January 31 at 6:00 in Antonello Hall. Look for more social / performance events for high school students in the future.

• It’s time to check in about practice, listening and recital challenges. Which challenges have you committed too? How is it going? It’s not too late to begin one of the challenges, which need to be completed by May 30, 2014.Make sure to check out other upcoming events outlined in this Gavotte. We are fortunate to be a part of a program with so many offerings which can enrich music study for you and your child!

On December 21, several Suzuki students performed at the Sunrise Senior Center in Golden Valley. Violists, Annie VanPilsum-Johnson and Nora Howley(pictured above), played in the Alzheimer’s ward.

Violinists Ava Szychalski, Mairead Howley, Miranda VanPilsum-Johnson and Angie Vaaler(pictured above), played on the main floor for the residents. Congrats to this quartet of violinists, whose accomplishments include winning the 2013 MacPhail Concerto & Aria Competition, performing on a European tour, and in various venues over the course of a full year to the date from December 15, 2012 to December 15, 2013! The performance above was their 10th performance, which earns them a spot in the 10 Performance Club.

10 Performance Club

Have you ever noticed the large glass panels on the 4th floor of MacPhail Minneapolis with students names and pieces on it? You can be on this too by completing the following guidelines with the help of your studio teacher:

-Confirm with your teacher that your piece is polished and ready for performance. -Perform the same piece 10 times. -Perform in front of a live audience. -Perform at a live event.

Your studio teacher will help you decide if the event counts as a performance. To be included on the 2014 board, start setting up performances now! Remember - professionals perform the same piece in several places all over the world.

Message for String Students who will be in note-reading class in Fall 2014:

Students cover Book 1 in their private lesson with their teacher in the spring/summer, and then cover Book 2 and Book 3 during group lesson/reading class on Saturdays the following year.

The best way to order the materials is to email Faith Farr at home: [email protected]. Be sure to tell Faith your instrument. She can leave books and an invoice at the MacPhail Minneapolis location, and families can mail her a check made out to Farr Publications. For Books 1, 2, 3 the total is $59.95 + $4.66 tax = $64.61.

Alternatively, students can order through her website www.farrpublications.com and pay for the books + tax + shipping on their credit card.

Families will need to order the supplementary materials (Perkins Logical Approach to Rhythmic Notation, Fink Quick Steps Bks 1 & 2, Etling Workbook for strings Bk 1) from their favorite music store. Faith has had good luck finding them in stock at www.sheetmusicplus.com.

THE SUZUKI DEPARTMENT IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCETHE 2013-2014 STUDENT CHALLENGES

CHOOSE TO COMPLETE 1, 2, OR 3 CHALLENGES

Program wide challenges offer an opportunity for students to realize the power of consistent practice, consistent listening and consistent concert attendance in furthering their musical education. These challenges also:

• Provide fine examples of tone, vibrato, and musical phrasing.• Enable students to have improved pitch, tone, and confidence in their playing.• Promote an increase in memory, not only in music, but in other learning environments.• Greatly shortens the time necessary for learning a new piece.• Provide a road map when learning repertoire. • Saturate the student environment to enable easy internalizing of the music. • Lessen the chance of developing performance nerves. • Promote constant repetition. Repetition is essential in learning to play an instrument. Similarly to language learning, children learn a new musical concept and add it to their vocabulary, gradually using it in new and more sophisticated ways.

100 DAYS LISTENING CHALLENGE:GUIDELINES:• Students need to listen to their Suzuki recording 100 days in a row. • Teachers and parents can determine how to keep track of the 100 days. A chart with 100 squares is provided on the back of this sheet

100 DAYS PRACTICING CHALLENGE:GUIDELINES:• Students need to practice a minimum of 100 days in a row. • Each studio teacher will determine what is acceptable for “make-up” practice days in the event of illness or traveling without access to an instrument. • Teachers and parents can determine how to keep track of the 100 days. A chart with 100 squares are provided on the back of this sheet.

10 RECITAL/CONCERT ATTENDANCE CHALLENGE:GUIDELINES:• Students need to attend 10 recitals/concerts that they do not perform in.• Students may view 2 concerts chosen from links recommended by their studio teacher:• At least 5 of the recitals/concerts must take place at MacPhail Center for Music• Students must congratulate one MacPhail performer at the MacPhail performances.• Students must collect a program as proof of attendance at each concert.

TIMELINE:Students have from October 14, 2013 until May 30, 2014 to complete any of the challenges above.

RECOGNITION:Student photos will be featured in a special edition of the Gavotte Newsletter in June 2014.Teachers may determine further recognition in individual studios.
