Welcome to the Humphreys School of Musical Theatre’s production of RENT. We are so proud of our cast and production staff for coming together and creating a work of theatre with such power and life. This year, we are celebrating 12 years of phenomenal performances with a piece that reaches beyond boundaries.
RENT is a musical that has touched many lives in the 22 years since its conception. The deeply human stories resonate with individuals from all backgrounds and all age groups. It is about love, but not a true romance. It is about rebellion, but is not purely a call to action. In truth, this musical is effective because it forces us to ask questions: questions about our society, about our actions, about ourselves.
The young people involved with this production have embraced the intricacies of RENT with intense fervor. Part of our mission at TUTS is to connect theatre skills and techniques to the lessons that theatre can teach. A challenge for these young actors was to use dramaturgy, inference, collaboration, and personal storytelling to get to know characters that are seemingly quite different from themselves. In this process, through the songs and lyrics of Jonathan Larson, they have had the opportunity to discover more about their own artistry, about social awareness, and about humanity.
Theatre provokes thought, challenges the status quo, and creates community. Just as the characters of RENT band together to fight and survive, our TUTS team collaborated to create an expression of remembrance and of hope. Through the power of theatre, they are sharing with you, our audience, that there is no day but today.
So sit back and let the music wash over you. Let the strength and purpose in the voices of our cast take you to a place of understanding. Enjoy their talent, but hear the stories that lay underneath. Measure this moment with hope, love, and community as we share together Jonathan Larson’s RENT.

RENT is made possible through the generosity of the Cullen Trust for the Performing Arts, the Immanuel and Helen B. Olshan Foundation, and TUTS’ HSMT Association. TUTS greatly
appreciates these sponsors for their continued support of TUTS
productions and arts education programs. We are especially
grateful for their support of our Teen Conservatory, celebrating
its 12th anniversary of training many of Houston’s most talented
teenagers. Together these sponsors are making an incredible
difference in the lives of future artists, giving them invaluable
experience in all aspects of musical theatre and an advantage
that will serve them well in the highly competitive field of
musical theatre or any venture they pursue. Thank you for your
commitment to the arts in Houston.
Thank you to our generous donors who gave to HSMT Association’s RENT Campaign.
Your gifts make it possible for these talented young students to have the unique experience of working with TUTS’ Artistic
team on a fully staged musical theatre production.
