    9-1-1 call centers

calls are made to 9-1-1 in the U.S. each year

The operator picks up a 9-1-1 call and says:

    9-1-1, what is your emergency?

The Operator asks whenthe emergency occurred,

if there are any hazardsat the scene,

    and the identityof those involved.

The Operator pays close attention to the tone

and word choices of the caller and to background

noise. These help assess the nature of

    the emergency

The Operator keeps the caller on the line while

    alerting the police, medical assistance

    or fire department.

If necessary, The Operator will offer instructions for

handling the emergency until help arrives.

Operators are trained in emergency baby delivery,

wound care, avoiding intruders and much more.

For example, in the movieThe Call, a 9-1-1 operatorinstructed a kidnapped girllocked in a trunk to kick outthe taillight and wave herarm to draw the attention of

    passing vehicles.
