Our name derives from the two distinct communities of any university town, the local population and the university dwelling community and the ever improving relationship between them. Our Town and Gown is a space for both to meet, drink, eat, experience and revel.

The Theatre is a revival of the building’s history as an Arts Cinema from 1933 trading as the Cosmopolitan Cinema. Our Black Box Theatre located on the top floor of the venue is a wonderfully intimate fringe theatre with an abundance of shows and experiences from the moment we open the doors.

Please take your seats, the performance is about to begin!

Venue History

In 1926, the interior of the 1866-built Central Hall and Conservative Club was gutted by fire. Rebuilt in 1927, the hall was used as a part-time 250 seat cinema, the Cosmopolitan Cinema, from 16th October 1933. It became full-time in 1940.

It had a square-shaped one-floor auditorium with mirror projection from the ceiling. The floor was reconstructed and raked, and it became the Arts Cinema from 16th October 1947. The accent was on ‘quality’ films, and the Cambridge Film Festival became established there. The auditorium was ‘turned round’ in 1961 and seating increased to 320. A pair of Philips FP20 projectors with pulsed lamps were installed above the seating, again using mirrors. A Philips 16mm projector was installed in 1976 and the pulsed lamps were replaced by Orcon Xenon lamp houses. These were replaced in the 1980s with more powerful equipment and Dolby stereo was added with a CP50 processor (donated by none other than Ray Dolby, who had been a student at Emmanuel College) feeding Westrex power amps and JBL speakers. Strong Super Lumex Xenon lamp houses were added later. In the 1990s, Ray Dolby donated a CP45 processor which was in use when the cinema closed on 26th June 1999 with “Cinema Paradiso”. By the mid-2000s the building had become “B” Bar & Restaurant. Source Cinema Treasures.

McMullen's Brewery has owned the site since 1999 and it has since operated as B BAR and most recently Baroosh. Bringing the venue up to the present we are excited to be launching our new Pub & Theatre venue. Our 100 seater theatre will be a flexible studio playing in all orientations featuring the best of fringe theatre programming with regular live entertainment throughout the venue and a food and drink menu to die for.

When You Fall Down16th - 18th SeptemberTickets £14

The award-winning musical about the silent era’s greatest star comes to the Town and Gown Theatre. Through slapstick, songs and soft shoe shuffle, follow the triumphs and trials of film star Buster Keaton making

his iconic movies. Written and performed “in true Buster Keaton fashion” (Mind The Blog) by James Dangerfield, don’t miss the chance to see this

“amusing and heartbreaking” (Voice Mag) new musical.

As the world whirls around, with his marriage failing, his best friend on trial, his career in danger and turning to the bottle, Buster must hit his mark

as he films his most dangerous ever stunt. With music, mime, magic and re-creations of Buster’s routines, this show

is a tribute to a man who always got back on his feet, no matter how many

times he fell down.

Page 15: Theatre & Events

SeptemberThe Jazz Section21st - 22nd SeptemberTickets £12

In 1980s Prague, nothing is more dangerous than jazz — but Dansky just can’t stop listening to it. Tired of being controlled by the hardline Communist government and fascinated by a culture he’s never known, Dansky finds himself drawn into the Jazz Section — a well-known but elusive group of musicians, who have banded together against threats of censorship and imprisonment.

The Jazz Section tells the story of five musicians, based on real individuals in the Czech Republic, featuring live music performed by the actors themselves and drawing inspiration from the world of gig-theatre. A dynamic new musical which focuses on the resilience of musicianship and the ability for real art to make a stronger statement than any political party.
