TOUCHMARK ON SADDLE DRIVE THE{FULL} LIFE July 2015 Healthy aging starts early Third-through sixth-grade students from various Helena schools came together to learn more about aging and how people only get better as they get older. The PEAK Gifted and Talented Program offers a comprehensive advanced curriculum designed to challenge gifted and talented students. Included in the visit was a presentation about staying healthy and active throughout your entire life. Later on, a handful of students toured the Touchmark memory care neighborhood and graciously offered their time to volunteer with residents. The group enjoyed creating Timeslips stories, working on art therapy projects, and participating in a rhythm and music circle. “These kids have so much energy! I love it when young people come here,” shares Elaine Verdon, Touchmark resident. PEAK student Alma Kline wished she could have stayed longer and played the piano for people. “I want to come back again!” was her parting comment.

Patriotism is not about politics or conflicts related to war. It is about connecting with others, and there are many health benefits. Holidays that celebrate our love for community and sense of patriotism, such as Independence Day (July 4 in the US and July 1 in Canada), improve our well-being. While patriotism isn’t a word you often hear associated with health,

research suggests that enjoying moments with people you love will boost your immune system.

Research also shows other advantages: • A recent study linked an increased feeling of happiness with waving the flag. This study also found the more people are satisfied with their country the happier they are with their lives, regardless of ethnicity. • A poll conducted in Portland, Oregon, in 2011 cited that people report being patriotic (and happy) if they volunteer, participate in civic activities, or work with neighbors. • The ACSM American Fitness Index® Data Report, a scientific snapshot of the state of health and fitness in metropolises, shows the cities that made the top patriotic list also made the top healthy cities list.

Civic pride, especially in one’s country, creates greater well-being by helping people feel like they’re part of something greater than themselves. This can be sustaining, both spiritually and psychologically.

I highly recommend taking advantage of the fun and relaxation offered by patriotic holidays. Unlike celebrations that require shopping, gift giving, and spending hours preparing a large meal, which often lead to stress, celebrating patriotism promotes pure happiness.

So, embrace your inner patriot. Fly your flag in your front yard. Enjoy your favorite people, and eat colorfully patriotic foods, such as blueberries, cherries, strawberries, Greek yogurt, cheese, tomatoes, blue chips, and red peppers. Be well!
